Hello Pet lovers,

I need advice from your guys' experience please. I love pets but I am being constrained by work schedule from getting one. I work in a bank and spend 7am to 7pm of Monday to Friday away from the house. How possible is it to get and care for a dog with such schedule?

Kind advice and suggestions needed please.

It depends on the dog, if it's a palour dog then it's better but if it's a security dog then you have to devote time everyday to see the dog and play with it. Make sure you see the dog before you go to work and after coming back from work, then spend longer time with it on weekends.

You can get a dog, my own job requires my time, and I leave my house as early as 6-7am.
Below is my dog, his name is chance, I got him at a tender age. He is 9 months now.

This is how I train him
1. I potty train him to poo in the toilet, and I leave my toilet door open, I live alone in a two-bedroom duplex and he stays in the veranda with protector whenever I leave for work, fortunately my toilet is located at the veranda and I leave the door open for him.

2.i feed him twice ones in the morning and the other at night

3. I exercise him 3 times in a week because his energy level is very high

4. I love dogs to the core and dude is security alert all time, he refuse to be friendly with my neighbors even though he know them very well, he will bark and charge at them if anyone comes close to my door grin.

Yes you can. I leave home by 7am and return by 7 too but on rare occassions 11-1 am the next day. I stay alone too. I have a caucasian and a gsd. My routine;
1. Feed and take them out to do their business before i go to work and when i return
2. Walk them when i return from work (5 times in a week)
3. Long walk on saturday by 7am
4. I make sure i spend enough time with them when i come back from work. It's easier cos i stay alone. They are like my companions. They stay inside the house when i am at home so they see me and play with me
5. For the training, i do that when playing with them. The cauc loses interest quickly so the training must not be for long and it's only when she is interested in whatever you are telling her. You can use their food to get their attention and reward them when they get whatever it is you are teaching them.

Please don't get a dog. Dogs need a lot of attention. I believe that dogs are best kept in families with a lot of people around them. Don't get a dog to be left alone all day long.

I think it is difficult. You can take care of your pet after you return from work. The most important thing is to constantly monitor the condition of the animal and often carry it to the veterinarian. You can find out about the best vets at thepets.net/veterinarians/. No matter what kind of animal you have, you should always devote time to it.

How do you manage with the Caucasian inside your house? I have a cauc and I'll love to be keeping him inside but the hairs is an issue, coupled with his size, I keep thinking he'll mistakenly knock over my TV

Omo the dog is outside now. The shedding got worse as she got older. I couldn't deal with it anymore. Though she's really careful with stuff when inside the house. You can leave her alone in the house and meet your house the same way when you come back.

I get why you're iffy about getting a pet because of your busy work schedule but all I can say is, you can. Pets have different temperaments; there are some that are very clingy and might not be okay being left alone for long hours, but there are also some who are independent and don't mind having their owner away from them most of the time. You can adopt a pet like that. The only thing I'll advise is that before you leave your pet at home, you should 'puppy proof' your home. Meaning, make your house safe for your pet since you can't be there 24/7 to monitor them. You can read more about 'puppy proofing' your home here:

Goodluck with your pet!
