There is another school of thought that says Anambra is named after the Anam people of Anambra West LGA. The Anam people are also found in Delta state, they founded Okpanam near Asaba. |

For Kaduna state I dont agree because Gbagyi were the first settlers in the major parts of the city. It is a Gbagyi word not hausa word? Kada in hausa is one crocodile while many are called kadodi. The people just claimed the word. |

for akwa ibom. op you are not correct. Let me explain akwa means: almighty, mighty, great, big, etc ibom is a name of a god in ibibio, he is the greatest of all gods, people believe he's the god of heavens and earth. so akwa ibom means Almighty God. not what you are saying, akwa ibom dont even have a river like that... qua iboe church is just a coincidence |

Akwa Ibom is not named after the Qua iboe river. I don't know why I keep hearing this from some persons. Akwa Ibom means Great Ibom. Ibom is the ancestral home of the ibibios. It can also be interpreted in full as Akwa Abasi Ibom state" meaning "The state of the Great God of the Ibibios or the state of the almighty God". In other words "God's own state". "Qua Iboe" is the English corruption of the word "Akwa obio" which mean a large town. Akwa Obio is a coastal community in Akwa Ibom state. Qua Iboe or kwa Iboe was used by the British colonialists and early missionaries to describe the area during the precolonial era maybe because of the difficulty they end encountered in pronouncing the word "Akwa Obio" The Qua Iboe river which is a tributary of the Atlantic and a distributary of the Cross river is named after the coinage "Qua Iboe". Qua Iboe Church which is popular in Akwa Ibom state was named after the same community by the missionaries. |

[quote author=olamikunle213 post=88860892]I understand the fact that some of us knows all these but let's try and educate some people that have no idea how these state names were formed. ![]() 1. Abia Abia is an acronym from the four main groups of people in the state as at the time it was formed in 1991: Aba Bende Isuikwuato Afikpo. 2. Adamawa Adamawa was named after a warrior, Modibbo Adama Bin Ardo Hassan, that conquered the region in the beginning of the 19th century. 3. Akwa-Ibom Akwa Ibom is named after the Qua Iboe (or Kwa Iboe) River. /[quote]So Akwa Ibom people are semi IBO |
