Kano To Rely On ‘Verbal’ Autopsy For Mysterious Deaths by Nobody: 9:56am On Apr 27, 2020
The Kano State Covid-19 response team says it will rely on ‘verbal methods’ while probing the cause of death of the hundreds of people that have died mysteriously in the state in the last one week.

The Coordinator, Technical Response Team, Covid-19, Dr. Tijani Hussaini, said this on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme on Monday.

He said Kano, being a predominantly Muslim state, usually buries its dead almost immediately which, therefore, makes it nearly impossible to determine the cause of death of a person.

“In medical practice, there is what you call verbal autopsy. What we are doing is going back in history to see if we can make connections.

What we are doing is verbal autopsy to ensure that we get to the root of this seemingly increasing death rate in Kano.

“Investigations will inform decision making and the Kano State Government will take it seriously,” Hussaini said.

He said the state government also received reports from social media about the mysterious deaths but the state lacked records of normal death rates in the state and so there was no baseline with which to compare the recent deaths.

The coordinator added, “We have instituted several measures to ensure that we get to the bottom of this. As I speak to you, our data collectors are out in the field trying to find out, get data on the symptoms that led to the death of these people.

“Remember that Kano is a traditional Muslim place and usually autopsies are not conducted. We do not have burial registers and so it is difficult to say categorically that there is an increase in the number of deaths.”

The coordinator said the probe was being conducted in conjunction with the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control and other partners.

“You hardly find families taking their dead for autopsy even when they die in hospitals and this is the traditional practice in Kano and many other states in northern Nigeria. Remember that Islamic rites demand that you bury your dead as early as possible.

“And a lot of these deaths do not occur in facilities or hospitals,” he said.

The coordinator said Kano State has over 60 graveyards apart from the small graveyards used by little communities.

Hussaini added, “Kano State has over 60 graveyards. When I say graveyards, I mean graveyards and this excludes the small graveyards. So, looking at the number of graveyards in Kano, it means a large population must have access to bury their dead.”

Nigeria politicians are very selfish, they have zero interest in the masses, they just want to line their pocket. We all know the mysterous disease is Covid 19, my question is why did they close down the NCDC office in Kano, why is Ganduje hell bent on killing his people over 15 billion naira.

The North will always hide under religion to cover it's inadequacies.
For years they refused to ban almajiri until Coro show face and they realised that the almajiris who move from community to community on foot can spread the virus easily to the elders while possibly remaining immune to the symptoms because of their young age.

Before the next election they will relax the ban on almajiri using some verses from the Koran as their thumbprints will be needed on the ballot papers.

How long does an autopsy result take to come out?

An autopsy is Haram in Islam.

It is not permissible to perform an autopsy on the body of a dead Muslim for the sake of education and other purposes.

It is only permissible if the life of another depends on it—even if it is sometime in the future. They should take random sampling for this sake to check the cause of death.

If they value their religion more than their lives, then they should be allow to die peacefully.

If they government have the power to deny you access to your loved ones who died of Ebola or Wuhan Virus, there's nothing stopping them from using the same power to seize one of the copse for autopsy.

If it's going to be based on eye witness account it means they're only going to be inferring the possible cause of death

Exactly. Islam forbids autopsy, even if the lives of the entire state are in danger, no autopsy. Thats their business anyway, they should just shut down all borders to the south. they will rather keep dying than do the needful

I won’t RULE OUT other underlying complications from other health conditions
Like hypertension, diabetes, meningitis acute malaria and covid 19...but that would be through thorough differential diagnosis after the subject is tested...but the problem here is that the patients are being buried before 24hours ..Verbal autopsy being carried out by the Kano state government doesn’t seem reliable
Kano had shut down private hospitals and diagnostic centers over the high mortality rate due to covid 19 and to avoid cross infection .this surely would limit people's access to clinics for other ailments and patient mostly scheduled for follow up cases and possible admission would only get the illness deteriorate since they can’t access healthcare services..
....LETS PRAY FOR KANO

Verbal Autopsy?

These Northern states reeks utmost ignorance from the depth of mediocrity. Religious/traditional sanctimonious beliefs over a pandemic ravaging the whole state ?

Somehow, I would love to see how the events unfold as regards the verbal autopsy, but in eventuality, even the state governor might not live to see the root cause by the time Covid19 enters the state House.

It really beats my imagination seeing how the so called constituted authorities in Kano degrade so low to this kind of verbal utterance. I really hope by the end of the day, cause of death won’t be Covid19.
