COVID-19: No Need Publishing Names Of Cash Transfer Beneficiaries –Tony Momoh by hisexcellency34(op): 2:11pm On Apr 14, 2020
Prince Tony Momoh, a former of Information and one of the national leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in this interview with TEMIDAYO AKINSUYI, speaks on issues arising from the Federal government’s cash transfer intervention programme, COVID-19 pandemic and other issues. Excerpts:

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Sadiya Umar Farouq has said 2.6m vulnerable persons are currently to benefit from the Federal government cash transfer intervention programme. Nigerians are asking, how do they determine these poorest people?

How have they been determining those they give money to in this Social Investment Programme? They have been telling us how they have been giving money out, N5,000 to some people and N10,000 to others. That has been going on for almost four years now. All these people that have collected so far, how were they determined? Did they not say there is a diary that contained the names of the beneficiaries? I even heard the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs talking about a list of N11million people in their social register. Are you saying the feeding programme in many states of the federation are fictions? I am aware that they went all over the country, including local government areas to find out the most deprived people that will need help and they have been giving help to such people. Are the beneficiaries complaining of not receiving help? I think the media should investigate to find out the truth.

Don’t you think the list of beneficiaries be made public so that Nigerians can know who gets what?

Why should the federal government publish the list? If you want to give rice to people, do you want to spend money again publishing those you gave rice to, or using the money for publication to buy more rice so that it can get to as many as possible? We need help and Nigeria is a country of thousands of communities. Each community knows itself and we practice the theory of be your brother’s keeper. In the villages we know ourselves within the communities and people in these communities don’t starve. So, the starvation that would have happen in developing countries where everybody is on his own doesn’t happen in Nigeria because we are our brother’s keeper.

There have also been complaints of giving out the cash. Can’t they do it in more organised way?

The money they are to give out, have they not been giving them out? They have been giving it out through a procedure organised by the banks. Are the banks not working? If the banks were asked to do something, why won’t they do it? If they are to do it through it? The food they promised to distribute as palliatives, are they not distributing it in different areas?

Have you received any package or do you know of anybody who has received so far?

Do I belong to the group of deprived Nigerians so much that I will be waiting for N,5000 from the government as an elderstatesman? The fact is that those who belong to that category will receive it. As for how the poorest Nigerians are determined, they reach out to the communities to give the cash to the poorest among them. They know these poor ones and have been sending money to them. They have been giving N5, 000 to these people every month but now, they said they should give them N20, 000 in advance which they are already implementing.

Do you think the process has been transparent enough?

What do you mean by transparency? Are you saying that some people are pocketing the money? If there are abuses in the distribution, those affected should report to the appropriate authorities. If it is true, then all of us will start shouting that those involved should be prosecuted. Nigerians never trust anybody but it is understandable due to the fact that it is not easy to monitor. Monitoring governance is the constitutional role of the media. But the fact is everybody who is watching should monitor governance and then hold the government accountable to the people.

Well stated.

But the same people who claim to be the most successful are still the ones disturbing everyone because of 5k. The same 5k they claim can't recharge their phones for 1 hr, lol.

As for the lack of transparency being propagated by agents of darkness, Momoh has also addressed it squarely here.

If there are abuses in the distribution, those affected should report to the appropriate authorities.
Funny thing is that bonafide Nigerians dont really make much noise about this. undecided

Bruv, the truth of matter is that no one will die over 5k in most parts of Lagos and Ogun state if not for the sudden lock down.

Many people rely on daily money in Lagos to survive. e.g. taxi drivers, artisans etc. This people's savings have been wiped out in the period of two weeks that the lock down.

The lock down just exposed the the deep rooted fraud that has been going on all this while.

He is just running from pillar to post without even addressing the main reason..

How do people reason... what would it take to publish a register they claim to already have on their website?

Publish the register of the N5k then, let the people vet according to their communities.

Use biometric - No
Use the banks - No
Use BVN - No
You just want to share cash.
