If you have money the best place to stay in Owerri with your family equivalent to anywhere in the world is Royal Palm Resort at Akachi. It's incomparable with typical Nigeria.

Heroes Apartments the one under is the loca version but also manageable

I can relate. Royal palms is like an upgraded version of Hero’s apartments with more luxurious finishing. I have stayed at hero’s apartment, so I can guess what royal palms is like.

Looking at it, it's three lane per side... Then there'll be a little extra lane for parking or pedestrians

It's a simple thing, let him just give out to contract to paint the markings, and put arrows where necessary

Please, those "trees" in the middle, are they natural?

I think the drain will be covered and used as sidewalk, since it has pouches.

I remember this road those days. Am I the only one or is there something substandard about these road pictures I am seeing? I've noticed it in the other road pictures alsi

I just hope I'm wrong

As this particular road is not substandard, they are even using sharp sand mixed with cement before the stone base layer

Yeah, I know roads with cement base are pretty strong and will last long. Lagos state did it for the Abeokuta express road. Good job there

Thank you for your comments. Same thing I've been trying to say. All the states can't be into building of factories and industries, Imo has decided to invest in the hospitality sector, let's allow it be.

What people don't know is that the presence of the hospitality industry will lead to a boost in several other industries in Imo state such as agriculture and transport sectors.

Just as you mentioned Dubai, let me add Las Vegas. These are cities whose economy are majorly based on the hospitality sector and are cashing out from it.

The hospitality sector requires agricultural produce to survive, such as meat, fish, chicken, vegetables and staple crops. That'll bring a boost to the agric sector.

It also requires the transport sector. People fly into Las Vegas and Dubai just to spend the weekends, who said such can't be achieved in Imo state, considering we already have an airport. Let the roads be repaired, then u'll be surprised Uber might soon launch in Imo state.

From recent posts on this thread, it seems there is an increase in road construction which is a very good thing. We will get there, it's a gradual process

@Sanctity454, note that the value of a building isn't just the building alone but also the ground/location on which it was built. You look down at the massive hotels in Owerri, because they were built in Owerri.

If these same hotels were built in, say GRA Lagos or Lekki, you'll be the one complaining they are building "billion naira hotels" outside Imo state. So that you feel they ain't worth that much is just because of where they are built.

I've been very curious about this subject matter of hospitality industries in Owerri, please what is the major factor driving people to use the hotels, because I don't see any major tourist center in Owerri

God bless you for this. I've been mentioning it, not knowing that work has started on that road. The road practically leads to a BIG DITCH filled with dirty water, whereas it would have just been a shortcut to join Mbaise road.

Please, which of the men in the picture is the governor, or isn't he there? (I don't know him)... Thanks

Owerri craze seems to continue.
But when shall Imo get elite class that understands that Owerri can’t contain one-quarter of the population of Imo state?

Enugu state had to prop up a new governor from Nsukka zone to modernize Nsukka area for population shift from Enugu. Gov Ugwuanyi is just doing that.

Abia state had to prop up a new governor from Aba zone to work on the dilapidated infrastructures in Aba and environs. Gov Ikpeazu is just doing that. Few talk about Umuahia these days as before.

In Imo, just provide durable source for public water supply and tertiary education institutions in Orlu and Okigwe areas, that’s all it shall take for modernity and population shift to both areas.

If the people of Imo state talking about, and craving more government infrastructures and institutions only in Owerri, also campaign for modern development infrastructures and institutions for Orlu and Okigwe areas, at least, to save Owerri from becoming a chaotic city, the governors would have listened to them.

There doesn't have to be a major tourist centre to drive the hospitality industry. Look at the places we cited, the hotels themselves become the driving factor.

Don't forget during Ohakim's time, Imo won the neatest capital and his clean and green policy brought a kinda soothing feeling when you visit. People want to relax in a place where there isn't pollution, low crime rate, reduced noise, good food, and a general feeling of peace... Consider the fact that Imo is also kinda centralised in the South East, surrounded by Anambra, Rivers, and Abia. It just feels like Israel in the midst of the turbulent Arab nations (no offence intended to those in the other states)

That's what Imo provides, and Rochas capitalized on that and brought the hospitality REVOLUTION we are witnessing today. Imo now has a name as "ebe Mme Mme" or where you come to "gba oringo". He organised a lot of events for this to happen and even took personal interest in the development of Ibari Ogwa. So whether we like it or not, a big kudos goes to him for that

Just yesterday, someone posted on this thread about Oguta lake with accompanying video, I know the zoo in Owerri (Old Nekede) is one of the few in the country with a lion and lioness (atleast I saw them when I visited), although the road to that place is very bad. So we can say Imo hasn't even started making use of its tourist centres in attracting visitors.

Look at the examples you have about other states, maybe it's high time people from ORLU and Okigwe realise that they have to prop up a new governor from Mbaise for them to develop, since their own people have been disappointing them. Don't you think?... Lol

Six universities and polytechnics in Imo state are all located in or nearest to Owerri. Unique to Imo but to no other state. The young flesh of about 200,000 girls - and boys - in these education institutions drive the tourism industry in Owerri. Imopoly is nearest to Owerri. No Las Vegas or Healing River in Owerri to attract tourists.

Tell Owerri that one of the institutions needs to be relocated to Orlu or to Okigwe areas, you get demonized, or be told to organize people from Orlu or Okigwe to contribute money to establish private university in their domains. Filthy mindset.

Who would have known that hospitality could boost a state so fast, I actually respect Rochas a lot for that aspect. The way I'm seeing development pop up on this thread, malls and etc. Seems the state would soon experience a sharp growth

Well I thought about this too, unfortunately it's inevitable. It's all over the country, poverty is the culprit .. but I've not still understood your major drive for this Develop Orlu. I believe Rochas already started it.

I'm from Orlu zone though, back then traveling home , road was really bad in Orlu town but I think Rochas fixed it, also he built a private/public school in his hometown Eastern Palm university.

That equally is development in Orlu zone

Rochas government started to build Eastern Palm University for Imo state university.
Who has ever seen public/private university at work?

It was when Owerri (Mbaise in particular), raised war-like opposition to location of IMSU permanent outside Owerri that the idea of public/private university came.

In any case, Ihedioha government commission directed that the university be used for IMSU campus in Ideato. It’s left for governor Uzodinma to implement the directive of Ihedioha commission. Hopefully, Uzodinma understands, like Okorocha did understand, that it’s abnormal not having a government university in Orlu senatorial zone of 12 local government areas.

Leave one or two faculties of Imsu in Owerri zone. Engineering faculty at Umuna Okigwe.

My brother, it's not a one size fits all scenerio. If we use your analogy, Ogun state should be the hub of hospitality in Nigeria because they have the highest number of higher institutions in the country, unfortunately it's not.

Las Vegas is seen as the "sin city" in America, but how many universities are in it? Just few. Obollo Afor in Enugu state has the highest number of prostitutes in South East, but there is no STANDARD hotel there, not even one. Most top hotels in Lagos are either in Ikeja or on the Island, but there are no universities there.

These universities have been in Imo state for many years, but the revolution started during Rochas time. If the environment isn't condusive, do you think people will come even when you have universities everywhere?

The point I'm trying to make is that the presence of the universities helped, but isn't what is driving the tourism/hospitality sector.
.
On a side note, I completely agree with your last statement. I've not been to IMSU before but I've always wondered why don't they just have three campuses- One in Owerri, One in Orlu and One in Okigwe, rather than just concentrating it in Owerri.

The palm university can be used for this purpose. The government should also look into the state polytechnic and employ capable hands, not those dull lecturers who don't know what they are doing there. Infact, M.Sc should be the lowest qualification to work as an academician in any of the state owned institutions

Universities and polytechnics in or nearest Owerri added up to six, or even more.
No other state in Nigeria has this feature.

Before 1999, Owerri Politicians led mostly by Mbaise, saw to location of all these institutions in Owerri.
That has led to mass education for natives of Owerri zone who attend lectures from home, but least educated number of people for natives of Orlu zone.

Three campuses for IMSU in the three senatorial zones should have been okay, but wayo and cuny man from Owerri zone will reply you that Imo state university teaching hospital in Orlu is share of Orlu zone.
But Imo state university teaching hospital is not a university per se. It’s a hospital frequented for practicals by a handful of medical students from Owerri.
Owerri has withheld the Engineering campus slated for Okigwe zone and pretends that all is well.

I really don’t think so, I’m very sure many of those factories/companies in nnwei or in Aba are not owned by Anambarians or Abians, to which many will be owned by Imo indigenes too. Investors look for where they will enjoy economics of scale as well. I’m aware Tummy Tummy noddles factory is based in Anambra but the owner of Tummy Tummy is from Imo state, same as orange drugs have a factory in Onitsha, but he is from Imo state. ABC transport is the biggest brand in transport and Cargo in Nigeria today, he is also from Imo. So please, we need to drop these complains, afterall, the investor did his viability and feasibility research, to know which will generate for him the most return on investment, before investing his capital. An imolite can have a tissue paper or soap manufacturing company in Nnewi and build his hotel in owerri. It works well.

Tourism is all well and good, but what quality of jobs does it provide? How much do waiters, bell boys and the like make?

When people talk of Aku rue ulo, it’s not just for bragging rights. You want to provide good paying jobs to retain our best and brightest and fund our government to further develop our potential.

I don’t believe that an exclusive focus on tourism is suitable for a state like ours given our population density and factor endowments.

Moreover, an over reliance on any single income source is a looming danger for an economy.
