Eeben Barlow during his operations in the N.E frontline, Nigeria.
Terminating their contract was the worst thing that happened in the war against Terror. They would have built a mobile lightening Force capable of hitting hard and fast. That force could have been the first line of defense.

I disagree with this. Terminating their contract did not change anything. The Nigerian army is still an effective fighting machine.

I agree with recruiting contractors to build skills, and train and set up units, but not to fight in the field.

I recently read articles of their operation in Nigeria, while commendable there were still areas of lapses.

Yeap the 72 MSF was indeed a formidable strike force that was effective and was part of the means the high military used to drive BHT back to lake chad fringes.
But the truth is how long will Eeben Barlow team will be with a professional army like the NA, it’s not that our soldiers are not well trained but we lacked a lot of capabilities Eeben Barlow his team and the 72MSF enjoyed. They all have the REVA MRAPs, dedicated air wings, enjoyed gunships and airstrike when ever and how ever they needed it.
Has someone asked where are those helicopters used during Eeben Barlow crusade; the gazelle, the white Mi17i and those eurocopter AS350 ? This are the capabilities he enjoyed, why not do the same to our troops.
Give the army there own dedicated air wing/attack helicopters, equip them well. Make MRAPs are basic means of transport for all troops and you’ll see that BHT will dare not to attack our military convoys any how again.
Like @odunnayo said some few pages back, give our troops the necessary equipment to fight has we gave Barlow and is team , BHT would have been long degraded.

Just my own view !

The truth is that a dedicated air wing for the army is not possible for now, even the air component of the army of present is almost non existent. To operate a fleet of say two dedicated attack helicopters with capabilities of troop insertion, and compliments of all technical crews, ammunitions, maintenance, fuel etc we will atleast need to budget a whopping $100m for that sole purpose, that is just to kick start it. Same unit will require heavy funding to sustain a 24/7 operations. The army don't have that kind of money to accommodate such in their annual budget, infact na recurrent expenditure dey swallow the greater part of their annual budget.

I know it’s expensive but I don’t want to believe we don’t have the money. The problem is just the right leaders/politicians.

We currently have an offensive going on, have you forgotten? grin grin

Remember the benefits 72MSF had, the Nigerian army is strong, we have numbers of dedicated soldiers.

What the army needs is equipment, not just any type, but serviceable equipment in large numbers.

The army requires a minimum of 509 MRAPs in the North East alone, artillery and tanks. Air support whenever it is needed. Then watch our army in full throttle.

Did we use mercenaries in Sierra Leone and Liberia?

Why do you think our military operations in those countries were so successful?

It all boils down to funds, we spent almost $3bn restoring peace to those countries, we also lost alot of men. If you ask me, that adventure wasn't worth it because till date we haven't benefited anything rather it's the Chinese and other nationals that are reaping from where they didn't sow.

I agree that you are right.

However I won't say that the adventures weren't worth it, they provided Nigeria considerable modern battle field experience, and the experience of fighting in built up areas.

Corruption and a lack of investment did stifle our growth since the end of that campaign, but we are starting to rebuild our capabilities, our Air Force, the Navy and Army are investing little by little, the defence industry is developing little by little.

If we can get another fresh crop of forward looking men to lead our military, also funds, even if it is a yearly 1 billion dollars dedicated to procurement we would see change.

For example the Philippines military is currently running a modernization programme.

How much are they spending, just over 3 billion a year, or 4 billion at most. We can do that, our military would be better off for it.

There is no better feeling than seeing a military convoy of made in Nigeria vehicles. I'm very very sure that in the not so distant future it will be a reality.

I remember the army was supposed to get Varta MRAPs from Ukraine, but that contract has been cancelled in favour of vehicles from Proforce & DICON.

When I see a Turkish army convoy, I immediately wish that's Nigeria.

Our very own armoured convoy attached.

The Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation LAFIYA DOLE, on 18 May 2020, neutralized unconfirmed number of Boko Haram Terrorists (BHTs) and destroyed 2 of their gun trucks on the outskirts of Dapchi Town in Yobe State. The air operation was conducted following reports that BHT/ISWAP terrorists, in about 5 vehicles, had launched an attack on the Town. A Helicopter Gunship was scrambled to engage the terrorists and scored direct hits on their vehicles, destroying 2 of them and killing the occupants.
The Chief of the Air Staff commends the Air Task Force for their professionalism and directs them to remain resolute towards eradicating the the terrorists from the North East.

Guys operations going on in the lake chad area has been kept secret for now.
No report about field reports to the public, reasons I can tell. By now the VT-4 MBT should be in the frontline by now.

I doubt the vt4 would be used in the north east, we have lost a lot of weapons based on attrition , I think the new weapons are to free the old weapons in other parts of the country to be moved into the northeast , when the new weapons are used to restock Nigerian arsenal.

I think the air force used the same logic, in buying 3 jf17 too, to reduce the gap of lost f7 jets

L-39ZA jets are currently replacing the F-7 jets in the field. The F-7s are currently undergoing deep maintenance by CATIC in Nigeria.

The JF-17s are a capability leap, I don't think they would be rushed into service.

I also agree that the new hardware the army got might not be rushed into service. These are more sophisticated vehicles than what we previously had. So, there's a big might, however with the Nigerian army, you never know.
