MTN has announced major changes to its data offerings following engagements with the Competition Commission in South Africa.

The changes will focus on the affordability of monthly prepaid bundles, lifeline data and the zero-rating of data for public benefit service websites, the group said.

The most notable changes are as follows:

1. Cheaper data: From 1 April, MTN said that it will also reduce the price of its monthly bundles of 1GB and below by between 25-50% and specifically the 1GB monthly bundle will decrease by 33% from R145 to R99.

2. Free Data
3. Zero-rated websites
4. Open time

Last week, MTN's direct competitor, Vodacom, announced that it would cut prices by at least 30% less for their data bundles.

MTN South Africa CEO Godfrey Motsa said he was confident that prices would continue to drop once the spectrum allocation is finalised.

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) is currently evaluating bids for the allocation of high-demand spectrum, which will enable mobile operators to roll out 4G and 5G infrastructure.

"I am confident that this year we are going to get spectrum," he said.

It shows its possible for MTN to cut prices - especially as the cost of data across Africa is too high compared to the rest of the world.

In SA the public began a campaign called #DataMustFall some two years ago. And now the people are getting what they demanded.

So u can also lobby your own representatives in Nigeria.

The posted picture should be implemented however cut in the price of data in Nigeria may further deteriorate the quality of service delivery. As I type, MTN 4g in many locations are poor

Well I don't blame mtn, they are just here to make money. Blame Nigerians who will report to mtn when their cheat leaks.

When a foreigner wants to take your citizens as slaves, its the same people that will make handcuffs for them. Nigerians got what they deserved. Keep enjoying your mtn!!!!
