Most times when we walk into big malls, boutiques and supermarkets we never question their prices. We pay exactly what we see on the price tags and even hand out tips to the staff.

But the moment we are out of these shops and want to buy banana and peanut our bargaining power rises to the roof.

A poor woman with hungry children at home tells you banana is N100. She even takes her time to explain how difficult it was for her to buy it from the market. But we insist that if it's not N50, we are not buying.

Some of us even step back into our cars and make to drive away. But because 'half bread is better than none', the woman is forced to run after you and sell at no gain.

In her heart she cries, she's worried about how she'll survive with her children. She silently reassures herself that 'It's well since she is not returning home with the banana. Her motivation is God will definitely provide some other day.

Meanwhile you drive off and happily chop the luscious banana.

Take some seconds to think about this.
Am always moved to tears when I see people who genuinely and helplessly hawk petty goods to feed and survive for that day, especially women and children.

Please don't bargain too hard with small vendors. They do business not to buy designer bags, trendy phones, watches, shoes or designer clothes, but to FEED the family and CARE for the children in school.

This touched me when I realised it ... so lets CHANGE our ways. Its another way of spending on humanity in the will of God.
"He who gives to the poor lends to his Maker".

Nothing hurts more.

I once priced a wine opener in Lagos traffic. By quality alone it would be nothing less than £20 but the guy wanted less ₦1000 and I'd got him down to ₦600 and was feeling guilty when someone in my car, trying to save me money, offered ₦200! In anger, I crashed into the bus in front and gave the guy ₦1000.

I guess I've been there, selling stuff in traffic, and so can empathise. You'd know what it feels like when a bus stops on your foot as some passenger in it is mispricing what you're trying to sell with no intention of buying unless you were giving it them free!

And just for this thread, I'm going to buy a bottle of wine to celebrate 10 years of owning that high quality wine opener with delight that I paid him his full asking price!

Great piece op, i thank the heavens we Nigerians are beginning to wake up and knowing that little things like bargaining too hard with small vendors is not smartness but a desperate ignorant way to display fake smartness and wickedness.

You are looking at it from one angle. Some people inflate their good prices hoping you will crash it.

When you walk into a mall, most items have already been discounted and like you have rightly pointed you have the prices compared to someone that sold a 7up with #50 on the bottle for #70. Sometimes you can’t explain how they arrive at their prices hence you will need to price it. When you go to the market to buy meats for example the sellers knows he would let it go for 1000 but will ask for 3500. You just need to price it.

Let’s not be mistaken if you bought something for #1000 and it’s worth £20 abroad it means you just bought a Chinese product and not the original. I bought a balenciaga for 23k. I looked the shoe up and balenciaga listed the same shoe for $590 tell me did I buy original?

The £20 one too is made in China. It says so on the package, which is identical to the ₦1000 one.

They are of two different qualities but if you indeed believe they are the same product I won’t argue with you. Every product has its counterfeit and I mean every product. Imagine BeatByDre on apple site is $317 including tax but people sell it for 10k here. Are you saying they too are original beats? I can go on. There’s no way a product will be cheaper here than where it’s been produced. Put shipping, clearance, tax and your own profits into consideration. That thing you bought for 1000 will probably come at the rate of 200 from China that’s why the seller is under the hot sun chasing moving vehicles and that’s why others are joining the business. Even sachet water sellers make profit in traffic.

You are right, because that's all we Nigerians have been practicing, and these negativities are leading us no where, but distruction, hatred, set-back etc. Its time to start changing the game for good.
