The Federal Government has ended Multichoice’s exclusive rights in broadcasting sporting events in the country following a statement issued by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.

minister of information and culture

Special Assistant to the President (Media), Office of the Minister of Information and Culture, Segun Adeyemi made the statement available to newsmen.

Consequently it has directed the National Broadcasting Commission to immediately implement measures aimed at sanitising and re-positioning the industry.

“This regulation prevents the misuse of monopoly or market power or anti-competitive and unfair practices by a foreign or local broadcaster to suppress other local broadcasters in the television and radio markets.

“This is so, having removed exclusivity from all content in Nigeria and mandated the sharing of all content upon the payment of commercially viable fees,” he said.

Mohammed said the new regulation is contained in the report of the committee which he set up to work out the modalities for implementing the recommendations approved by President Muhammadu Buhari to re-position the broadcast industry.

The minister inaugurated the NBC Reform Implementation Committee on Oct. 10, 2019 and the committee chaired by Prof. Armstrong Idachaba submitted its report on Nov. 19 the same year.

The minister stressed that the break-in monopoly will boost reach and also maximise utilization by all broadcasters of premium content, in order to grow their platforms and investment in other content.

Wait ooo how true?

But wait EPL taken away from supersport hmmmm inasmuch as l support patronizing local made goods it is not a yadstick to give a child an adult equipment oooo. I don't play with the premier league is equal to food to me, so plz federal govt should find a very good alternative to air these matches without any technical hitch cos I can't really vouch for the Nigerian television Authority (NTA).

Now that Liverpool are close to winning thier first premier since 1990, and the champions tie between Real Madrid and Man city closeby ...e nu go funny.ooo

DSTV takes their sole privilege on broadcasting EPL matches from the premiership regulators.Meanwhile, it will a good thing if Nigeria can indiginize and break the monopoly of the SA owned DSTV but hope the privilege will not go to the archaic NTA?

They don't have such power. DStv purchased the broadcasting right from whomever has the right in the UK with millions of pounds. In fact, sometimes, they also purchase that exclusive right to cover and broadcast a Super Eagles game being played in Nigeria.

For any nation to progress it must avoid every form or monopoly and allow for a free and fair market entry. I hope this is not on paper alone or a plan to enrich a few.

Monopoly is one of the negative factors affecting businesses in Africa, especially Nigeria. Competition put companies on toes to be innovative in service rendering.

If the government can have this implemented, kudos to them. DSTV has dealt with us for too long and it's time we look elsewhere for better service delivery. I am not referring to NTA.

In this economic situation, coughing out almost 20k to enjoy premium package that will not air important matches is nonsense upon injury.

That's for the English premiership rights board to decide not Nigeria ..Nigeria can grow her own league then decide how she wants to allot the rights .. shouldn't the govt be telling us their plans for electricity instead of this ? DSTV pays over 100 million pounds to get the broadcast rights for Nigeria for just 2 seasons so nothing stops Lai Mohammed from paying 150 million pounds and getting the rights so he can broadcast free lets see

What does EPL broadcasting rights have to do with Nigeria government? Supersports pays EPL for the sole broadcasting right in West, east and South Africa. It has nothing to do with Nigeria government.

If there was no supersport, NTA will still not be able to show all 380 EPL matches

It is exclusivity that is stopped. Now, other stations can also broadcast matches.

DSTV did nothing to U sir , DSTV subscription are some of the cheapest on Earth , the fact you are finding hard to subscribe to it here shows you wouldnt be able to afford subscription TV in any other continent in Earth and it means you are trying to live above your means , to avoid this the same multichoice set up GOTV so you can have Subscription TV that fits your pocket but you say no you want DSTV by all means grin grin.... If you can't afford DSTV no that viewship is moving to Netflix then how can you afford Netflix ....The situation has nothing to do with DSTV but your govt that can't create a wealth for the society

This is a wonderful development. It’s highly time DSTv monopoly must end in this country. Ghana will not allow this to happen

This has nothing to do with NTA per say rather a particular cable tv having an exclusive right to air EPL.

Lol. Relax bro. Read my comment slowly and carefully watch the points raised. Paying for premium package without enjoying full benefits is day time fraud.

FYI, who told you DSTV is the cheapest in the world. Seems you have been scammed by DSTV to believe such lies. Anyway, Android TV lo laye bayi. Uninterrupted service and access to all channels is what am enjoying with unlimited fibre link internet service.

Though, I don't see any Nigeria stations having the money to get EPL rights.

I don't think that's the problem here. There was a time CTL and Super Sports were showing EPL matches. If another cable TV can pay more than what supersports is paying the EPL, I believe they would have been showing the matches too. There was a time supersports couldn't show the league cup and I think star times did. There was a season abi 3 seasons when sky sports had exclusive right to show the EPL and the next time BT sports had the opportunity, they bought some of the rights and now BT sports and Sky sports share the rights to air EPL

It would make sense to me if supersport was using the exclusivity rule formally in place to stop local stations from buying rights from them rather than EPL (that's if that is possible sef) but now they can't do that anymore because of the change

I understand what the Nigeria government did but my point is it has nothing to do with supersports showing EPL matches or la liga matches. Unless I am not understanding what Lai Mohammed meant, someone can explain to me.

They did not take it away.

They asked dstv to sell the rights.

So instead of only dstv showing epl, we would have others showing it too.

So you can choose the network you want.

Now this makes more sense. I guess DSTV was using the exclusivity rule to hoard the rights before but now they are compelled to sell but still I think DSTV will still decide the price other stations will pay depending on what they pay to the EPL. It's the same way other stations in Europe buy from Sky Sports and BT Sports.

DSTV can still remain on top if they want to, I don't think any local station can afford to pay EPL directly at the moment.

That's not in doubt.
