True. While you can't control how people act towards you, you sure can control the way you react to them.

As for those who think they can intimidate you, I have no issues telling em a piece of my mind and staying away from them. The only thing I'll avoid is going physical coz
If trouble ensues, the law doesn't care who started it in the first place
Anger management is key but pray not to be on the spot as you said your piece of mind will always end in physical pieces.

Only FOOLISH tenants fight their landlords.

Bible forbids us to call people foolish

But where do we categorize this man ?

I always tell people, GIVE ME SPACE, say what you want to say from afar. Now you see the reason.

Many people are not healthy as you see them. Some people are just waiting for others to kill them and spend the rest of their lives behind bars.

If you don't like your landlord, PLS PACK OUT.

Its not the only house in Nigeria.
You are mad

Best comment so far. He was in a hurry to go to work where they pay him peanut where one year salary may not even generate savings to pay for the rent; a job where the owners can say they don't want you again. People will be worshipping their peanut jobs. Am sure his employers will not even help to bail him out should the option arise. Nonsense!!
Was it not from that peanut job that he paid the landlord rent? value what you have bro!

Don't be silly!

If someone allegedly banged at your door as I don't believe d tenant woke and started banging, what are u expected to do? Ignore or find out why?

Tenant obviously knocked and the landlady ignored bc she feels she is god that has rules.

Balance your sense of reasoning. Respect begets Respect. U dont know why d tenant was knocking, u ignored him until he broke d damn prison door
your head is hard read the story very well. This is why I don't like tenants palavar, the tenants will just start feeling like they own the house. Everybody agreed to something(including the man). I hope you build your own house one day and have tenants that will disrespect you

That is why I practice the principle of avoiding conflict whenever possible.
Behave like water. Go around the sided of obstacles placed in your way and keep yourself as low as possible ; the same way as flowing water flows around rocks and other obstacles in its path as it flows towards lower ground.

If Landlady had followed the water principle, she would likely have not tried arresting the man but find a an alternate way to make him pay.

If the man had practised the principle, he would not have used deadly force to push the woman down and find alternative way to free himself from her grip maybe by giving her money to repair the gate.

Always behave like flowing water and nothing can stop you reaching your goal. The same way all streams are flowing to reach their objective to reach lowest ground and become part of larger bodies of water.

We should all just pray we don't get into trouble of this nature because even with the best lawyer, he will still get at least two years .

It's manslaughter, its not intentional but the person is dead. The best, the best lawyer will do is plead for clemency

Another possible option is if the family withdraw the case and that's even if the govt don't decide to take it up.

Its a serious wahala
Forget that guy talking about good lawyer...in this Nigeria? Lol. Somebody is DEAD, and you're the direct cause of that death, so no stories wey police wan hear. If the landlady's family are intent on finishing this guy, they would instigate the police to charge him for murder sef. They would cook up stories to justify that charge.

Head or tail, the guy would have to spend millions (money wey he no kuku get) to get out of this predicament. If he doesn't have such money and can't raise it, he will rot away in prison for sure.

This is an avoidable situation.
To start with, the guy is a legitimate tenant in that house.
Secondly he wants to leave the compound and not that he wants to enter the compound at odd hour.

True that there was a rule to be opening the gate from 5:30am. There are some certain situations that could affect that rule.
Assuming the Landlady's child was sick and she want to rush her to hospital around 4am. Will she stay back cos it was not up to 5:30am?...No.
Probably, the guy has an emergency and wanted to leave the compound around 5am. You have no right to lock him up irrespective of that rule.

The woman claimed that she was not strong to be opening the gate by 5:30am. She has younger children.
When the tenant was knocking on the entrance door, she would have ask one of her children to please go and give the "idiot" key to open the gate. That would have solved the problem.

The guy threatened to break down the door if they refused to open the door for him. They still find it hard to release the key to him. The Landlady was forming the godess of the yard.

The guy went ahead to break the key. At this point, the woman who said she was not strong to open gate jumped down to fight the tenant. That strength she used to come for the fight would have bn enough to even throw the key to the tenant from the window and this problem would've bn solved.

Why holding the guy's clothe? You would've allowed him to go after which you would've gone to the police to report him. They would've arrested him on malicious damage.

When you give someone your house as a Landlord, pls know where ur right starts and end. Don't go dey over do urslf.

She caused her death. I won't blame the young man. It's just that he was unfortunate. She had to come out after he broke d door. Why not avoid problem and gently open the door for the man. That's why most houses in lagos are full of landladies after they must have killed their husbands or claim their fathers properties. May GOD help that young man.

With a good lawyer, the punishment will be lesser. It's just unfortunate that the woman died.
The woman was just bn foolish.
A legitimate tenant wants to leave the house to go to the place he gets the money to pay you the house rent, u refused to open the gate because you are the landlady and when he broke the key, u had the strength to fight.

Operation blame the landlord/landlady.

The man should have held the key since he leaves early and mama has stated she's not strong enough.

If you had read through critically, you will see where she said she wasn't strong enough to open the doors as early as 5:30am. But they insisted she be in possession of the keys. If he knew he is an early riser why didn't he agree to hold the keys
Whoever you are the woman has no business with locking or opening is she a gatekeeper?
They only did her bid as demigod.

Any general place individuals should have their keys and the door lock should be the type that can be locked or open from within an without.

Sure they agreed, it was not the next day the tenant woke to leave this early. He has been complying with the time, then there arises a need for him to leave early, the landlady heard d knocks, did not check to know why, did not send her wards, she stayed put bc her rules are cast in stone or her tenants are In prison, what if someone is been rushed to hospital? Landlady will stay put bc tenant banged and did not knock?

How come she had strength to come out only when d door was broken? She is a wahala woman
God bless you

Beside non of the tenants agreed to be the one opening and closing the gate wen she asked and she also stated in the meeting that she's not strong enough to be waking up as early as 5 to 5:30am.

I'm not blaming anyone. but anger management is very important in our dailies.

The best advice, landlords or landlady's, don't stay or leave in the same compound's with your tenants.

Men and viloence tufiakwa .
They will never learn .How many of his fellow men has he pushed down from his work place down to the street. The only place they exercise their prowess is with women , can't really count how many times I have seen them fighting apart from exchanging words and checking hands and laughing later on . But once is a woman's case you will see them jumping like frogs like they have power.
Now she is gone hope he can go to work early.
