The hypnic jerk is described differently by everyone, but commonly shared experiences say that it feels like falling. Oddly enough, its also been described as a demon choking you in your sleep.

Researchers think that a few external causes, like caffeine and tobacco, might increase how often the hypnic jerk happens to you. They recommend avoiding any caffeinated drinks if bedtime is only a few hours away.

It’s also been seen that medications like Adderall and Ritalin can have similar effects, and sleep deprivation has been seen to trigger the phenomena as well.

The hypnic jerk is most often seen when a person falls asleep rapidly, during, or after they’ve been in an exhaustive state. On rare occasions, when the body is really exhausted the brain will process stages of sleep too quickly, confusing itself into thinking that the body and its major systems are failing.

It responds by jolting you awake with a burst of chemicals, one that the brain might interpret, and then build a dream designed to wake you up, which is the basic premise behind the theory of the ‘hypnic jerk.’

When ever this happens to me,I usually experience serious migraine ,like my head is about to fall off.And then I begin to sneeze uncontrollably.

I usually don't go back to sleep when it happens to me.

It happens to me if I suddenly fall asleep while sitting, and it comes with a brief cough. But it doesn't happen if I'm lying down.

Wrong, it has nothing to do with death.

Its a translation between the sleep mode and consciousness. You ll be experiencing it often if you are not a heavy sleeper

You're right sir. I'm a light sleeper and I experience it sometimes.

Mine occur when I ever I try to sleep on a cushion and mostly when am having a siesta.

Your heart can't supply enough electricity like a defibrillator, The pace maker or SA node isn't powerful enough to put you in a state of electric shock.
A normal heart produces around 1 watt of electric current which is equivalent to 100 volts.
A defibrillator produces a stunning 200-600 volts.. possibly more.

So what you're saying is very wrong.
It has nothing to do with low blood pressure if not we wouldn't only be experiencing it when we're about to sleep.
We would experience it while awake too.
