pls don't let's shy away from the truth. government at any level in Nigeria can't sustain electricity. ordinary road our state government, they can't maintain. ordinary pipe borne water they can't provide. schools are dilapidated.. salaries they can't pay. light railway lines Lagos fourth largest economy in africa, has been battling for over ten years. the subsidy government is paying on electricity some people are raking billions from it.
the contract given to the discos is just a padi padi arrangement.
Siemens should take over
You seem not to grasp the underlying message I was passing. We can't continue like this. Even if Siemens ßhoukd take over it should not be the entire nation.

My point is we need restructuring for us to move forward. You keep saying no government can sustain electricity as if the fg over the years have don any better.

What exactly is the benefit of the national grid? We need to build the nation up regionally through healthy competition all this holistic approach to things won't help us.

If this will solve the headache, why not.

The present Discos are dancing disco with Nigerians and their intelligence.

Briefing reporters after the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in the State House thursday, the Minister of Power, Mr. Saleh Mamman, said whereas Nigeria currently generates 13,000 megawatts of electricity, it transmits 7,000 to Discos while the distribution companies can only distribute 3,000 megawatts to end users.

The bolded caught my attention.

So, according to the lousy and talkative Minister, Nigeria generates 13,000 megawatts and are only able to transmit 7000 megawatts almost half the amount generated to Discos, while the Discos, in turn, are only able to distribute 3,000 megawatts, almost half of what was transmitted to them to end-users.

I'm seriously trying to make any sense of what gave the minister the right or moral compass to accuse others of what he is guilty of.

Mumu people, na only how to apportion blames and award bogus contracts to selves dem sabi.
Oga calm down, even if they transmit 13000MW the discos can only distribute 3000MW, that would amount to colossal waste. Improvement in transmission capacity is still ongoing bust most of the with some project coming to fruition soon but even when they come this yeye Disco still don't have the capacity to distribute it. The FG is just decieving itself, the Disco don't have the technical and financial capacity to turn around the the electricity distribution network. The FG should just seize the network from them and hand it over to a more competent hand for effective distribution capacity.

Truth be told! We Nigerians are the ones giving these firms the free hand to scam us. If only we can rise up to challenge their evil knowing what our rights entails, this rubbish will stop, I tell you

FarahAideed:
Bro that is their primary business model to sell darkness to Nigerians ,they intentionally reject 70 percent + of the electricity Gencos send to them and then make sure they bill you for the long hours you were in darkness , that's how they make free money . It's one of the most mind boggling forms of corruption I have seen

Siemen will be better off than discos. Discos and NERC are 5 and 6. Both frustrating the govt.

Be that as it may, are you telling me that government cannot set aside $1 billion a year, every year to add to our generating capacity or even $2 billion? If they had started setting aside $2 billion dollars for every year since 2014 when the privatisation was completed, and maybe setting aside an extra $500 million for a gradual building up of infrastructure to boost distribution wouldn't 60% of this country's power problems have been solved by now?

Lostz:
you government need to first invest in infrastructures needed to generate and transmit . your Discos only invest in distribution.

assuming you get new Discos who transmit to 100% capacity" which is almost impossible even in developed countries" will the 7000mw they receive be enough?
I heard you need more than $1b to generate 1000mw nowadays and we need more than 100000mw to provide electricity for all Nigerians. will China agree to borrow us $150b?
for now constant electricity is a dream that we can't achieve. changing Discos will not change anything

I don't think you know what you are saying.

Why not wait until we can make mobile phones before using the one you have right now?
This does not make sense to me.

Lolz. You are funny. How much fuel do you buy to run your gen for like 8hrs a day, I would assume maybe 1k. Now calculate that for 30days. Let's say you were given light for 8 hrs light for 30days. Would you pay 30k without complaining. 24hrs light would be X3 that is like 90k. Do you think an average Nigerian would not think of playing smart. Electricity is not cheap I.
well you know we Nigerians now can always adjust no matter the situation it's in our DNA!!! if the bill is way too much trust most average person they will boycott it until the price is reduced considerably , and fg will subside it too. and don't forget to service a Gen is not cheap! with that be said with constant light you won't need Gen or worry about servicing and change of oil and workmanship! if you calculate all of the above I just mentioned you will see that it's almost the same and don't forget Gen noise can be really annoying!! and everybody will start using prepaid metre instead of analog and estimated billing which we are having now, so you get to pay for what you use instead of the other way around grin grin and everyone will start using energy saving appliances!! trust me we will adjust just fine!!!!!

How many people on your street fit afford generator?? What I am saying is that majority of the population would rather steal this light and bypass the meter instead of paying. If commissioners, police officers, even EFCC, highly placed government officials can bypass meters now, what do you think the average Nigerianwill do?

I believe the current law doesnt stop the state governments from doing that. But Which state has the financial capacity to build a brand new transmission network? To disconnect from the national grid, the state needs to first build power generation and transmission infrastructure.
of which they will run away from so that enough monies to run campaigns.. you see why true federalism is needed to have project and value driven governors??

Siemens gave Egypt 15,000 MW in 3 years. In Ghana, cost of electricity is nearly 4 times what we pay here, but it is steady and constant so you can plan, do your business and do stuff.

This is a major be that should have been done years back. But prepare for strike actions from the NUEE.
at the least all the serviced apartment real estate business can go screw themselves.. it's so disheartening to see how difficult and how much monies people pay just to utilize electricity for a country that is over 50 years old..

We will pay, worst case scenario, people will learn to switch off lights and electronics when not needed. People will become very power consumption conscious. So if what you can afford is N5k monthly, you live your life according to N5k. No running of AC indiscriminately.

It is a whole lot more comfortable than this generator/NEPA/solar mess the Nigerian finds himself in.

I know association of DisCos, GenCos and transmission will soon start lobbying with sacks of money to kill this effort.
I think anyone who comes with a bribe should be shot in the head on live TV.. when can we ever get it right like singapore.

This is what i recommended then before Jonathan went to share the Power infrastructures among his cronies. Give it to the likes of Simens, General Electric, Gazprom and other foreign Power companies. We are guaranteed of improved Power supply but it will come at a high cost. These foreign companies would build their own infrastructures along side the existing NEPA infrastructures so that people who cant afford the foreign ones can still go with the cheaper and non-consistent NEPA.
the government must be willing to support these companies and manage the local content requirements as communities and locals might disrupt infrastructural installations..

Nigeria is a very funny and useless country..nigerians detests development.. the FG should enforce development.
