I guess it affects those of us who are yet to Land?

Closing the border to everyone except Canadian and US citizens and Canadian PR's

It seems American citizen were exempt which I find strange as the Corona virus is spreading a lot down south.
Well the Canadian economy is 70% dependent on the US and the current occupant of the white house is not a very logical fellow so Trudeau is trying to balance public heath and the economy.

I don't blame him.

Yes. If you haven't landed, I don't think you can do so until the ban is lifted.

It took the Prime Minister's wife getting infected for the government to close the borders. Hmmm

Any mention of how long the borders would be closed? I've been looking for it.

Hi everyone, I’ll be coming to Winnipeg in May. Was going to pick Alberta but I hear there are no jobs.. I am a pharmacist and working on getting licensed and all that.
My issue is right now from my research I can’t really find jobs in Manitoba compared to Alberta (using job bank -)

Is there anyone currently in Alberta or Manitoba? Please tell me what the job prospects are for pharmacists after everything necessary is completed. Please respond..anyone.

I live in Manitoba..Though an Engineer. Not too familiar with pharmacist job prospects, but I know there are a few pharmacist I have seen. The thing is that if you don't school in Canada, your chances of getting such job is very slim with your foreign qualification..

Not to hold brief for Justin Trudeau (heck I'm not even a fan of the guy) but what would you rather have him do? Most of his decision thus far have been based on solid scientific evidences and as the science changes from day-to-day, so are his decisions. On this particular issue, I think he has responded in a calm, measured, and reasonable manner you would expect from a leader.

I know it's easy at times like this to blame globalization (rightly or not) for all societal ills. But on the flip side, within few months of the outbreak we have been able to map the entire genome of the COVID-19 virus, understand its mode of transmission, and just yesterday the first vaccine trial took place. What do you think made all that possible? International collaborations (ergo Globalization). And that's not mentioning all the numerous advantages that you have personally benefited and will continue to benefit from globalization.

Not just Justin, we've all "got skin in the game".

Please when offered a job in Toronto, in healthcare services what salary range should one expect/bargain, that would be enough to cover all living cost for a new immigrant (for me & spouse no children yet)

What role? What specialty?

It can range from $15/hr as a PSW to $200/hr as a Cardiothoracic surgeon.

*Edited* Average monthly living expenses for my family of 4 (2 adults, 2 kids) in the Toronto area is somewhere between $3,000 to $4,000.

You and your spouse should spend less.

I would say between $4,000 and $6,000. Rent is about $3,000. Then there might be daycare costs, etc.

Yes it’s “some agent”...but I’m to pay after getting my visa.

I’ll have to see my visa and confirm before payments. What do you think?

I think cost of living is very subjective. A family of 4 can spend $8,000 per month while another family of same composition will spend $3,500 in the same Toronto. One can get a 2 bed basement for $1,800.

I assumed $0 child care fees since ON gives new immigrants full subsidy in the first year of landing and subsequently, if they fall below a certain income threshold.

I was thinking that was on the low side as well. I live in the middle of nowhere Saskatchewan and my monthly expenses for the same family size is just over $4000 or more sef with only one child in Part time daycare. I can only imagine what it would be for Toronto. Na boss people dey live for Toronto side and Vancouver.

This is actually true. A good example in my city. There are docs living in $1,000,000 houses and there are also other docs living in $500,000 and $350,000 houses.

For that same amount, one can rent a near new 3 bedroom house plus basement with a fenced landscaped yard in some cities in some other places.

You na big Oga naw. cheesy I doubt you were spending that much when you just landed and were finding your feet. With time, one starts to earn more and spend more. Mortgage, more cars etc

I live in the Toronto area with my family and we don't (well, we try not to) spend up to $4,000 monthly.

Very true. A colleague in one of the small jobs I did when I just landed was earning same exact wage with me but was driving a $50,000 electric car. Me? I was managing to keep my head up. cheesy

My rent was $800 a month for a basement in NE Calgary back when I landed in 2012. That was also when the economy was booming sef. grin
A basement would still be around the same price or maybe just $50 dollars more.
