If I remember correctly, Nigeria has the fourth lowest pump price per gallon of petrol in the world after Venezuela, Iran and Kuwait that pay on average less than a dollar per gallon (or approximately 98 Naira per liter). But don't be deceived by the relatively low price at the surface. The price of petrol is low in Nigeria because it is subsidized by the feds at the high opportunity cost of non existent social infrastructure. Think of it this way. As we consume petrol in Nigeria, we are consuming potential expressways, bridges, flyovers, overpasses, trains, light rail, passenger buses and the repairs of existing infrastructure that is currently in a sorry state. The money used to subsidize petrol is what should have been used to provide this infrastructure. Isn't it ridiculous that we are consuming our lunch and dinner for breakfast? Taking a holistic view of things, petrol is extremely expensive in Nigeria. It is literally costing us our future! But then, even at the subsidized low price, petrol is still considered expensive because of the average low income in the country.

The Tragedy called Nigeria

Umar Ibrahim Aminu to Southern Nigerians:
Couldn't you guys stop this hatred for once? Couldn't you guys imbibe the spirit of oneness in Nigeria even for this pandemic period? Couldn't you guys see Nigeria as one?

Response;
Do you guys ever see Nigeria as one and all of us equal?
Is oneness reflected in the regime of Sai Buhari?
Is oneness reflected in the Constitution of 1999 that gives the North 19 states and 60% of the seats in the National Assembly and 65% of the resources of the South given to the North?
Is oneness reflected in the composition of the military, police, etc?

Is oneness reflected in the refusal of the North to rein in murderers in the name of religion?
Is oneness reflected in the refusal of Northern Nigeria to sit and agree on constitutional changes because they have an inordinate advantage in a fraudulent constitution?
Is oneness reflected in the North selling gold and other solid minerals they do not share with us?
You mentioned the "spirit of oneness during the Coronavirus period'', I laugh raucously at that! In fact, the Federal The government of Northern Nigeria had cleared all doubts about the fallacy of One Nigeria! The Northern Regime in Aso Rock
spent 90% of the palliatives on Northern Nigerians...5k monthly to indigent Northern Nigerians, 20k per family to them as
palliatives, 110 trucks of fresh grains from strategic reserves, and other goodies! Southern Nigeria gets nothing from the
Northern Regime! How does that reflect the spirit of oneness in Nigeria?
You even have the Southern VP quarantined, and silenced when he should be helping to govern. But Southern Nigeria is an inconvenient appendage of the Fulani Republic of Nigeria!
Show me the "oneness" in your people!
Give me an example of how Nigeria reflects the spirit of oneness and equity and I'd change my name to yours...permanently!
It is tragic that Nigeria was molded in the image and likeness of the Caliphate; the result is the hellhole simpletons validate periodically. It's bad enough that Nigeria is a country that shouldn't be, it's an insult for those that cause the inequalities, injustice, and disunity to ask us, victims, to imbibe the spirit of oneness. It's an insulting provocation! Nigeria, as constituted, is a tragedy!

I feel bad when someone is trying to make a point that Nigeria is good and that people should not migrate I mean common, it's good for someone to migrate it's even in the Bible. Anybody that still have or believe that there is still hope in this country should keep believing, Nigeria is a failed country there is no doubt about it we can all see it. If u have made up ur mind to travel out of this country pls do me I support 100% and don't let anybody pollute ur mind. just plan ahead and save towards it that's all, some people will come here and be saying Nigeria is good because they re living fine and they have money to buy whatever they want, it's not everybody that has that opportunity. Op pls don't let anybody pollute ur mind Abeg, just stay focus and achieve ur dreams, there is a huge difference between Nigeria and the western world.

You mentioned one thing that most do not account for, cost of living. It’s not as if you commute from Oju Elegba to Toronto to work. One has to factor in the high cost of living.

For me in the USA my federal income tax rate was 25% and my state income tax rate was 10%. So for every $100 I make I only take home $65 theoretically. Out of that same $65 I pay for medical insurance, dental insurance and other deductions so at best my take home is around $50 out of that $100

Good luck to all intending travelers but make sure you have the full picture.

I have 3 personal friends (native born Americans) that are waiting for all the Covid stuff to pass so they can migrate out of North America.

Bro but you are paying the tax for what you make use of on a monthly basis. At least, the government there use the tax money to make life comfortable for the masses.

I really don't see any good reason why people should be complaining about tax. If you don't pay tax, how will the government create the basic amenities you guys enjoy over there? The constant light, good roads, portable central water system and the lots.

What you should be concerned about is that the government is using the tax money judiciously.

A typical example is the $1200 that Dollars Trump gave out as palliative to alleviate the stress of this lockdown on their citizens. I hope you heard about that. If people don't pay tax, where do you think he would have gotten that huge amount of money to pay everyone?

In essence, let's always not complain about tax. Look at the huge benefit you get from the tax money you pay which is the availability of constant basic amenities. They don't take your light, you get clean water running in your house 24hrs. Unlike we that pay light bill here in Nigeria and won't see light for 2 weeks.

You are definitely paying for what you are enjoying and making use of. And I don't think they will tax anyone beyond his or her capacity. That's why everyone don't pay same amount for tax. They tax you according to your income, that is why there is no much discrepancy between the rich and the poor over there.

I really feel pity for people who still believe in this country. People who still have hope that Nigeria will get better someday. It is Cristal clear that they are just lying to themselves and living in self delusion. A country that generates 3500 megawatt of power in 2020, with a population of 200million, a country with no pipe Borne water infrastructure as all of them built by the military regimes has rusted and disappeared. A country with terrorism and kidnapping, a country with no single standard medical facility of global standard (if there is, then why do our leaders go to hospital abroad? ). How do we expect such a country to be better even in the next 50years? n

See this one o. I am the op in question and yes I am 30 years old, and yes I do know the realities of life probably more than you. You see, I never said to make it in an instant, you are just the one mouthing it, and you think I don't know the cost of travel? Maybe you are highly mistaken o as I have travelled abroad severally, so I know all the expenditure and peculiarities involved. Again, stop presuming, I am certainly not depressed or anything, to the contrary, I am in the Nigerian sense living very good, I have a very good paying job, I have my own manageable ride etc but you see, I am not delusional. I can clearly with my own two eyes see that this country is disgusting and disfunctional. You talked about using 5million to setup solar power in my house instead of travelling with it, what then is the use of the government if I will have to provide electricity by myself? Also you thinking as a typical Nigerian will conveniently not think of the rest of the people. If I am able to provide electricity for myself, what about the remaining citizens of this country? you see where the Nigerian mentality is so messed up right? And if you were exposed enough, you will realize that it's not only about electricity. What about health? should I also build a hospital for myself too? what about quality education? what about security? water supply? Maybe I should sink my own borehole right? if I will have to do all these by myself, what then is the benefits of being a Nigerian? and again, if I can afford to provide all these to myself, what about more than 90% of Nigerians that can't afford such? I will live you with this, it's not a matter of how much you will spend to immigrate, or whatever, it's about dignity of life, future prospects for your children, comfort of life and so many more. Nigeria has failed it's citizens woefully

Did you just say the bolded?
See, the mistake people like you make is to think we as Nigerians should all value the same thing. Nigeria was not designed to make collective progress because we don't appreciate it as a people, it is designed for individual progress. So for your own good think about yourself and yourself alone, don't bother about others, the general society. Believe me, it is all man for himself so you need to start thinking selfishly and forget about others.

Secondly, Nigeria did not fail her citizens. Believe me, they way Nigeria is today, far majority of the citizens love it that way. The rich love Nigeria like mad and would even frustrate any effort to make it better for everyone. If everybody has 24/7 light for instance, how would the rich oppress others with their inverters and solar systems that costs millions of naira? If all those things you are talking about is available to all, what then will separate the rich from the poor? How would the rich do long throat to the poor? The gap will be close. Let us not forget that the rich needs a Nigeria like this to maintain their 'chairmanship' grin over others. If Nigeria becomes better for all and this wide gap reduces, their 'chairmanship' goes down. Nigeria is built to have a form of 'social distancing' grin between classes of people

What of the poor? When you see them complaining and cursing their leaders, it is not because they want Nigeria to have a working system or as developed or beautiful like Dubai or Germany, it is because they do not have the opportunity to acquire wealth, show off and oppress others. Once they cross over and become rich, Nigeria will become the best thing after slice bread. Those things they complain about will no longer matter to them.

The reality is that you need to pursue your own personal happiness alone. Don't think about the larger society, they don't want it. If you are tired, stop complaining, find a way to legally migrate abroad, Nigerian borders are still open grin. If you can't, just make yourself happy anyhow

I got fade up with the country and i relocated with my family. For me, the next time i will live in Nigeria permanently will be decades from now when i retire. I will come back to Nigeria to love Nigeria and become the most patriotic Nigerian alive grin. In fact, i will paint my house and car green white green and dedicate my online presence to loving Nigeria with all my heart. For now, let me enjoy what the developed world has to offer first grin. There is nothing as sweet as seeing it all, enjoying it all and then coming back to be in the position to deceive others. It is not being selfish, it is being a Nigerian grin. [b] I slightly disagree with you on this

I have no choice but to agree with you on this. it is highly unfortunate but it's true that majority of the citizens seem not to want the change. I think it is due to the long period of suffering that has conditioned people's minds to actually love their oppressors and the condition they are in. I think it's called institutionalization. the rich and elite also deliberately want Nigeria to remain like that because that is the only way they can continue to feel important by flaunting and oppressing everyone else with their ill gotten wealth.

This is also very correct. I have come to realize that majority of the people who insult politicians do it not because they want development, but because they also want a taste of the national cake. They actually don't mind living in poverty and suffering, as long as they regularly get "something", then they are ok. the concept of urban renewal, the need for 24hr power supply as the bedrock of development, social security, true freedom etc just doesn't register in their brains. this is a sad reality of this country.

The reality is that you need to pursue your own personal happiness alone. Don't think about the larger society, they don't want it. If you are tired, stop complaining, find a way to legally migrate abroad, Nigerian borders are still open grin. If you can't, just make yourself happy to anyhow

I agree with you on this too. the larger society really doesn't seem to want change, if not everyone would have revolted and forcefully make change happen. Infact, I think I might just copy this your way, quietly find my way out of this mess of a country and enjoy the best of both worlds.

Don't think because you have generator and borehole and security guard in your house that means you are enjoying, you are lying to yourself

Ah!...Don't assume that na.

Maybe Mizwisdom might be the daughter or wife one of those corrupt Politicians or people in government. cheesy

Money cannot buy happiness, but the lack of it in Nigeria almost certainly precludes a citizen from achieving anything close to it. By my own conservative estimates, I would need to spend about 35 - 50 million Naira a year in Nigeria to live at the same middle class standard I am living today, considering that I will need to provide everything for myself and my family. This will satisfy our day to day needs, but how about when I retire? Add average annual savings/ stock market investments of 10 million Naira to that at conservative estimates. That takes care of immediate family, but what about extended family? What percentage of Nigeria's population can come close to earning these staggering amounts legally?
By the grace of God, I am very comfortable financially, but still worry about extended family back in Nigeria. One cannot be entirely happy with the situation in Nigeria when one sees all the economic and social injustice. Anyone that has the opportunity to migrate should do so, but let's be honest, less than 1% of the population will do so successfully so this cannot be the ultimate solution.

I am still hopeful for Nigeria because our people have not yet done what is necessary to break the yoke. I believe there is still a chance that it will happen someday. Look into the history of many developed nations and see how they successfully broke away from oppressive monarchies. Nigeria has not even come close, except for Boko Haram that seems to have the template figured out. Why is the government finding it difficult to defeat them? Because they have the support of the people and it is the people that are fighting. Wrong motives, wrong objectives but right template.

I rest my case.

I’ve not read any comment here that says people should not migrate.

To migrate or not isn’t a community decision.

Embassies liter Lagos and Abuja cool

Very true, but as I mentioned, it has been an artificial unsustainable subsidized price. Subsidy is eliminated today because of the current low price of crude which as we all know will not last long. Crude oil prices have ranged from less than zero to $20 per barrel in the last couple months due to the impacts of Covid-19 and Saudi-Russia price war, but are on the rise again and will soon exceed the threshold at which Nigeria needs to either re-introduce subsidies or let the price exceed the benchmark average 145 Naira per liter. We import pretty much all of the gasoline we use in the country, but have sold at less than the cost price, even excluding freight just to maintain political stability. Lets see if the government has the cajones to float the price of gasoline.

Just today I was making some random searches online as to why we in Nigeria seem so docile in the face of overwhelming oppression by our leaders, then I came across the history of the french revolution, and how it impacted them so much as to input the right to revolt in their constitution. They stormed the Bastille, killed off their monarchs and returned power to the people.

Most American states also have it in their constitutions the right of the people to revolt and change government, even the right to bear arms and use it to protect oneself from government tyranny. Thomas Jefferson also said when the government becomes afraid of the people you have freedom, but when the people become afraid of government you have tyranny.

With all these, it seems to me that Nigerians will come to a point where they cannot continue to take the oppression of leaders, then they will use their firm and inalienable right of revolt to force change in this country. The whole armed forces of this country including police, army ,navy etc used in controlling and enforcing inhumane laws, fraudulent financial crimes etc are not even up to a million. Yet we have 200million citizens in this country just sitting and watching a handful of people enjoying it all alone while you rest suffer on. People will come to that realization. Hopefully soon

That soon can be 200 years from now. What you explained happen when people are united not in its current state. Nigerians are timid - Rotimi Amaechi (https://allafrica.com/stories/201304080378.html).
