‘1500’ Lagos-bound passengers stranded in Ghana — four days after flight diversion

At least 1,500 passengers are stranded in Ghana four days after British Airways, Rwandair, Emirates and Qatar airlines diverted their flights from Murtala Muhammad International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos to Kotoka International Airport, in Accra.

The airlines said they could not airlift the passengers to their intended destination because of unfavorable weather condition.
According to PRNigeria , British Airways (BA) already cancelled its flight to Lagos due to operational constraints.

In an email sent to passengers, the airline notified them of its plans to airlift those interested back to the United Kingdom.

“BA075-We would like to sincerely apologise for the disruption to your journey to Lagos. Due to adverse weather at the airport, we were unable to safely land into Lagos Airport… If you wish to travel from Accra – London Heathrow, there are limited availability of seats to book on,” the email read.

“Please speak with our colleagues at the airport to adjust your ticket, subject to availability. BA078 Accra – London Heathrow is scheduled to depart at 23:00 local time. Please submit your receipts for claims hotels, transport, refreshment, the cost for calls and internet access & transport to www.ba.com/helpme.

“Our Customer Relations team will review each case on an individual basis. We understand this is not what you expect when you travel with us and apologise for the significant inconvenience we have caused to your journey.”

Olayiwola Zaid, one of the BA passengers, lamented over the delay in airlifting passengers to Nigeria.

Zaid, a cybersecurity analyst, who claimed to have made alternative arrangement to fly to Nigeria via a domestic flight from Ghana, faulted the federal government for inappropriate actions over the incident.

“This frustrating, agonizing, but avoidable development will have prompted the Minister of Aviation and airport authorities to take appropriate actions in defence of their citizens. It is bewildering that an international airport like MMIA cannot boast of an efficient Instrument Landing System (ILS) and other fundamental air navigation equipment for an international flight,” he said.

Reacting to the development, Henrietta Yakubu, FAAN spokesperson, said the flights were not diverted to Ghana over lack of basic navigation and landing equipment at MMIA, but due to poor weather condition in Lagos after the aircraft had arrived the country.

Some passengers of a British Airways flight from London to Lagos had earlier accused the airline of abandoning them in Abuja over harmattan in Lagos.

On Thursday, Hadi Sirika, minister of aviation, said the federal government is making efforts to improve visibility at Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

He said diverting flights to Ghana was purely the decision of the airlines as such could have been diverted to Abuja.

One of my clients who was supposed to bring time sensitive documents to the office was affected. Last last mama paid for a flight back to Lagos from her own pocket because she didn't have time for all the bureaucratic fuckery.

She arrived safely last night to the glory of God.

Dear Baba Lifeless,

You left 1500 Lagos-bound passengers stranded just because you want to look for trouble at the burial ceremony of Nnamdi Kanu's parents?

When will you change? Ehn! When? Is it until the rotten vulture meat barbecue business man call you a moronic drunkard before you'll come to your senses?

Shame!

How do u improve visibility? The best thing to do is to fix the ILS in the airport and no claiming you will make weather better

So as a minister of aviation you don't know why Airlines choose to reroute to Ghana other than Abuja ..okay then let me list the reasons out for you .

1 .Kotoka Airport Ghana is closer to Lagos than Abuja and so will save the airline more fuel

2. The ILS service in Abuja airport is epileptic and obsolete CAT 1 while Kotoka has CAT 3b where an aircraft can land with even just 50 ft of visibility

3 .the cost of aviation fuel is cheaper and more accessible than Nigeria

4 Kotoka airport Ghana has better runway service than any airport in Nigeria

So Mr minister you can see why any reasonable crew will opt to reroute to Ghana than head to Abuja

Unfavorable weather conditions is not something you play with. If the pilot says it's a no go area, you listen to him because he's been trained to know better than you. All these hullabaloo, trying to use "connections" to go against the assessment of trained aviation officials is the reason Kobe Bryant and so many others are now 6feet under today.

This is an act of incompetence from the BA
They should be sued for this
Since the visibility of Lagos is not encouraging, what happened to Abuja airport, what happened to calabar, what happened to portharcourt, what happened to bayelsa?
If this is in their country they would have fined Nigeria 20billion just as they did with P&ID
British is the Origin of scam

I don't understand why everyone is blaming buhari and the minister if aviation
You call clearly see it written up there that due to bad weather conditions planes had to be rerouted to Accra

I just don't understand why everybody in this country is very narrow minded and unable to attribute the right problems to the right cause

Do you know how difficult it is to land a plane with very poor visibility

What control does the airport or air traffic have over the weather

Una just dey weak person every time I read the comments.... everybody wants to claim knowledgeable on every fucking topic

Lol! stranded in Doha, got transit visa to stay in Hotel provided by Qatar airways with 50$ voucher for food and drinks until they know what next to do.

Abuja is fully booked so no going there, and yes Accra would be the best place since it's closer to Lagos and the report should do due diligence because Lagos is the only place Qatar Airways fly to in West Africa.

Took my time navigating around the city, small beautiful Doha! cool
