He might be saying the truth who knows, Abacha met $200m in our foreign reserves and grew it to $9b when oil price was $8 or $9 per barrel.

It's well...

Sometimes we probably have to dig into some facts.

A lot is still hidden.

What I take from this is simply. Abacha might have stolen. possibly.

But the fear that Abacha loot is being used as cover up for looting that is a 1000 times more than that attributed to Abacha is very real.

We have been out of the Abacha era for how long now, how have we fared?

Are we currently at the valley that would lead us to that summit as depicted in several economic models?

Or is the Nigerian case different (as in all other things) and there is no light at the end of our tunnel

Truth is that Abacha wasn't as bad as they painted him. At least it's now proven that he wasn't as bad as Buhari both in brutality and in corruption.

At Oputa Panel, I asked questions, the monies that were transferred into numerous accounts outside Nigeria, in whose accounts were these monies and in whose companies’ names? When were the monies taken out? Was it during General Abacha’s tenure as Head of State or when he was Minister of Defence? Nigerians need to know how much monies were in such banks and in whose accounts were they lodged? What was the agreement between the account holders and Gen. Abacha? Were the monies for Abacha or for Nigeria? Basic questions as to how monies were moved outside Nigeria must be asked and the countries in whose banks such monies were kept also have reports; what were the reports at the time of deposit? Which year?

These are critical questions. Hopefully, some newspaper will pick this up.

Buhari is and was the best leader we ever had, closely followed by Abacha.
Just because they were both unlucky to have huge media drive against them because of their disciplinarian/authoritarian modes, .
Most people only know about Abacha from what they read not what they saw, same with Buhari.

interesting

It is a Western Propaganda game, they also sanctioned Jonathan because of gay right and crippled the fight against boko haram and when Jonathan attempted to smuggle money to buy arms in SouthAfrican black market, they hurriedly seized the money and the private jet

Abacha faced the stiffest sanctions ever worst than that of Iran and nothing was sold to Nigeria by any country affiliated to US, UK, but still he completed more projects in Abuja and Nigeria than all this Useless people we now have , I still wonder how he manages to ship out crude oil, sell it and get money to build our reserve, import drugs and needed commodity and still have PTF building project up and down

Oil at 8 to 9 dollars and still ran Nigeria despite sanctions (zero foreign investment) and was able to run the largest infrastructural expansion since the Gowon years and is still returning money to Nigeria twenty years later.... wow.

Democracy is damn expensive... but like marriage to a man.... absolutely necessary to sustain life.

But we need to cut down the cost of running this country. It is just unsustainable. We desperately need to restructure. If we were an enterprise, changing CEO's will not bring about a reversal of downward fortunes if they were all singing from the same hymn sheet. It is the courageous CEO that will change the way the company is set up and how they do business that will succeed.

Nigeria needs a new direction.

Mixed feeling.

Top military brass still respect Abacha.

But since anything linked to him have been associated with looting, they dare not show this openly.

But from what comes out of their mouth in secret, Abacha seems like the last Gen we had.

Abacha was prolly killed because of this money , and since Africans are criminals and western countries were even more crazier criminal, instead of repatriating the money once just like Obama did to Iran in paying them back their $450 million, Obasanjo hurriedely made a deal with the Abacha family to pay them $100 million USD in exchange for the $5billion traced to various accounts including that of Bagudu governor of Kebbi

I agree with you. I also think they have been talking about loot to cover up Abacha’s murder and it worked because no one ever asked.

This is godamn deep.
Food for thought. One thing I hv come to realize in dis country is that we don't argue objectively.
Ever since the started recovering the said loot, on whose names was the money deposited? We only hear Abach. That shows dat something was missing or truth had not been told.
Always painting Abacha as a looter without telling the masses his achievement during his regime.
After GEJ's administration, atleast there was names used in their looting.
Secondly, upon all the sanctions, economy was fucking good. Better than what we hv witnessed since 1999 till date.
If and only if we are serious, this Abacha loot calls for questions and review

Buhari has stole more than Obasanjo and Abacha put together. Foreign debt from $7billion in 2015 to $25billion in 2020 where is the money cos Nigeria is still and will forever remain a mess

Truth is that Abacha wasn't as bad as they painted him. At least it's now proven that he wasn't as bad as Buhari both in brutality and in corruption.

Here we go again. Citizens and kings. We never seem to be able to see beyond individuals to the reak deal, institutions. Perhaps that is why we are so religious in Nigeria. We need an image to depend on.

The correct 'truth' is that the quality of any man who aspires to leadership is measured by the effect he has on the institutions he commands and by extension the effectiveness of that institution in promoting the good of those the institution was set up to serve.

So basically there can be no military Head of State anywhere that can pass the test of quality leadership simply by their nature which is the truncating of civil liberties, which means the stopping of citizens from exercising their franchise in choosing leadership and learning from the success and failures in the process.

Remember the one and only function of government anywhere in the world is simply to: Organise Society'. It is the strength of society, the intellect of society, the wealth of society that combines to prosper a people and develop a nation, not government. That is why a weak people, an ignorant people, a divided people can never experience progress no matter who rules or what kind of government is practiced.

Military rule simply does not let the average citizen go to the school of society building that leads to national development. That is why the first thing they do is suspend the Legislature (the crucible for debates that leads to understanding, agreements and solidarity) and the Judiciary (where civil disputes are decided) choosing to rule instead by decree.

A simple, poignant example.

If a military ruler was in power operating by decree the issue of farmers/herdsmen conflicts will have been settled, swiftly one way or the other most likely in favour of one side and to the displeasure of the other. Such resultant 'peace' cannot be said to be sustainable nor progressive and often ends badly but what democracy brings is an opportunity to negotiate a solution where resolutions are more likely done on a basis of give and take. Nobody wins all, nobody loses all. This is the model all successful, prosperous nations adopt.

The quality of leadership is then measured by any leaders' ability to expand, sustain and deepen such demcratic mechanisms that guarantee civil liberties and prosperity.

Funny how $4b suddenly became what’s holding Nigeria back. I really don’t think Abacha was a looter, I think they took him out because both the Nigerian and foreign elites couldn’t control him because if the west does not have anything to do with his death, they would have made sure we got to the root of abacha’s death. Now they have killed him 20+ later. The country hasn’t really changed from what he left. I will prefer a military regime to the stupid democracy that’s only for the political class under the control of white men.
Fighting corruption and asking for impunity imbeciles
