Bro, I feel for you and I pray God bring you relief. I wish I have something to spare, honest....but I am lean.

My Uncle said Victor Olaiya's family owned the demolished Olaiya building at Tinubu. I didnt know that. I used to go in that building as a child with my cousins living at Kakawa. Are all the Olaiya families connected?

He gave me list of some clubs -
Cabana or Cubana. Was this not the same club on Awolowo Rd owned by Joke Silva?
Stadium Hotel
Bobby Benson Hotel
Fela Shrine
Paradiso
Face2
Floating Buka

...na wah for Lagos o! I know Shrine, I know Stadium Hotel, I know Cabana.

A little bird whispered to me that you were the one that visited all those joints, not your uncle wink

Bobby Benson's hotel was also known as Caban Bamboo (I'm sure you know that). Caban Bamboo was the name of the nightclub that he established (If I remember correctly, there's a nightclub in Monaco with a similar name) and later, when he built the hotel, people also called the hotel Caban Bamboo.

Wole Soyinka's theatre group practiced there during the daytime and then Bobby Benson would chase them away in the evenings.

I remember Caban Bambo very well because it was the venue for his TV show, The Bobby Benson Show, which was shown on Saturday afternoons.

Unfortunately his children fought over ownership of the giant hotel (which was on Ikorodu Road) after his death. The hotel was abandoned and left to decay. Area boys, armed robbers and drug dealers made the structure their home. Governor Babatunde Fashola decided that it had become a security risk and therefore his government demolished the structure.

This seems to be a good week, because I found the intro to the Bala Miller Show yesterday and now I've found a little clip of the Bobby Benson Show (after searching for it for many years).

The Bobby Benson Show featured music, magic tricks, guest stars, etc.

Here is Bobby Benson singing at Caban Bamboo (Hotel Bobby) in 1980.

Bro, im jealous the way you talk about these events and especially the characters. Im wishing I was around to jump all these places you guys describe. I know Lagos very well...but my knowledge came after many of these artistes were tired and retired....or dead! My grandfather for instance spoke lovingly of Late Saka Olayigbade, an Apala singer, and he said all the great music and entertainment of Lagos, and Nigeria for that matter, happened like a heavy rain shower that came down...then when it stopped the ground dried and many people missed the good down pour.

Im led to believe you were a tv personality or someone very connected in entertainment back in the days, a music artist, because I am yet to see anyone beat your knowledge on archived music and its history.

Ok now, i thought Cabana was on Awolowo Rd. Whats name of club owned by Joke Silva and her husband? Ive seen Stadium Hotel. I saw Bebby Benson Hotel. Ive been to Shrine. Ive seen pictures taken in face2. Never seen paradiso but heard. I heard there used to be a club in Apapa sef.

grin grin

Is Bobby Benson and TOS Benson same family?

Is Victor Olaiya and Moses Olaiya (Babasala) same family?

OOOOOHHHHHH! I KNOW THE CLUB THAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT!

I believe you are referring to Jazz 38.

Jazz 38 was owned by Tunde and Fran Kuboye and it was on 38 Awolowo Road, Ikoyi.

Fran Kuboye was Fela Anikulapo-Kuti's niece (she was Dolapo's daughter). She was also a musician and TV star in her own right. She was the host of the entertainment section of The Sunday Show on NTA Channel 10 in the late 1980s and she and her husband were the judges on a talent competition on the NTA Network in the early 1990s.

Various guests came to perform at Jazz 38 and the house band was known as "Tunde & Fran and the Extended Family Band".

I'll never forget the night that Fela came to play there c1986. It was the talk of the town for weeks before that night. I don't know if they brought in extra speakers, but I could hear the basslines of "Lady" and "Water No Get Enemy" around 11 o'clock in the night. You could hear it across South-West Ikoyi.

Dede Mabiaku said that that was the night that he met Fela. He convinced someone at Jazz 38 to give him a few minutes on stage and he played some of Fela's songs on his saxophone and Fela came from backstage to see who was playing.

Sadly Fran passed away in the late 1990s or early 2000s (it was a sad time because many members of the Ransome-Kuti/Anikulapo-Kuti family died during this period).

Here's a documentary about Fran. It begins with one of Tunde and Fran's songs.

Wow! Unbelievable!

I dont believe we have a Music Hall of Fame in Nigeria. If we do I dont know it. But I know someone who can create and run a Nigerian Music Hall of Fame......or a Yoruba Music Hall of Fame.

Naptu, I bow for you o! grin

But why do we tear down monuments that could be preserved for tourism? Like Benson Hotel was torn down. Thats history. Olaiya house at Tinubu was torn down. Why?

I had a picture of Fela and his siblings when they were little. It was him, Beko and a girl. Is that who Dolapo is? Thieves have taken over, we worship jagudas now as legends. The real legends of society are forgotten. I doubt if three out of ten people in Nigeria can list Mrs Ransome Kuti's sacrifice and contribution to social progress....not to mention her legacy through her children.

Water No Get Enemy. My best Fela hit. If i dey that club that night I go get up spray am cash. grin grin

Naptu, give us a Music Hall of Fame abeg. Even if its hosted on web.....but Id rather it is a monument and funded by Yoruba Arts and Cultural Endowment.

Watch the second half of the documentary, they interviewed Professor Olikoye Ransome-Kuti, Dolapo Ransome-Kuti (Fran's mother), Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and Beko Ransome-Kuti and got them to talk about Fran's music. Watch from the 11:07 minute mark.

MetaPhysical, this is a really great week.

In 2016 I did a thread about Nigerian songs and their cover versions. I was sad that I only had the original version of Baby Jowo (that version is no longer available) and that I didn't have Lieutenant Shotgun and Art Alade's versions of the song.

Art Alade was the host of the Bar Beach Show in the 1970s and then he had his own show (which was named after him) in the 1980s. The Art Alade Show was shown at 9 or 10am on Sunday mornings in the early 1980s. I usually watched it while I was eating my breakfast.

Art Alade did a cover of Baby Jowo and he often sang it on his show. I've been looking for it for a long time.

Meanwhile, something funny happened on Nairaland a few years ago. I posted about something that Art Alade did in the 1980s and somebody attacked me. They thought that I was referring to Darey Art Alade (Art Alade's son) and they couldn't believe what I wrote because Darey must have been a baby at that time, that's if he had been born.

Anyway, here's a video of Art Alade performing Baby Jowo on the Bala Miller Show.

(the picture quality is not as good as it used to be, you know what happens to tape over time, but it's ok)

Metaphysical: Watch this video instead. The picture quality is much better and this video contains the full interview and performance.

Watching this reminds me why I loved the Art Alade Show so much. Art Alade was a funny man. He could easily make you laugh.

Bala Miller said that Art Alade attended CMS Grammar School and Art Alade interrupted him and said, "Where you attended. You were my senior at school". Bala Miller agreed and said that Art Alade was playing the piano for the school at the age of 10. Bala Miller said that he left school 5 years before Art and he asked Art what he had been doing since then (basically asked him about his musical journey).

Art Alade said that he went to England. He said that he didn't write the school cert exam because he was a dullard and his father thought that he might be saved if he sent him to England.
