The type of face mask worn by EU delegates is the not regular surgical mask, they are called ffp 3 masks. This type prvents the virus when fitted well.

am guessing u get ur covid updates only on nairaland. The face mask is just another way of preventing the virus from spreading. i.e an infectedd person is supposed to wear it to prevent the virus from going airborne during communication and infecting people. Although its a normal trend around the world for people both the infected and uninfected to wear face mask. Even the world health organization says face mask are not mandatory for an uninfected person.

You are both right actually.

Wearing face mask by everybody can prevent the spread and may not also prevent it.

It may prevent it in the sense that if an infected person sneezes or coughs directly on your face there is high possibility of you getting it. But when you have the mask on, even though the person sneezes or coughs on your face, your mouth and nose is protected (even though your eyes are still exposed), your chances of getting infected is reduced (though not totally eliminated due to your exposed eyes and also the droplets that will still remain on your face which you can then use your own hand to transfer it through touching your face and using the same hand to touch your nose, mouth or eyes.

As you said, social distancing is the best (because no one can sneeze, talk or cough on your face if you maintain your 6metres). The next is observing good hygiene i.e washing your hands from time to time (in this case if you have touched anything that has the virus on it you would wash it off thereby limiting the rate of infection when you touch your face (because we involuntarily touch our face countless times a day)
