Ebonyi Still Remain The Poorest State Despite Flashy Chinese Lights And Constructions

Why are Ebonyi and Enugu state having such high poverty rates? They are the only Southeast states with poverty rate above the national average. Enugu is 58.13% and Ebonyi is 79.76%. Ebonyi, particularly, is a concern. Its poverty rate is similar to those of Northeast and Northwest states. The Ebonyi Governor has been pleading some sort of political exceptionalism from other southeast states. He is modeled as a high performing Governor. How come his high performance has not translated to significant improvement in social and economic wellbeing of Ebony people? Didn’t they say that authoritarianism is a better model of governance than democracy for African states and societies. So, why haven’t Umahi’s authoritarian politics and repressive leadership style lifted Ebony from chronic poverty as captured by the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS) poverty and inequality report?

Yes, Umahi has built stronger and better roads than most southeast governors. He has also built some needless structures. But he has neglected investment in the economic and social wellbeing of Ebonyi for the past 5 years. His good-enough physical infrastructure initiatives have come at the cost of hugely needed initiatives in economic and social wellbeing. When I traveled to Abakiliki as the Chairman of a private sector-based innovation hub in Ebonyi, I went around the state capital and returned the verdict that the Governor has done well in physical infrastructure, but has failed big on human development. I did not see the level of commercial transactions that will lift up thousands trapped in chronic poverty. I did not see the level of political freedom you expect to see in a southeast state. The atmosphere was repressive and those I spoke to confirmed the significant lack of political freedom in Ebony. Somehow, lack of political freedom may be both an indicator and a cause of economic unfreedom.

Governor Umahi should revise his policy script for the rest of his tenure to change the poor rating of his beloved state. And when he finishes his tenure, Ebonyi people should elect as Governor someone who understand the value of economic and political freedoms and will invest in projects that will improve economic and social wellbeing rather than on concrete and blocks.

To begin with, I neither trust nor give too much significance to the dubious data from Nigerian Bureau statistics. No single academician in the world takes data coming out of Nigeria seriously. Everyone in the world knows Nigeria is painfully notorious for data falsification and forgery for political expediency. So, trust Nigerian data at your peril.

Some people have set their evil eyes on Ebonyi politically and have an evil agenda for the state. The recent Ebonyi mall thread clearly shows how bitter and determined they are to employ propaganda against Ebonyi people as part of their wicked strategy against Ndigbo.

Truth be told, many Nigerians especially those from the other two big ethnic groups would rather see the southeast as an undeveloped and backward jungle. Many of them actually agonize that despite the marginalization of southeast Nigeria in every possible way, the region has managed to continue to survive and develop! The Op forgot to post that Umahi built the largest and most modern market in Nigeria in the last 50 years! He has offered A LOT of initiatives to bring back Ebonyi youths from cities such as Lagos and help them establish businesses in the state with soft loans.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58O5ro4iA_w&t=26s

The truth is that Ebonyi needs world-class infrastructure if it must achieve its destiny as a great state. Part of the art of attracting people to come to Abakaliki, set up a business in Abakaliki, and live your fullest life in Abakaliki, involves building modern facilities they could have found elsewhere.

When Abuja was being built, there was still massive poverty in Nigeria! Yet, nobody argued that building Abuja rather than giving more money to Nigerians to alleviate poverty was a bad strategy. Abuja was once a barren forest and modern infrastructure was built there with the hope that one day it will have everything which was present in Lagos, thus people will go there to live and start a business. That is exactly what Gov. Dave Umahi is doing in Abakaliki.

Thanks a bunch my bro. The enemies of Ndigbo are ever thinking of ways to destroy us yet a lot of our people are not aware of it. Ever since the non-credible NBS released their dubious statistic, you can clearly see how sons of the fallen demons have been writing articles up and down to justify the lies. Their attack has been on Ebonyi and Enugu states. If there's any way they can organize an 'owambe' to celebrate it, they'd have done so. Igbos must come to the realization of who these people are and respond accordingly to them.

insightful, I have always agured with some morones in ebonyi that umahi is building does concrete works because of his pockets,in this jet age how do you built street lights that run on gas while you have solar street lights back up with the new innovations of lithium batteries, ebonyians re hard working people and have a lot of endurance but have not found the right economic and political atmosphere to prosper, a typical ebonyian and business men is taxed to the last kobo by umahis administration, youths re kept in perpetual ignorance in the name of neigbour hood watch to be used as political tool, no palatives of any sort has been given by the governor in this covid 19 pandemic, yet we hear of monies been spent on palatives to the extent ebonyians in Lagos and abuja re been captured in the monies being spent yet nobody in ebonyi or ebonyians in diaspora has received anything, he can only deceive the gullible and can not deceive everybody at the same time.

I have always asked those with human brain to explain this based on their popular NBS statistics that South east is on the same level of poverty with North west and north East, then why is the national social register not reflecting the same in terms of numbers of beneficiaries.... Please I need response devoid of tribal banters.

In my opinion, Ebonyi despite being economically disadvantaged is considered progressive. Every sector will not develop at the same time. The infrastructures being built in Abakaliki is not for the now, but for the future.

Enugu city if you ask me, is a first class Nigerian city, what I don't understand is the economic stagnancy of it's neighbouring communities.

There is no need for all these. Umahi is the worst governor in the SE, bare none.

Ebonyi has the highest number of out of school children in the south but the fat fool is wasting scarce resources littering the environment with pink, purple and white elephants.

Do you think that if MI Okpara and others were similarly clueless you would be able to come to the internet and talk about how “ despite the marginalization of southeast Nigeria in every possible way, the region has managed to continue to survive and develop“?

It’s even obvious that author of the article is from the SE. There is no shame in speaking the truth even if some others want to pretend.

Can you imagine, You are bringing MI OKpara who had funds in his hands from the eastern region, that comprises SS and SE to Dave? Please don't try that, I beg you. Respect that leader!

Then again, in the few months of MI OKpara did he touch the whole region? Was every sector working like mad?

He doesn’t have to make every “sector work like mad”, all he needs to do is understand his priorities and face them. It’s not because you’re a civil engineer, you continue wasting public funds building irrelevant nonsense.

Am a proud Ebonyian and to God be the Glory, am not poor cool

I have come to notice a huge propaganda ongoing since this week just to ridicule the fastest growing state in the southsouth and southeast which is Ebonyi state and this is unacceptable. People indulging on such should desist from it and ask God to cure the spirit of jealousy from their lives.

Yes! Because it is only jealousy that can make one on seeing the progress of another decides to rubbish that progress by typing balderdash just because you have access to a keypad

Ebonyi happens to be the only state in the east that supplies chippings to the whole of southeast.

Ebonyi salt happens to be the best of all salts due to its iodine content

Ebonyi happens to be the only state in the southeast that used concrete cement to construct rural and urban roads all over the state.

Ebonyi has the best and highest modernized flyovers in the whole of southeast. A visit will convince you.

Ebonyi state has the best place to trade in the southeast. Of course you have seen the international market built with sophisticated equipments.

Ebonyi state is blessed with a Federal university, a state university, a college of education, college of nursing, college of agriculture and recently the federal government wants to establish a federal college of education in the state.

On Cement, Ebonyi has the best limestone for cement production. Also highest in rice production.

One can only look and conclude that it is only jealousy that is killing the people that are out to tarnish the image of this beloved state.

No matter what, Ebonyi state and Ebonyians will continue to rise and rise.

God bless Ebonyians.
God bless Ebonyi state.

Truth be told , Ebonyi is the most backward state in the southern Nigeria. Most places in ebonyi state doesn't even have drinking water, no road, no school, no health facility.

Ebonyi produces only illiterates and miscreants. Our citizens are all over Nigeria hawking gala and bread but our leaders doesn't see the need to invest in human resources and education. For instance, is Ebonyi building mall for army of poor people of Ebonyi state? Human capital development and education is the future of Ebonyi state.
