It baffles me how don't respect themselves on a public forum such as Nairaland. Is this as a result of failure in family upbringing, lack of proper education or simply an abuse of social media & it's liberty?

As Africans, we were taught to respect people in the society, greet one another pleasantly (Igala for example can literally extend salutations for up to 5 minutes) and treat others with mutual respect.

But nowadays it's different on public forums where wisdom and knowledge should have been shared for enlightenment & edification, instead you see inter ethnic clashes, derogatory remarks, intolerance to diversity & other people's opinion, also bring her down syndrome of many women here on NL.

Let us learn to do things differently. For the sake of ourselves and portray the characteristics of our home bringing.

We are not taught to respectfully handle different opinions.

Besides, we can't relate with people as peers. We are either above or below them.

Poor upbringing coupled with the anonymity that social media affords. A teenager on Nairaland will readily insult a 60 year old whose children can easily employ him and sustain his father's household just because there is no direct contact!

Anonymity, funny enough we have a good number of matured quality persons on the forum.

Because they are miserable on and offline.
Some have very poor communication skills.
Others. . . Just envy your “swag”. . . . You are not miserable, petty or jobless like them!

there is country without jail meaning there is always people causing trouble

It's one thing to tolerate other people's opinions and another to tolerate bullshit which people freely share because it is a faceless forum. A few weeks ago someone was telling me that COVID-19 does not exist (offline) followed by a conspiracy theory that was as illogical as you can imagine. Am I supposed to tolerate stupidity in the name of "opinion"? If you talk shit I will let you know. It's not by force to post nonsense.

Anonymity doesn’t play a part here because people are equally as disrespectful on Facebook. I guess there a lot of angry people who use the internet as their only outlet. It will give a further understanding to why they schedule fights against their trolls whereby they finally unleash pent up anger on the idiot. If such started happening here (scheduling fights) a lot of uncouth children will disappear. Many of them can throw insults on the regular but can’t do the same when it comes to fists.

In many case, undiagnosed mental illness.

The environment contributes to this.
