This week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown was interesting, to say the least. It was the first show that was taped ahead of time since the coronavirus pandemic forced a change in how WWE runs its shows, and came not long after reports of multiple wrestlers pulling out of WrestleMania 36 due to that very same pandemic.

Despite that, WWE went ahead with a show that didn’t really address any of the reports and even promoted matches that, according to those very reports, aren’t going to happen.

Roman Reigns pulled out of the show, but WWE spent much of the night promoting his previously scheduled Universal title match against Goldberg. There were reports that an angle would run on SmackDown tonight explaining this and giving us a replacement but that’s not at all what happened. In fact, a replay aired of Reigns vs. Triple H from WrestleMania 32 before Triple H appeared on the broadcast to give a prediction for Reigns vs. Goldberg.

The Miz was also the subject of reports, with word coming that he has been sick and would have to be quarantined. That would mean his not working WrestleMania 36 as previously planned. However, WWE went ahead with airing an angle where Miz & John Morrison interfered in The New Day vs. The Usos to determine who would challenge for the SmackDown tag team titles and an announcement was made that both teams would get the shot in a ladder match.

An angle was shot where Baron Corbin knocked Elias down from a high place and there may be an injury that affects the latter’s status for WrestleMania 36. The match is still on for now, but it was played like that could change.

Drew Gulak defeated Shinsuke Nakamura, which made Daniel Bryan vs. Sami Zayn for the Intercontinental championship official.

Bray Wyatt challenged John Cena to a “Firefly Fun House” match, which would presumably just be how WWE is getting to having the two work a match at a unique set and not in the arena with no fans.

Otis vs. Dolph Ziggler was made official.

The opening segment featured all the wrestlers involved in the SmackDown women’s championship match, without any announcement of a replacement for Dana Brooke. It appears as though the match will go ahead as a Fatal 5-Way instead of a Six-Pack Elimination match.

That’s everything, for now.

I really enjoyed Nikki on commentary, she has soomuch energy but I don't like how Alexa beat Asuka clean angry undecided

But that firefly fun house is really a must watch, I'm very excited for that match

Gulak and Bryan should be together forever grin

Ah, OG Torrie Wilson that revolutionised the famous bra and panties match. God, wrestling was really sexist back in the day.

Feminism wasn't a thing back then, they would have had a field day bringing McMahon down

It wasn't only Vince, just watch any of those matches and see the derogatory things the broadcast commentators were saying especially lawler. It's actually insane, and they pat themselves on the back for being the solution to a problem they caused.

When you condition your audience to only see women's wrestling one way then that is what they will always expect from the women. Even when Lita and trish were finally given a chance there were still segments on raw that women were tested less than. Move a couple years later and then we have the Divas, women segments was seen as piss break cos they never lasted up to 10 minutes

like I said earlier, it was what the audience wanted that was delivered to them, you are using today's eyes to judge what happened then. During those times, the fans wanted promiscuity, lewdness, trash talking, decadence, gore and violence and Vince delivered it to them.

The attitude Era is still regarded as the best Era of wrestling in wwe because the fans got exactly what they wanted and then some. Back then, women being sexualized was cool, heck even female fans partook in it. 90 percent of the female wrestlers were looking like pornstars and everything about them was sexualized, from their entrance to the storylines that they had. I remember vividly when Stephanie McMahon was called slut and wh0re by the fans and nobody complained, male wrestlers treating the female wrestlers like trash and sexual interests and the fans loved them. When was the last time you ever saw such lewd storylines in wwe recently? Why because the fans are no longer interested in that so Vince tailored wwe to suit today's audience.

You have to understand that the entertainment industry as a whole then was like that even the video games because people had no issues with that up until recently that this feminism shiit started that we were now getting women being taken more seriously and less sexualized than before hence the reason we are getting female wrestlers like Becky, Rhonda, Baszler, Charlotte main eventing PPVs and cutting it in wwe whereas previously they wouldn't have made the cut at the top.

i see your point and i know your right and i know that we cannot look at a lot of things that happened in the past with the morality of the present and if it was happening in every wrestling promotion everywhere then i would have said no problem, but as kaycee7 said women's wrestling was huge in japan and it didn't treat the women as less than, they even had a show in tokyo dome that drew over 40k.
