Android Television Boxes or android tv boxes are entertainment systems which share semblance with portable satellite tv receivers/decoders, with the basic difference being that the android tv boxes run the android operating system.

They are capable of doing virtually everything your android smartphone can (but of course we know this this is dependent on the device's CPU, amongst other components).

There are quite a number of manufacturers out there who produce these devices, which are seen as a cheap alternative to purchasing smart tv's but some highend ones can be quite expensive.

While I've never used one personally, I am facinated by their functionalities and would like techies and those who have encountered the device to please educate us on the pro/cons, some of the best to buy as well as those to avoid and even all round reviews and ratings comparing them to satellite tv' smart tv's and in some cases the possibility of using it as a home desktop computer.

It's mainly network signal dependent.

If network signal in your location is poor, it's as good as dead..
And mostly it drains data like mad..sadly no network service provides unlimited data over here

Just ordered one. I'm waiting to see in action when I get it. My interest was in a good spec, 4g ram, octacore, 64gb memory running android 9.

From experience using phone, I'm pretty sure I'll be able be impressed with it, especially watching matches

It doesn't mean it cant be used to watch movies and carryout other functions. Poor network only takes away your ability to stream/download online content

I own one currently and it works perfectly fine. Android TV boxes are good alternatives to cable TV if you live in a country with fast internet connections. Just sync with your home wifi, connect the HDMI cable and you're good to go! With mine I can watch CNN, BBC, SkyNews, Fox, MSBC, Aljazeera, CNA, EuroNews, Australia, French, German, Italian, Chinese news channels; Sports channels such as Bein, Fox, Supersport, NBA; Movie channels, MTV, Discovery channels, Food/Travel channels, and tons of Mainland Chinese and Hong Kong channels...Mine doesn't come with Netflix though.

I don't think so. Android TV boxes are like smart phones which use either phone data or wifi connections to access the internet. For you second question, I think it can because It has an SD slot and two USB ports. But I've never thought about it because my TVs all have USB ports.

Question #1: NO!
Question #2: Yes! Movies copied onto a USB / SD card can be viewed through the TV box.

Setting > files > external device > media - movies ,photos, music > select viewing option - kudi / video player

The only reason I have not bought an Android TV box is because of the data consumption. I'm a sucker for HD quality outputs (1080p minimum) and this one go finish my data. When we have a truly reliable unlimited data plan, then I will get one. For now, lemme be watching my DStv in peace.

Please since you've been using it for a while now, can you give us an approximate of the average monthly data consumption of the box so we here in Nigeria have an idea of the amount of data we need to buy to keep it running. Honestly some of us are tired of this DSTV/GoTV bullcrap and are really interested in getting a better alternative.

Never bothered to check about the amount of data the box consumes because I use with wifi. Below is the photo of the data consumed so far.

I've also seen videos online of people using the boxes and a tv as a pc workstation. Who has tried this and how effective is it?

Hahaha! Not let fear hold you. 232gb is ludicrous na! It must be a mistake. In 9ja with 4-6gb you are good to go!
