Im an African but not from Nigeria. I'm wondering how come Nigerians didn't elect Goodluck Jonathan again after he brought the nigerian economy from 300 to 500 billion GDP and made the economy the biggest in Africa? And instead elected illiterate Buhari. Are Nigerians stupid? Below is a picture of Jonathan success between 2010-14.

You're an African, but not from Nigeria. And you're on NAIRALAND, asking if Nigerians are stupid. I don't know about Nigeria though, but I'm very sure wherever you're from, they must all be...

What is the problem? Its a simple question. Tell me how a smart people would make a decision like that? Give me a good reason... And im smart enough to realise a strong Nigerian economy will benefit all of Africa and that Nigeria has the potential to become a world power but tell me which group of people outside of Africa would shot themselves in the foot like this?

The only thing that pushed the economy up was high oil price. The moment oil price began to drop, he had to borrow money to pay ordinary salary.

Before I comment....

I'M NOT HERE TO DEFEND BUHARI, I DID NOT VOTE FOR HIM, I DO NOT SUPPORT HIM OKAY.

Having said that

1.The economy was at its peak, thanks to consistently high oil prices.

2.There's the problem in a nutshell

3.In 2014...oil prices began falling in April. By January 2015, our finance minister was saying that whoever won in 2015 , there was going to be a recession ahead of time

4.Also, the security situation was bad as well. Boko Haram was bombing all over Northern Nigeria from 2012-14. By 2015 Jan, the Army had them on the run, but memories die hard.

5.GEJ's party could have still won if they had sorted out their crisis in some of the states in Nigeria, plus the party divisions that led to many members moving over to the opposition.

6.Quite frankly, despite our GDP growing, most Nigerians were not seeing the benefit.

Too bad Buhari and APC turned out to be a disappointment. Though the signs were there

1.Buhari promised to sell petrol at N40 ....which would have meant sustaining the subsidy system he earlier criticized as corrupt

2.Buhari also promised n1 to $1 WITHOUT any plan to get the country productive, other than a vague I will stabilize the oil price.

3.And once he took over, Nigeria continued spending billions on a subsidy regimen and price controls (rule of economics, one does not control the prices.....)

4.And the security issues...Boko Haram has been contained, but is not over yet, and other security issues like armed robbery and herdsmen issues got out of hand.

5.And the economy is there, still messed up.

The problem really is Nigerians don't vote based on ideas, they vote based on how they get 'dividends of democracy'. We live in a fantasy that we are rich and that there is enough money for sharing, and all we have to do is share it right...and everyone is happy. Poverty makes the matter worse.

And Buhari has been borrowing money to pay salaries, while not diversifying away from oil.(Not much change then)

The problem with Nigerian leaders is that we run our economy based on 'Let's sell X and Y and share the money' which is then used to import stuff. Meanwhile we don't control the price of X and Y, and what we import is higher than the value of what we export

So we run out of money, and then have to take loans.

Your party needs to come up with ideas on making Nigeria more productive. We can't go on like this.
Re: The Nigerian Economy (are Nigerians Stupid?) by Mbakuthegreat(op): 4:38pm On Apr 16, 2020
Nevertheless the economy grew under him and you can't tell me that the ordinary citizen didn't see a different when Jonathan was in office vs Buhari? Nigeria surpassed India as poverty capital during Buhari in 2018.

Thank you for a great answer, now under PMB would you say that the people see more benefit during his presidency than GEJ by the fact that he was elected twice?

Things have gotten worse....largely again because the economy is tanking thanks to low oil prices.

And, even though some people may hate me, if GEJ had won, things won't have gotten better.

The hard truth is that our economy is dependent on oil...and we don't produce enough of it to , even if assuming no one stole, sustain us.

And then the oil price is falling..and oil is our major earner.

Somehow we have to be more productive. But since this involves removing subsidies on fuel and electric power...which means higher food prices, the government won't even dare....despite the long term benefits.

What pushed the Economy high was simply investor confidence !!! Something Buharis poor leadership has eroded

Which investors? Even if there were investors, they left before Buhari came in.

Things wouldn't really have gone better? Isn't that a question based on competence, meaning that GEJ could have been more competent than PMB? If the economy started to fall then couldn't a competent leader then see the need to deversify the economy from just oil dependent? Also im thinking, from my views which are minimal, GEJ looked competent and didn't that give investors the confidence of Nigeria unlike now?

I hope Nigeria doesn't break.... We need Nigeria to become the super power of Africa and for that it needs to be as big ass possible with many Nigerian people. Nigeria need to take the role of Africas protector otherwise we are doomned and the only one capable of super power position will be DRC and that will be a long time since its too unstable now. And Nigeria breaking up will bring those parts in conflicts for years or decades before stability.

Who told you Nairaland is for Nigerians alone? Now lemme burst your brain, Iranians are on this forum & they post everyday.

Back to the Question.
Yes! Nigerians are the most stupid set of people in the world, including me. When I thought we were free from recycled leadership, we rather opted for the oldest & dumbest of them.

What makes us stupid is because its we who voted for the terrorist of a presidiot we have, especially we the Southwesterners. Despite our education & exposure, we voted for an old unrepentant fool.

No Apologies!

Sorry for being late.

The problem is, diversification means, for our leaders, we go back to agriculture or 'solid minerals', which are subject to the same problems with oil (fluctuating prices).

1.For GEJ, cocoa was the answer. Yes we increased cocoa production, but the cash we were earning wasn't enough.(Nowadays, Buhari does the same with rice...and the cash too isn't enough).

2.As for investment....polices like fuel subsidy don't give investors the confidence to come and invest in the oil sector. Another sector that needed investment too was the power sector. Yes.,GEJ privatised the power sector, but then placed the control of prices we paid for power in the hands of a government body, which has kept prices of power low by law, but has had the effect of crippling the new private power companies financially. The the low oil price is preventing payment of subsidies for power....

All in all, most Nigerian governments engage in price controls. This tends to drive away investors, and worsens matters.

In my opinion, sort out those two issues, and there would be more jobs, and better economic prosperity.

3.The thing I want for Nigeria is to allow the price of petrol to be set by the market, as well as the price of power. This means higher food prices short term, but long term, it means increased investment in both the petroleum and power sector...which could lead to more jobs, and economic development. That's what GEJ and funnily enough Buhari fail to do, because both of them don't want bread riots so to speak.

Very good answer and its obvious that you are educated in the economic side of market economy. I see the issue and i see that letting the market determine the price will benefit the economy, and even if the prices rise to high in the longrun the companies will have to adjust and lower their prices if they want more costumers. Is the private sector controled by local firms or foreigners? I'm thinking where are the local investors? And lastly wouldn't diverfication come from normal private citizens who invest in their country? Why arent more nigerians starting buisness in the cocoa, agriculture industry by themselves if there is money to be made instead of waiting for the government?
