If I don't know anything from the district he represents, I know when he was about to be lynched for trying to commission one borehole twice. He n his entourage took off like the wind n till date no one can tell how he disappeared but sadly he wasn't as lucky in Germany. Rgade: |

Ike Ekweremadu will always remain a shining light. It's quite a shame that a group of touts took it upon themselves to destroy his image. Ekweremadu going forward must begin to think Igbo first. Ethnic patriotism is what Nigeria understands. |

I just noticed that Ekweremadu was a local government chairman in 1997 at age 33. I have also noticed a similar trend with a lot of other Nigerian politicians like Mamora, Amaechi, Tinubu, etc. Babatunde Fashola for instance was COS to Tinubu at 35. A lot of us patriotic young people may curse and criticize politicians all we want, but if we don't get involved in governance, we might never get a chance to fix things. Ranting and cursing online might give you an illusion of contributing to the country's betterment, but it's only gonna send you down a hate spiral that locks you in to either of two (2) evil camps (i.e. APC or PDP), and destroy your objective reasoning. My personal opinion (right or wrong) is that any Nigerian over 30 who is not a member of a viable political party really should not be criticizing the government, cos you are not putting in your bit to help fix Nigeria. Fixing Nigeria would not happen overnight; it's a multi-decade effort, which requires you to get in early and start contributing as soon as possible. You don't have to start at the very top, cos quite frankly, very few of us would ever see a sitting president (Buhari et al) in our lifetimes, talk less of having an audience with them to fix a lot of the rot in Nigeria . . . but you see that your ward & local government - you can do a lot. As little as organizing with others who share the same political beliefs and/or platforms with you to help push through even slight policies like measuring the effectiveness of learning at just one small local school, or helping to grow farmers' cooperatives to boost the local economics of farming could make a huge difference at your own individual level to fixing Nigeria. Think about it: you can't fix the ASUU problem or change the FG's budget allocation to education, but you can improve education outcomes at your local primary school. And if that is all you can do in your lifetime, it sure beats cursing politicians and pulling your hair at something that happens at the national level that you cannot fix or even touch with a long pole. For most of us, our quality of life would to a healthy extent be largely affected at our local everyday level (i.e. local cooperatives to boost productivity, primary healthcare centres, and education to boost health, tracking learning effectiveness at small local primary schools to improve education outcomes). Lastly, for those who are truly passionate about the lots of their people (Nigerian, Biafran, or otherwise), a great starting point would be self-education (as Nigeria has failed most of us on education). Read extensively on economics, history, other tribes' cultures, etc. Anyone of us might be tapped to undertake responsibility in governance, and we as young people need to be prepared. Leading and crafting a vision for governance is very difficult, and requires facing a lot of wicked problems (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wicked_problem) such as managing pandemics. My honest opinion is that a lot of our leaders truly have no clue how to tackle the multitude of problems that face us: so you are elected in as Governor of a very poor state with few economic prospects - without a mind trained for visioning and logical thinking, you might say to yourself 'F**k this! I'm going to cut ponmo', or for lack of better ideas on what to do with your time start gallivanting on high-ways making a show of how you are arresting traffic offenders. This is why you need to broaden your mind. P.S: You might find this interesting . . . https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_Boys |
