Mass Sacking Of Civil Servants Loom, Can Nigeria Survive 2020 Without Oil ? by Gjrich(op): 5:46pm On Apr 21, 2020
It is no longer news, the black gold known as crude oil has fallen. The reign of over 100 years that changed the dynamics of power and global leadership came to an end on Monday when the United States oil plunged to an unprecedented fall of negative pricing. This means that buyers are being paid by the Seller to take the oil for free!

The Brent oil, used as a measuring template for Nigeria's oil is also on the decline and trading at a value less than the cost of production.

This current situation is very unpleasant for our beloved country Nigeria.

Our budget over the decades has been based on projected revenues from the sales of crude oil. With the trading price of crude oil, Nigeria may have nothing to fund the larger than life character it is used to.

To say Nigeria is broke will be sugarcoating the situation; we are wrecked!

In the next few weeks, the federal government will no longer be able to meet up with its financial demands and State Governors who dole caps and kaftan to Abuja to share the national cake will no longer be able to do same. The free lunch is over!

But beyond the doom and clouded atmosphere, there are solutions to our current problem. But for these to be implemented, it takes huge sacrifice, fasting from the luxury lifestyle and ingenuity.

1. Mass sack across civil and public services

Presently Nigeria employs over 100,000 at various Federal Ministries, Agencies and Parastatals. This is excluding political appointees and aides who are sub-appointed to follow them around as Personal Assistant, Special Assistant, Special Adviser amongst other nomenclature their bear.

Most of the duties being undertaking by these individuals can be automated and while the rest are mere duplications. Software and computer programs do not collect salaries and definitely, they don't collect "envelopes" to pass files to the supervisor or Boss.

Political appointees and aides also need to go. We must make the seat of power less lucrative for people. Ministries should be supervised by Secretaries while Governor's convoy should be limited to three: his car, a spare car and one for security.

2. Focus on solid minerals

For 62 years, Nigeria has relied on the proceed from crude oil to run the country; this resource is generated from the South-South region of the country. However, while the focus is on oil, Nigeria has in its possession abundance of solid minerals such as gold, Iron Ore, Zinc and even Bitumen in other regions of the country.

Instead of exploring that sector, it has been neglected for powerful individuals and their cronies who continue to explore these resources with little or no remittance to the government. This must stop!

The proceeds from the natural resources must as a matter of necessity be declared and made available like oil.

It is also high time States are discouraged from coming to the centre to get bread.

State Governors must start generating enough revenue to meet up with their financial needs or merge with other States to survive. What you plant should be what you will eat.

Finally, technology and innovation is a vital part of any development. It is also a source of high revenue for countries that invest in it. Nigeria must empower our innovators to start developing technologies and solutions that can be sold across the world for forex.

Illegal mining is definitely an issue. Nigeria needs to bey tougher on it like Ghana. The sector has potential but multinationals aren't too interested yet.

The proceeds of mining is known and accounted for. You cam read the reports at NEITI if you're interested in the sector. It's no different from oil.
