Muhammed instructed muslims to keep beards. If you want to understand why muslims do anything just read Koran, Hadith or Sunnah of Muhammad. Apostate Prophet made an intersting video on it.

"Do the opposite of what the pagans do. Keep the beards and cut the mustaches short."

Sahih Bukhari 7:72:780

"Trim the mustache and grow the beard, and thus act against the fire-worshipers."

Sahih Muslim 2:501

"Ten are the acts according to fitra:
Clipping the mustache, letting the beard grow, cutting the nails, plucking the armpit hair, shaving the pubes etc."
