FACT CHECK; IS THE SHARP INCREASE OF CORONAVIRUS CASES IN NIGERIA TRUE OR FALSE?

The threat of a global pandemic is rising as the new coronavirus rapidly spreads across many states in Nigeria.

The sharp increase in the number of Coronavirus cases in Nigeria in the recent week with a total of Of 981 cases as at April 23rd has pushed some Nigerians in to believing the figure may have been manipulated by NCDC. Here are the fact check by Ebonyitvnews

Verification

Nigerian authorities are in search of 4,370 “people of interest” in connection with the deadly coronavirus.

Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture who is also a member of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, spoke at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday March 26, 2020, while giving an update of government efforts to curb the pandemic.

He said the nation is on the verge of entering a new phase of the virus, which is community spread.

He told journalists that government faced difficulties tracing the 4,370 suspects, who may have come into the country through the airports, but who gave false telephone numbers and addresses.

“Some Nigerians who flew into the country from overseas filled wrong addresses and phone numbers in their forms, making it difficult to trace them when the need arises”, Mohammed said..

“We urge those who have had contact with suspected cases to immediately report to the authorities.

He warned that failure to do so can make Nigeria record exponential cases in the days ahead.

Coronavirus Spread Twice as Fast as Earlier Thought

Each person infected early in the epidemic in Wuhan probably passed the virus to an average of 5.7 other people, according to a mathematical analysis from Los Alamos National Laboratory. That’s more than twice what the World Health Organization and other public health authorities reported in February.

Abba Kyria Died of Coronavirus

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari's chief of staff  Abba Kyria  died a week ago after contracting the novel coronavirus.

Verdicts

The rapid spread of COVID-19 in Nigeria is not false but true. The 4,370 suspects has not fully being identified. They are living among the populace and if any of them were to be a carrier, then they keep spreading the disease thereby increasing the number of index cases.

Whether you believe the  rapid spread of coronavirus in Nigeria is true or false, you must  first be very careful and apply all NCDC precautionary measures. Coronavirus is not a respecter of anyone, if you careless yourself you will be infected.

May God save his children from this deadly disease. The Federal government and state government are not ready to curb this pandemic at all. Social distancing is only enforced in the south. Up north, they still hold jumaat service, burial, football matches etc. Here in the south, traders are using the opportunity to increase prices of commodities for no reason. Oh I pity my dear country. When coronavirus hits hard, even the money the politicians and dubious traders have amased can't save them.
