The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has approved the implementation of the Steve Oransaye Committee report on the rationalisation of government agencies.

The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, disclosed this while appearing on a Channels TV programme, Politics Today.

The Presidential Committee on the Rationalisation and Restructuring of Federal Government Parastatals, Commissions and Agencies, now commonly referred to as the Oronsaye Committee, was set up by the Goodluck Jonathan administration.

The committee, inaugurated in August 2011, submitted its report the following year, recommending the merger, conversion and scrapping of many agencies.

While describing the cost of governance in Nigeria as one of the highest in the world, the committee had recommended a reduction in the number of statutory agencies from 263 to 161.

God bless Goodluck Jonathan. He had the vision, he knows how to take good advice from his appointees and formulate good policies.

That Steve Orosanya report hit the nail on the head.

We are still awaiting the PIB and the big one, the 2014 Confab report implementation. And to be honest with you all, we don't have a choice than to implement the Confab report.

I must confess that the implementation of the Oronsaye Report is commendable. But it is not enough. The President should speedily direct the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission to reduce the salaries of all political office holders and appointees by 60%.

The country cannot continue to support an already overburdened recurrent expenditure at the expense of the masses, especially now that oil is useless.

Governance is a continuos process. All those posters praising Pres Jonathan, report was submitted in 2012, if it was the proper time, the recommendations contained therein would have been implemented.

The truth is, many statutory agencies overlap in their duties (e.g FRSC & VIO )hence, mergers or outright scraping will save taxpayers money.

There is also the believe that often times, Agencies are created to 'settle bois'. With oil price hitting the lowest and no oil money to play around with, it is time to cut down on all excesses.
