This is stupid. I hope it doesn't affect Nairaland. The #ShutDownNigeria people don't have a very deep understanding of how an economy works. The vast majority of business activities in a developing country like Nigeria are essential. Very few people go to Lagos just for fun. Our leaders think that shutting things down is a viable alternative to massive testing and isolation of those who test positive, and we are cheering them on. There is no quick fix to the Coronavirus. There is no alternative to massive testing, isolation and contact tracing. We have to use our brains.

To be shutting down a country to stop a virus is like shooting a man dead to kill the sickness in his body. Does it work? Yes. But it's also stupid. I say instead of that, find a drug that targets the sickness in his body and kills it without killing the man. That's the only real solution to this issue.

So Nairaland is more important to you than everyone getting this virus...? Prevention is better than cure. And I’m sure things are being done to cure the infected ones.

You are wrong.
Shutdown(excluding essential services such as food, medicine and security) is the best thing now, because Nigeria cannot deal with the virus ravaging the entire population of 200m. We just dont have the faciliies to cope and even though 80% of those contract it recover, even 1% fatality in Nigeria is 2m people, which is a lot of people to allow to die. We can't deal with it. it's better to contain the virus and let it die out rather than just let it run amok freely in the population. I'm sure you have seen the deaths in italy and spain. China is lying about their figures but they had to lockdown the whole province, Lockdown while still early is the best way to slow the spread and try to extinguish it.

Please let's be guided. Alaba market has been closed since last week.

You have very valid points. Buy then you cant liken the people of Nigeria to those of South Korea and China. There are so many people who are not enlightened about the virus and refuse to believe in its existence. We are more like India, a very stubborn set of people who need brute force most times to even listen to things that'll save lives.
The government cannot provide face masks or even sanitizers for anyone. A pack of face mask is already 15k, how many people can afford that?

There are only two countries whose efforts to beat the Coronavirus have been really successful. China and South Korea. I suggest that they are the only people that we should be listening to. They both encourage the widespread use of facemasks. They both do massive testing and isolation of infected people. China shut down part of their country but South Korea didn't do that despite having around 1,000 new cases per day at peak. They just continued to do every smart thing that could reduce the rate of transmission of the virus, and it worked and is working.

If you put a mask on every face, educate everybody about how to conduct their business without spreading the virus, and do massive testing of all people suspected to have the virus, and that doesn't work (it will), that's when you can start thinking of shutting things down. Our politicians won't even distribute face-masks to market women in Lagos who are begging them for it, or wear them, but they want to #ShutDownNigeria.

I don't agree with you on this.....India of over 1.3billion population is on total 21 days lockdown...If you have a weak health institution, you don't wait for pandemic to overwhelm such institution. Just look at Italy and Spain, if they have shut down long ago, despite having certain level of good health institution, they won't be where they are now. USA and UK heading that path of tsunami. Africa cannot take such blow, strict and
tough measuress required!

You are saying this because you have no idea of how Italy became the headquarters of this pandemic. Take your time to go read how things travelled round the country .

And for the economy , go ask italy now if they care about the economy or about people's life now . The three Economic agent are government, firm and house hold . All of this are human . You need save their lives first before thinking about the economy .

....and finally , I and you know that almost nothing is working in this country but, this is not the time to talk about it , since we do not have enough testing kits , we should try the very next alternative to make sure in reducing the spread .

Oga Seun, first, the world is no longer talking about economy for now. It's survival first. Only the living discuss economy.

Besides, shutting down is a measure being copied from countries worst affected - China, Italy, UK, US, Iran etc and for real, it helped contained
the spread as we have seen in China and Italy lately.

Third, Nigeria can't do massive testing because they are no enough test kits available. The 20,000 test kits that Jac Ma donated is being
used for Aso Villa, governors and politicians. I hear NCDC personnel are usually happy testing politicians because they get cash gratification
in return. As a poor man, you'll call their line until Jesus comes .... no answer.

I fear for Naija's future

Major reason why governors are closing their borders to prevent the spread to common man .Davido was able to test 31 crew members less than 48hrs and they claim testing kits is not enough.

Closing interstate borders is actually very silly at this point.

You can limit movement but closing? Also states don't have jurisdictions over federal roads. Are you telling me you are going to Lock Lagos-ibadan expressway and limit the movement of millions moving to other states ?

What about fuel tankers? People returning from Lagos to other states? It takes only one essential service person to infect thousands so closing interstate borders won't work.

We aren't testing enough so we can nip things in the bud
and isolate people we are closing interstate borders instead. Like there is a physical border between Lagos and Ogun that you can just carry stick and block the movement of people. Nigerian politicians are always dumb, always putting the cart before the horse.

For the first and second bolded, the move is more like limiting movements and not closing, it was stated in the contents of the post that transportation of essential commodities is still encouraged.

For the third bolded, it actually works. Check out this simulation to understand how it works properly.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxAaO2rsdIs But, it's worth noting that it actually only has any meaningful effect if the infection hasn't spread seriously in Ogun as well.

And the last bolded, nothing works better than quick testing and isolation, but our leaders would rather purchase 2020 camry than test kits. We're in a serious condition here.
