As Universities and Corporate Organizations continue Scratch their Heads on how to devise effective ways to a database that can capture their Students and Staff, A Lecturer in the University of Port Harcourt, Dr Omoankhanlen Akighbe, has Developed a Bio-metric attendance control software that would enable Lecturers to deploy fingerprints scanning in taking class attendance and ascetaining the number of students in the Examination Halls.
Dr Akhigbe who is the current acting Head of Department of Management in the Faculty of Management Sciences, Demonstrated the new technology to his students in class to prove it' Efficacy.
Video Footage of the new software has since gone viral on the social media as some students in the Department of Management were seen accessing their classrooms via the emergent software, Before Now, Lecturers have found it extremely difficult to account for all their students, as some of them Manually signed the Attendance register on behalf of their classmates, friends and associates without being in detected by the Lecturers. Some dubiously motivated students even went to the extremity of sneaking into examination halls to help their friends pass, or out-rightly write for them.
''If this wonderful software is properly applied in our classrooms, students will no longer have the opportunity of signing the attendance register on behalf of their classmates and friends, it would also be almost impossible for impersonators and examination contractors to enter any venue to perpetrate their illegal trade. With this new wonder software, students can now personally identify themselves through their fingerprints and can no longer impersonate their colleagues or friends,'' Dr Akhigbe assured our correspondent. It will be recalled that the new app was developed when the Acting Head of Department assigned a Master of Science seminar project topic entitled: Content and reactions to compliance towards biometric Technology in paramilitary Organisations in Port Harcourt-Nigeria To a Medical Doctor at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Dr Onua Azubuike, who was working on the project topic under the Acting Head of Department's supervision. The research was aimed at finding practical solution to the issue of biometric class attendance control. Based on the Preliminary result, Dr Akhigbe decided to expand on the research work. ''I wanted to ascertain how a biometric attendance control software could be deployed to handle access to classrooms in Nigerian universities. It took me six years to perfect the software on how to manage biometric data system to account for all students in my classroom and apply same to institutions of higher learning in the country to ensure the integrity of examinations and other classrooms activities,'' Dr Akhigbe said.
The software, which is still at the experimental stage, is yet to be formally reported and demonstrated to relevant authorities of the University of Port Harcourt. It is only when the Management of the University formally presents it to the senate for approval that the software can become fully operationalon a University-wide basis.

attendance is compulsory in our runs girls infested schools. anything short of that will amount to govt just funding peoples certificate ambition and not skill/knowledge acquisition.
Cultists also and of course the ghost lecturers who detest IPPIS like coronavirus.

This is not "developed"

It has always been in existence. Biometrics and Active Directory.

You can say he's the first to come up with the idea of using it in classroom in Nigeria -Yes!

True. But if they can study and pass their exams, meaning they have knowledge in their field of study, then why must they come to class? It is like marking lecture notes --- it doesn't make sense. It's not secondary school.

Classes aren't compulsory yet the student expect a miracle to pass. When the lecturer sets difficult question, same student would be crying foul because class is not compulsory.

But if they can pass the class why is attendance so important?

Ignorance! Attendance carry marks.

Attendance is key in full time programs, you need to have between 50-75% attendance to qualify to write exam
