Ajao Estate residents protest exclusion from Okada ban.

Residents of Ajao Estate in Lagos say that they want their area to be included in the list of places that motorcycle taxis, popularly known as Okada, are banned. The chairman of the residents association stated this when he led a delegation to the office of the Lagos State Governor in Alausa today.

Here is a video of the interaction between members of the residents association and journalists outside the governor’s office in Alausa and before that is a transcription of what was said in the video.

The residents association chairman says something that is inaudible.

Journalist: And these godfathers will not go away, so do you think it will not work?

(The chairman doesn’t answer, so the journalist asks another question.)

Journalist: What can the government do to help you?

Residents association chairman: What can the government do to help us is, now that they’ve banned them all over the place, why are we excluded? Why are we not included? They’ve been banned before years ago, when they gave policemen and they burnt their vehicles, why now that they purposely, I don’t know whether by mistake or omission, it was excluded.

Journalist: Do you have documentary evidence that it was excluded?

Residents association chairman: Look at our petition there. It’s there.

Journalist: Did they pay any levy to the CDA sir?

Another member of the residents association: Nobody wants any levy from them. Life is more important than levy.

Residents association chairman: Does the levy help the council?

Another member of the residents association: They are not even living in Ajao. They are not living in the estate. They come from Ejigbo, the road that was recently built by the governor, to enter Ajao Estate. It is from there that they enter, they rob, they escape from there.

Residents association chairman: And to make things worse, just few days ago when this order banning them was announced, they have been rushing to Ajao Estate again, looking for houses, looking for places to live with their okadas! So the place is already being crowded, because when they move from Apapa now, or they move from expressway (Mile 2),

angry

Instead of blaming Okadas for robberies, why don't you blame the Police for not doing their job?

Tomorrow when they start robbing with bicycles, the government will ban it

When they rob with corollas, the government will ban it

The government keeps exonerating itself from its responsibilities. In the end, the people go dey suffer am

Did I read this news well? Isn't it a good thing that they still have the privilege of still using this service seeing that okada and Keke is a necessity in such areas?

Lol. Their decision

Sanwoolu will have to consider reconsidering the decision...

Okada men have children and mouth to feed. Debts to pay.

It's not going to be easy.

My fear is that almost all transporters drive recklessly, so even if they start using mini buses they will still scratch peoples car. Okada men graduated to keke riders and now about to graduate to taxi drivers. Same spirit.

That's Mean na,Ajao Estate is very big, No taxi's or buses. The Keke's are a big rescue and should be allowed to operate there. Okada's can go for more serenity.

Okada, keke are big nuisance on Lagos roads.

Those keke riders are worse and move like demons. The other day, one was stopped at rail crossing when a train was approaching. The rider briskly turned the head of his tricycle to jump into his death and many others on board.

I learnt that virtually all of them take alcoholic drink before setting out on their rough ride.

People should watch out as they graduate to another level of what they call 'korope'- those Suzuki mini buses are high breed of keke and danfo.

Their only advantage is fast movement as against deludes of disadvantages.

It is also noteworthy that most of the bike riders are hausas from Northern neighboring countries.

Apart from safety issue, they constitute so huge security burden to all well meaning and right-thinking residents of the state.

This is very correct.

Commercial bus drivers are senseless. It's as if a different spirit comes into them as soon as they get behind the wheels to start misbehaving
