I wonder, is it right to call your child names? Names like mumu, fool, dundy, otondo alike. Even worst this starts when the child was just a little kid. This is what i passed through. I remember feeling so depressed anytime i'm called such names to the slightest mistake like droping a glass cup. I feel this can cause a dent in a childs life, most espesially when such comes from his parents. The thing is, it never stops. I'm scared for my life because now i feel like i don't no longer belong. Alot of times i feel so depressed.

Lemme answer your question,

It is not right to call your child unprintable names...

If you have passed through that stage, what is expected of you is to prove them wrong. Your destiny is in your hands, no need dwelling in the past, it would only add to the depression and stagnation.

Get up and move on.

Are you black? If yes, by the time you are able to read and write you should be used to name calling. As for the depression, i think you should see a therapist or a pastor, who knows, your condition may be more than what meets the eyes.

But this are not just ordinary names. And they come from people you're geneticaly attached to.

Lack of love from people who are supposed to be the only source of unconditional love could hurt.

But, like someone said "prove them wrong".

Find any available opportunity to stay away from such environment/people.

These are ordinary name calling from your folks and sibs ... Get used to it and move on.... And then, try to be different and don't allow the name calling to affect you psychologically....

Stop and avoid doing things that will bring the name calling... Be extra diligent and be bold... Don't let this self esteem thing get to you... be brave bro ..

Those things you mentioned are just the normal naija parents ways of spanking a child with words

If the names our parents calls us are working on us, we all will be roaming the streets by now

They are not intended to cause harm but its meant to caution you

Then as for you as a person, you have to find out why you are feeling the way you are feeling

HOW TO KNOW IF YOUR MOTHER IS A NIGERIAN.

1. When you say "Mummy,I am sorry!! And she replies, sorry for yourself!

2. When yu ask her where you should drop something and she says, " drop it on my head.

3. When she brings food wrapped in a nylon bag from a frnd's daughter wedding.

4. When you say "Mummy, I have fever and she replies you, why won't you have fever when you press phone every night.

5. When you say Mummy I took 2nd in my class and she replies, so the person that took 1st has two heads abii??

6. When she takes the DSTV remote to work just to punish you.

7. When you are watching TV with her and she sleeps off and still doesn't want you to change the Channel.

8. When you tell her you are going to a friends place to play and she asks, " when last did that friend come here to play with you??.

10. When she tells you, if I hear peeem, you will hear weeen.

11. When she touches hot pot comfortablely without a cloth or paper.

12. When she tells you,I didn't kill my mother, so you will not kill me!!

13. When she calls you from your room upstairs and then sends you back upstairs to bring her purse.

14. When you ask her to refund the money she borrowed and she tells you, "All the food you have been eating in the house nko?

Check this out. 5,000 people will read this message. If 2,000 decide they will never call their kids these names because you, yes you, have opened their eyes to the unintended consequence of these names ... do you still think you are a mumu? Do you still feel you have no worth?

This is just one example. You are a child of the universe, not just your parents. You should walk around, proud that you can make a difference in people's lives with the slightest effort. As you have done today, simply by sharing your experience.

Let me leave you with that.

First is not good to call your children degrading names cos it makes them feel inferior and suffer from low self-esteem
But one way for you to be free from it is start seeing yourself as you want people to see you,add value to yourself by reading books, always try to be confident in what you do..
Try to acquire skills and knowledge of what other people lack..they will add value to you cos you are now a solution to their prayer..
Secondly is that you can find peace and love from the word of God(Bible)....God has given us the spirit of boldness and Peace...
I understand all your are passing through but if you do the things here you will see change in your life...
If you can talk about it with your mum when she is in good mood it will help as well

Are you sacred for your life that you might end up hurting yourself? How do you mean?

In any case, please understand that you’re worthy. Even if your parents made you feel otherwise. Parents are supposed to speak life into their kids not make them depressed by constantly bringing them down.

If you ever feel strongly that you might hurt yourself, please pick up the phone and call someone. Step outside the house at that moment. Go somewhere where there are people. Anything in the moment to distract you from harmful thoughts.

You are not a mumu, fool or dundy. Many parents/adults do this, thinking it is normal but it not and they are very wrong. It was done to them too so they feel it is normal, harmless, but are so wrong. Some try to stop but are already used to the habit. Our generation of parents/adults need to break the cycle.

My God!

I don’t even remember any names I was called. As a Nigerian child, I was used to it and developed extremely THICK SKIN. grin I choose my words carefully when addressing children sha. I don’t like the way they look and feel when I get mouthy with them.

Besides, they will learn to be verbally and physically abusive if you subject them to abuse.

I avoid this as much possible. Not in this day and age please.
Re: I'm Scared For My Life. by truespeak: 6:59am On May 13, 2020
When I was a child, I talked and acted as one, hence the names which are meant to wake you up, not to like being called a fool e.t.c , and to talk and act properly for you would notice the difference when you do, that the name calling stops and you are called "mature" like an adult which further encourages you in that path.
