Boko Haram has created an economy based on careful control of the international trade on smoked fish as well as red pepper in Lake Chad. But they make big breaks as often as they overrun towns and military bases to stock their weapons, supplies and, of course, abduct for ransom.

Among the major economic activities disrupted by the insurgency in Lake Chad were commercial fishing and farming of red pepper. These were major trading products upon which the local economy of a vast array of communities in the Lake Chad Basin, particularly Borno state in Nigeria, was dependent.

But in 2015 the insurgents took strategic steps to control and re-order trade in both products. They encouraged local fishing among the communities by the banks of the lake and created a new regime of levies and secure routes for fish traders to reach designated markets.

According to the World Food Programme, before the Boko Haram crisis, the combined fish and red pepper trades contributed 28 billion CFA Francs (48 million dollars) to the Nigerien economy, with most of this coming from exports to Nigeria. The red pepper or red gold farming and trade is estimated to employ over 300,000 people.

A fight against boko haram is a fight against the Muslim north and northern government. Boko Haram is their own Oduduwa.

Captured! Who told you they were captured? Surrender has now turned to captured. And until you give me the link to the video where Buhari says a fight against BH is a fight against north, you can flush your fake news down your kitchen sink.

This problem is directly related to the arm banning fishing. If they simply regulated it the terrorist would have defacto monopoly. ISWAP were quite clever in their tax policy. They were fair and didnt do any double taxation. Assuming they have 500 people paying both taxes for 365 days that's N270m million revenue.

In ISWAP-controlled areas, fishermen, fish dealers and cattle rearers are all expected to pay taxes. Fish dealers pay an average of N1 000 (US$2.8 ) for every carton of fish leaving the island daily. [b]Individual fishermen using canoes each pay N5 000 (US$13.8 ) for one-time fishing permits.

Cattle rearers pay according to the number of cows they have. Sources familiar with the tax system on the islands say there is no multiple taxation, which affects legitimate businesses in Nigeria. Cattle rearers don't worry about their cattle being rustled, and there is little to no harassment or abuse of civilians by ISWAP fighters.

Like someone asked above, how many tonnes of smoked fish would they have sold to have sustained them this long against armies of three countries?

Let's do some basic math. ISS reports they charge fish dealers N1000 and individual fisher men N5000. Assuming they have 500 people paying both taxes for 365 days that's N270m million revenue. This doesn't include other taxes on cattle and kidnapping ransoms.

This is a useless thread.

What we want to hear is that Nigerian Army has decimated Boko Haram, killed 1,000 of them, captured their leader, captured their armoury.

Tired of propaganda.

You should take the time to think about this issue rationally. This report isn't propaganda like you're erroneously claiming. It's already been confirmed by multiple parties. The Chadian soldiers you want Nigeria to emulate are stopping these activities in the territory. Starving the enemy of resources makes them easier to eliminate.

While the Chadians are making efforts to put a stop to this dark window, at least in their territories, it is business as usual in the Niger and Nigerian territories around the Lake Chad basin, sources said.
