At least 52 lawyers, including six with the ranks of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) have been enlisted to save the jobs of the Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri and his Deputy, Lawrence Ewrujakpor, at the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja.

The lawyers and SANS hired by Diri, Ewrujakpor, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were reportedly ready to begin legal fireworks in a case filed by the Governorship Candidate of the Liberation Movement (LM), Vijah Opuamah.

Opuamah’s case scheduled for pre-hearing on Monday commenced like a joke immediately the Supreme Court declared Diri the winner of the last year’s governorship election following the disqualification of the Governor-elect, Chief David Lyon.

The matter packaged by three junior lawyers, Ebikebuna Aluzu, Pius Danba and Ebi Robert, was dismissed initially by most PDP leaders as dead on arrival, until careful scrutiny of the processes filed by the lawyers suggested otherwise.

Opuama is seeking the disqualification of Ewrujakpor and the cancellation of the November 16, 2019 governorship election.

He wants the court to order a fresh election in Bayelsa alleging that the poll conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) failed to comply with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

Opuama, in the petition alleged that Ewrujakpor, the 4th respondent, submitted an affidavit to INEC, the 1st respondent, that contained false information.

[b]Ahead of the pre-hearing of the petition filed by the governorship candidate of Liberation Movement (LM), Vijah Eldred Opuama, against Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), pressure is being mounted on the plaintiff to drop his petition.

Opuama had dragged Diri, his deputy, Lawrence Ehwrudjakpo, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) before the Bayelsa Elections Petitions Tribunal sitting in Abuja, seeking the disqualification of Ehwrudjakpo and calling for a fresh governorship election.

Checks indicate that several emissaries from the PDP have been sent to Opuama appealing to him to drop the petition in exchange for an undisclosed sum of money and the promise of cabinet positions.

The emissaries are said to have met with Opuama and his close political associates pleading with him in the interest of the state and the Ijaw nation to withdraw the petition and save the state from avoidable distractions.

Chairmen of two political parties in the state who know Opuama personally are also said to have spoken to him, advising the LM candidate to withdraw his petition and cooperate with the PDP administration to form a government of unity in the interest of Bayelsans.

Opuama has, however, reportedly rebuffed all attempts to persuade him to withdraw his petition, purportedly saying that his petition was filed in the interest of Bayelsa State.

The LM governorship candidate, who recently raised alarm over threats to his life, said he is ready to pursue his petition up to the Supreme Court in order to get justice.

Opuama had hinged his petition on arguments that, as of the time of the governorship election, Ehwrudjakpo was not qualified to contest as he allegedly provided false information to the electoral commission to aid his qualification.

In his statement of facts before the Tribunal, the Opuama argued:

“The 4th Respondent was not qualified to contest the election in that he submitted an affidavit containing false information to the 1st Respondent. The 4th Respondent’s Degree certificate dated 3rd February 1998 purportedly issued by Rivers State University of Science and Technology and the 4th Respondent’s certificate of exemption from National Youth Service Corps purportedly issued on 2nd February 1998 are inconsistent with one another other and contradictory to one another.

“I know that by virtue of National Youth Service Corps Act, certificate of exemption from National Youth Service under the Act is only issued to persons who have successfully graduated from the University and have their degree certificate as approved by the University’s Senate.”

Ehwrudjakpo has since though his counsel Mr Clement Kekemeke in a press conference dismissed the allegation of presenting false information to the INEC for the Bayelsa governorship election.

I am someone who has interest in bayelsa politics, since Lyon was f*cked up I have lost all interest. I am aware of this case but didn't know it will be coming up soon, it might be postponed because of the pandemic. Last night I had a dream about this case ( No jokes and it came out against diri). I have never had such dream relating to politics.

After what happened in Imo and knowing our Nigeria legal system, I don't think Diri will be removed. A legal abracadabra will be unearthed.

The Courts have ruled in an earlier case that even if you see any discrepancy with the person's paper, INEC have no right to disqualify same person.

It recently happened to Yahaya Bello on his disqualification saga but INEC couldn't do same. Go to the Courts and prove it.

However, INEC has said they will improve with how they keep the information of candidates. Before now, they don't make it public but that will change with the upcoming Edo and Ondo elections.

For the first time, INEC will post all information about the candidate(s) with respect to their education, age, etc. on the noticeboards situated at their State Secretariats.

Nonetheless, they still don't have the powers to disqualify.

It will go the way all other cases against Douye Diri & Lawrence went, thrown to the waste bag. SenatorDave1 you go commit suicide o!

You better embrace him. For the first time in bayelsa state I'm seeing a governor who is ready to work. Put bitterness aside, put political affiliations aside and embrace him.

You are right,pdp can miraculously win since the appellants are using rookie lawyers.
The bolded has happened in Adamawa and bauchi this election cycle to apc candidates.
