Cut-off marks for Unity Schools:

Anambra 139

Kebbi 9 (male) 20 (female)
Sokoto 9 (male) 13 (female)
Taraba 3 (male) 11 (female)
Yobe 2 (male) 27 (female)

Re: Unity Schools: Cut-off Mark For Anambra Is 139 While Yobe Is 2, Zamfara 4, why? by SanusiGworo(op):
This is grossly unfair

For many parents and stakeholders in the education sector, the public notice by the National Examination Council (NECO) may well be the start of another unending controversy over who eventually makes it onto the final admission list, and from what region of the country.
Not that the whining is an unnecessary fuss by some losers who failed in their bid to secure a slot in the unity arrangements exactly. The griping has always been that the admission policy into those federal colleges is skewed in favour of the North even though the preliminary intent of the unity colleges is to foster unity among Nigeria’s over 300 ethnic nationalities.

To keep the hope of getting on the admission list alive, the cut-off mark system requires candidates from states in the South-East and South-West to score significantly higher marks than their counterparts from the North, or those states dubbed educationally disadvantaged.

Yobe;
Male 2
Female 27.

Obviously, North don’t want their females to be educated.

The full list of cut-off marks for the 36 states and FCT in the 2018 academic session will perplex any optimist in the unity arrangement actually. Abia 130; Adamawa 62; Akwa-Ibom 123; Anambra 139; Bauchi 35; Bayelsa 72; Benue 111; Borno 45; Cross River 97; Delta 131; Ebonyi 112; Edo 127; Ekiti 119; Enugu 134; Gombe 58; Imo 138; Jigawa 44; Kaduna 91; Kano 67; Katsina 60; Kebbi 9 (male) 20 (female); Kogi 119; Kwara 123; Lagos 133; Nasarawa 58; Niger 93; Ogun 131; Ondo 126; Osun 127; Oyo 127; Plateau 97; Rivers 118; Sokoto 9 (male) 13 (female); Taraba 3 (male) 11 (female); Yobe 2 (male) 27 (female); Zamfara 4 (male) 2 (female) and FCT Abuja 90.

All these are emotional arguments and lacking logic

The purpose of the creation of Unity schools is to have equal representation from all states in Nigeria. Full stop

The admission is not solely based on the highest marks its to have every part of the country represented in the class to foster Unity. That is the purpose for creating Unity Scholls
So cutoffs are set to ensure that happens

What is the point of a Unity school if all the students are from Anambra and Ogun state, what is the Unity in that

Well, nothing wrong with this, everyone has to be equally represented.Lets not forget that here in the South(the South East especially) cheating is involved in almost all centers such examinations are conducted.

Superficially attractive logic
However when people are getting in with Mark's of 4 and 7 in contrast to 134 that is quite extreme

Should such individuals attend secondary schools?
Will they profit?

In my opinion there should be a minimum cut off

Why should merit be scarifies in place of national cohesion?

There are many schools that were established for merits, If you seek merit admission go there. The unity schools were specifically established for National Unity

Despite the cut off of 4 and 7 how many people from those states still attend the schools. The cut off of 4 and 7 are what they deemed low enough to catch people from those areas

If there is a minimum cutoff and no one from these states still dont meet it, How do you meet the main goals for establishing those schools

Dragging you down how? How many Unity schools are in Nigeria? Maximum 100unity schools? So its these 100 Unity schools out of over 1million secondary schools in Nigeria that is dragging you down?

Bross! You can't superficially wish this away. What you wrote above doesn't really make any sense because state of origins are normally used, this render your argument useless, since a kid whose parents are from any of those southern state will still have to pass the cut of mark even if such a kid was born and raised in Zamfara.

What we should have is to reserve some slots, let say 10% percent for education less developed states and then allow everyone else to fight for the remaining 90% through merit only.

Ok....you support this and for the reason you just gave- balanced representation and unity.

Do you support the dominance of the security apparatus of this country by persons from a single region to the exclusion of others by this Buhari regime?

Schools funded by Federal govt is assumed that the income comes from all states, So why shouldn't indigenes from all states have a chance at it not only those with superior academic backgrounds

FGN is not in the business of secondary education, Those Unity schools were for a specific purpose. You don't have to attend a Federal secondary school, there are over a million non-federal secondary school. There are state schools, private schools etc

You know in America If an Asian(Chinese and Indian) scores the same marks as a Hispanic in the SAT. The Hispanic student has a better chance of admission because of Affirmative action a law that seeks to have equal representation of educationally disadvantaged groups
