South Africa began to gradually ease its strict coronavirus lockdown on Friday, allowing some industries to reopen after five weeks of restrictions that plunged its struggling economy deeper into turmoil.

Africa’s most industrialised nation was already teetering with low growth and high debts when the lockdown kicked in on March 27.

On Wednesday S&P downgraded the country’s credit rating further to junk.

“The poor and the working class are having to bear the burden of a global pandemic that has caused severe economic and social disruption,” President Cyril Ramaphosa said in a televised May Day speech, adding that pre-existing challenges had been “exacerbated by the pandemic”.

“As we begin the process of easing the lockdown and many people start returning to work, we must remain vigilant and careful,” Ramaphosa cautioned.

“The road ahead will be long and hard, and we will make mistakes.”

With 5,647 confirmed cases and 103 fatalities, South Africa has the continent’s highest COVID-19 death toll.

But a mid-April government survey published on Friday showed that respondents were more concerned about a potential economic collapse than contracting coronavirus.

Many also feared the outbreak would trigger civil disorder in a country marred by social inequality and sporadic outbursts of xenophobic violence.

– ‘Very difficult battle’ –
“Our president … has got a very difficult battle with managing livelihoods and economic issues together with health issues,” Paul Kapelus, a development specialist cycling at a Johannesburg park, said in the early hours of the first day of the eased restrictions.

Around 1.5 million workers in selected industries will return to work in the next phase under strict health conditions, according to Trade and Industry Minister Ebrahim Patel.

Winter clothing, textile and packaging manufacturing were among the industries permitted to reopen factories from Friday.

Restaurants also opened only for takeaway deliveries but controversial bans on the sale of cigarettes and alcohol remained.

Social distancing and wearing masks in public and at workplaces will be mandatory.

There has never been a time as now when one should fully articulate the virtues of earn money online from the comfort of your home in foreign currency. Economic growth and development world over has taken a beating, workers are summarily laid off. Governments are opening up business in the face of the covid-19 threats. This is the time to move business concerns to e-commerce. I rest my case

Total lockdown will cause loss of job and food security
This leads to Undernutrition
Undernutrition is an immune suppression state
Then there is Vulnerability to diseases not just Corona virus but also malaria and other infections
More death occurs
The key note is
It is not about the number of cases but the number of mortalities because we all know that the majority of those infected by Covid-19 will recover

Go to Kano and tell them you won Coro.

We are opening up because we don't have a better choice. Both options are not pleasant.

I got a call from one multinational company i interviewed with 6 days before the commencement of the lockdown to resume work on April 6. I was later told that resumption date would be communicated to me after the pandemic issue is over as the company is working from home.
I pray with the latest development of job loss & cut in salary across most sector of the economy not to affect my resumption in Jesus name.
I pray for the mercy of God in my life and that although I'm a sinner, God should grant me favour and not let my joy be converted to sorrow & disappointment.
I pray this day and with the prayers of saints and well wishers that the work God started in my life will be completed with great success and that I'll testify.
I pray that history will not repeat itself in my life in Jesus name

Please pray for me. God bless you all

"Africa’s most industrialised nation"

Damn!

South Africa for it right. Got Independence at the right time.

Unlike our own mumu people. They were fighting for independence when they were suppose to be in the farm cultivating Cassava.

We got the Independence at a wrong time and became fvcking useless.

Its stated that only: "workers in selected industries will return to work in the next phase under strict health conditions"

"Winter clothing, textile and packaging manufacturing were among the industries permitted to reopen factories from Friday."

So this is not really a major lockdown change in South Africa.
