Days ago, I put up a clue online, asking if it's possible to be a good Marlian. Coincidentally, the entire responses showed that dirty bottle cannot produce good wine; a bad seed cannot bring out good fruits.

The Marlian is a movement championed by a Nigerian hip hop artist Azeez Fashola known as Naira Marley with a mission to deviate from the social standard, creating new trends and ready to defile the norms.

But what are we going to do? The menace of Marlians is sweeping away our morals and ethics. Our children and youths are now lost in the euphoria of being Marlian and never responding to the call of societal values again.

If you have been oblivious to the new trend or what Marlians are, these are some of the characteristics.

1. Marlian don't use belt: this really got me, as they say, Marlians use 1000 trousers no belt. You are not loyal if you have a job interview and you use belt.

2. Weed Addicted: you must be a heavy smoker; the leader once called himself igbolabi (Born to Smoke)

3. MAFO: this slang means never afraid of anything.

4. No manners: Marlians are to deform the rules and regulations, you're to be rude. You're to climb the fence even though the door is opened else you're not a good Marlian.
All these may sound strange but it’s what we see every day in our society which someone now made popular through a movement, using music as a tool and media as the channel to influence the youth. In fact, the Marlian movement has been in the society for long.

Who is at fault? The purveyor of Marlian movement? The followers? The media as the channel or the society?

Years ago, I was listening to a debate on a TV station where two people were debating on Societal Decadence, The Fault of Parents or the Media? After various arguments in support and against the topic, one of the speakers finally said “the society cannot teach you anything good, it's the duty of the family to bring up a child in the right way". This submission really struck me and I continued to ponder on it.

The society is polluted and there is no iota of good things out there to tap if you're not really fortified with morals and serious home training. The media is a conveyor belt, pushing what is already in the society that hibernates or shrouded. It's just a channel to elaborate the hidden and covert societal decadence to the world. Therefore, the media has little or no fault in the lost of societal values because it doesn’t create but only activates.

Pause! Let’s think of this. Is society an isolated formation? No. Society exists only as a mental concept; in the real world, there are only individuals. The combinations of families become a society, therefore, we can say that moral decadence is a product of poor family upbringing which spreads like a virus.

Nobody fell from above, we all came from one family but the family has relegated its duty to the larger society and because it’s easy to pollute than to purify, the bad suppresses the good.

Family has the larger blame for the societal ills.

As for me, I have burnt my Marlian uniform, now wearing “Churchian” regalia

You are looking at it based on politics.

Leaders of tomorrow in many field and professions.

You can start reasoning from there

Op the headline should be "Are we all marlians? Not we are all marlians". In as much as all what you listed has been existing before now, some of us have never been a marlian be it now or in our former world.
