The response and efforts by state governments to curtail spread of coronavirus is truly commendable. Without these efforts the spread amongst population would have been enormous, particularly in states like Lagos. So the manner in which government has responded may appear inacceptable to some, like marketers, transporters, shop owners.

Change is difficult. Retail marketing is the survival line for Nigerians and people can handle not opening market for one or two days....but closing shop for two weeks will no doubt result in massive and irrecoverable loss. The question of recovery is heavy on the mind.

If our system have a social programme that citizens can lean on for support it would make a great difference in the way marketers react...there will be confidence and reassurance of recovering some, maybe not all, of their losses.

At this time, such a social program is absent. Thus government must approach its responsibility for safety with a sense of balance also and empathy for the people that are economically impacted. We dont want unemployment to surge, it will result in increase in criminality. Marketers will lay off their helpers and staff to conserve drain and loss.

We need moderation on both sides.

Good point...but this isn't a normal situation.

In a way, Nigeria has to take all available measures to stop this thing from spreading out of control...because our health system is not ready for a COVID 19 epidemic.

Italy that spends more on health than we do is already running at full capacity....and can't cope anymore. Imagine that happening in Nigeria.

Plus if any retailer caught corona virus....the amount they would spend treating it might be far more than any losses sustained.

It's (hopefully) just for a few weeks. Let's be patient.
