A mobile gaming addict was found dead inside his apartment with signs he was electrocuted while charging his phone and playing at the same time.

Delivery company employee, Tinnakorn Rattanauppaphan, 32, had the smartphone plugged in to an extension cable on his bed while using it at his rented room in Nan, northern Thailand.

His friends found him lying still on the mattress below a window. When they tried to wake him he was unresponsive so they contacted the police.

Officers believe Tinnakorn had been dead for two days.

Friend said: 'We started to worry after he had been absent from work for a couple days, which was unusual for him.'

They suspect that he was electrocuted to death as they found burn wounds on both of his swollen hands that were touching the phone and charger cable.

The police sent the body for a post-mortem examination and labelled the death as an accident in their initial report.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Samran Wongchaiya said: 'Our initial investigations show that there was no trace of fighting or anything that suggests suspicious activity.

'So we believe that he was electrocuted to death as he had signs of electrocution and the cause is also consistent with the testimonies of his friends and family that he spent a lot of time playing mobile games online.'

What's with phone charging and electrocution these days?! First it was our own video vixen, Kodak, now it's a Thai.

Chargers are supposed to step down DC voltage of 240V to 5V, but it seems these faulty chargers are stepping down the voltage insignificantly to around 110V, high enough to cause an electric shock and burns. Plus, the metallic phone case may also contribute to the shock.

We shouldn't neglect safety advice/precautions, not to ever use high or low tech phones while charging.

RIP to the departed!

"Battery full. Unplug from Charger"

A simple instruction neglected by many.

To whom it may concern; Receiving calls or playing with your mobile device while it's still charging is disastrous...

Do not try this again.

If he's electrocuted, I believe his body will still carry electric charges until found. Anything short of that is natural death or murder but I believe prejudice has made these people assume whatever they think killed him

2days without being swollen..
OR maybe the steady shock help preserve the body.

Its unfortunate though...

Phone makers should please go back to using plastics

Phone chargers step down AC voltage of 240V (depending on the country) to DC voltage of 5V.

Most transformerless design employed in phone chargers nowadays does not completely isolate the mains (240V) from the output (5V) because one of the output terminals is always referenced to one of the mains terminal, which is usually the neutral line but can be accidentally reversed when plugging.

In electronics design, the common terminal is called the ground so one of the output terminal is referenced to the ground. In this case, we make use of the neutral line. But Unfortunately most chargers have just two legs that is plugged to the mains supply. What this means is that if the plug is reversed, The reference point will change and part of the output will be the LIVE line and this can be very lethal if you mistakenly touch the mouth of your charger or any other exposed part.

Engineers have found a way of eliminating this reversal by making use of three terminals.. So the next time you want to get a charger, make sure you get the ones with three terminals, they are the safest. With this type, you can only plug it in one direction..... Don't say it is too big, value your life.

Or you can just follow these general safety tips regardless of the type of charger you are using;

1. Don't use your phone while charging.

2. Never touch the tip of the charger once plugged in

3. Make sure no wire is exposed along the length of the cable.

Below is an example of the 3 terminal chargers I'm talked about.

I don't think so. A surge in the electricity must av been responsible for the electrocution and the power may av since stabilize..

Great info, but I almost died once from an electrical shock using a three terminal charger. I unplugged my phone immediately and it sent my flying, charger blew up. Does that mean whenever there's electric surge, one is at risk all the same?

Once my phone is 70-85 percent and I want to sleep, I will unplug my charger and switch off the socket when I feel like sleeping , when playing high end game phone get hot but some people don't notice and think it's their pain that is getting warm not knowing its the IC,
The only thing I wish to stop is not watching movies when charging, although it's once in a while,
RIP to those that died while pressing phone wink

I'm finding it hard to comprehend you saying that chargers with three terminals are the safest.

Lots of electrical devices have plugs and chargers that come with just two terminals, are you saying the manufacturers don't know what they were doing?
