How to Choose Good Feed for Your Layers.

All chickens need to be fed a good diet. However, if you are raising a certain type of chicken (meat, egg, or pet) then there is a particular diet that suits them. Egg-laying chickens, in particular, need a special diet in order to produce eggs regularly and to produce eggs that have strong shells and will make it into your kitchen without breaking. Thankfully, making sure your laying hens produce a lot of healthy eggs is not rocket science. With a little bit of work and some diligence, you can make sure your hens produce for you.

Corn and soybean meal – Usually the most plentiful and lowest-cost sources of energy and well-balanced protein, thus it is extensively used.
Balancers and Concentrates – For preparing the poultry feed, concentrates and balances are special supplements which are prepared by the commercial poultry feed companies.

Salt – 0.2 to 0.5% is added to most poultry diets.
Supplemental lipids e.g. Millet (up to 5% of the diet) – May increase energy utilization.

Yellow pigmentation – Use as much yellow corn as possible plus good sources of xanthophyll, such as alfalfa meal or corn gluten meal, for the yellow coloration of the shanks, feet, skin, and egg yolks.
Non-nutritive additives are used for a variety of reasons – e.g., antibiotics (to stimulate growth & control diseases), arsenicals and nitrofurans (to improve performance), anti-parasitic compounds, anti-oxidative, and antifungal compounds.

Fish Oil – Fish oil is a dependable source of Vitamin A and D. Mainly it is used in chicken feed and laying hen’s feed. Fish oil is very effective when green pasture and sunlight is not adequate.

Maintain a healthy coop. The overall status and quality of your coop is going to impact egg production and will impact your hen's feed consumption. Unhealthy coops are breeding grounds for bacteria and disease, will contaminate your food, sicken your chickens, and potentially lower your egg yield. A few simple steps will prevent such problems. Consider:

Deep-cleaning the coop every month or so. Scrub out the coop with a scrub brush and spray it down with a bird-safe disinfecting spray, such as diluted white vinegar.
Cleaning up any droppings and rotting feed inside the coop once a week.
Allowing your chickens to roam free a couple of hours a day. Make sure they are safe from any potential predators, however.
Not overcrowding your coop with too many hens. The recommended size is 4 square feet (0.4 sq. m) per hen for birds that are allowed to free-range, and 10 square feet (1 sq. m) per hen for birds that are confined at all times.
