Don't let any sugar-coated gibberish fool you. If you're a security man, you're a loser.

Now, it's ok to be a loser if you were born into it, but it's disturbing to remain a loser for life.

So put on your thinking cap and get rich or die trying.

This is basically a societal/cultural problem in Nigeria. Our belief system does not encourage dignity of labour but rather places value on getting rich quick, it has always been so long before Yahoo Yahoo & money rituals became profound crimes.

I know someone that had his B.Sc and masters degree in the UK and worked as a security guard at some point as a side hustle, yet he nor the people around him didn't see it as a big deal. One of Obama's daughters served as a fast food restaurant attendant during his time as the president of America to keep her busy while on holiday etc etc. Menial jobs may not pay fantastically but they're important services nonetheless.

These show that we really need to change our orientation and value system here.

OP just persevere, you'll get a more desirable work soonest

You've said it all. Our foundation as a society is very faulty.

This my thread is just mainly for single men and guys outside there and I would like to share my experience with you guys on what I have undergone and experienced as a Security guard.

To be a security guard is not a job I can advise my enemy to opt for let alone my friend or relation. The job is a regardless one and very disgusting.

As a security guard, you are more or less a beggar in the street, should I say beggar has a little regard more than you.

When people see you, they see nothing in you. Most especially when you're trying to speak to them in English making them to know that you're educated...(laugh..) You just did it wrong, to them it means you are having mental problem.

The image impression of 98% of people on guys who do this job to hustle for their lives rather than involving in criminal practices is that they have no future; is that they cannot make it in their lives; e.t.c.

Since I've started this job when I finished my program in the polytechnic, any lady I made to know about the job I do turns me off later, some said it's a beggars' work.

And currently, I hardly have female friends not to talk of girlfriends or marriage.

Though, I didn't mean to start this job before if not condition, but now I'm planning to quit the job and find another.

Sometimes, I cried in my room, begging God to show me another way.

One of the workers in the place of work that I'm guiding once told me that his dog is better off than me. This is even the person that cannot even compose simple correct English, he said his dog is better than me.

Your experience too is allowed... Thank you.

Thank God that you at least have a job that provides meal on your table.

My view from this piece is that of someone with low self esteem. someone that is into ladies but heavy constrained by current low pay and nature of work. someone that tends to focus on both hearsay and direct disparage talk or chitchat from colleagues and alike.

Just a piece of wisdom "Life is riding a bicycle, to keep your balance you must keep moving".

Working as a security or mai-guard (as its popularly called the northerner) is not the issue. What are u long term plans, what are the extra activities you are engaged in should you kiss your present job goodbye. I read somewhere that a current president of one African State was once a security in a foreign land. I equally learnt that the CEO of one popular technology company was once a driver in Lagos state.

I no say body no be wood, since it seems women is one thing u can't hold of at the moment. I simply advice that you completely ignore that opposite sex or you can get ladies within your budget.

But never, never give up. The bigger and sumptuous future is for those willing to prepends the little " EXTRA" to "ORDINARY".

From what I've read, you are ashamed of doing what puts food on your table. Many are looking for your type of job to no avail. Remember to keep that I'm a polytechnic graduate nonsense by the corner. What makes you think that you are better or wiser than those who didn't go to school? I'm presently running a PhD programme and that doesn't stop me from hustling in any form, shape or scope. Hustle hard o, forget about girls now and hustle, keep building your resume with interesting skills while at this job, start dropping your upgraded resume like a mad man to any company you see, who knows when your luck would shine?
Some graduates in their skill section would put Microsoft word, excel grin, typing skills, I would just laugh. What happened to I can analyse data using python data science module such as Pandas and then visualization through matplotlib and Bokeh. This wouldn't even take you up to 2-4weeks to master. Upgrade yourself daily, read, read and read.
Can you save some cash and aquire basic shoe making and Pam slippers production machines? Or even attach yourself with a mechanic to learn motor repair or generator repair (Mikano)?
Gracias!

Is it me or it is that Nigerians generally do not like humble beginnings. It seems everyone want to work in an big office, big government office and want to be paid huge money at the beginning. What wrong with security? Are they stealing or killing? Work like that is not a permanent thing, swallow your ego. Use this job as a motivation tool to do better.

Op, listen, looking down on people based on their job or income or financial status is very common among women, so don’t let their let down wear you down or derail you from your goals and destination in life. Go and find that Christian song that says:

my tomorrow will be greater than today…. no matter what they say, there is one thing I know….my tomorrow will be greater than my today” always play it and believe the words it says with all your heart.

Listen, stay focused on that your security job now, make good use of it....learn to save and stop listening to what people are saying about your job....enjoy the job now......thank God for it while praying for a better one.

I will give you few life experiences around me…I have an elder brother who failed to pass WAEC repeatedly to the extent my dad gave up on him and told him straight up that he won’t register him for any other WAEC….this guy was writing WAEC & GCE when his mates were already in their 3rd and final year in the university. He managed to pass GCE in 2 sittings and was only able to secure admission into a Polytechnic. By the time he got admission into the Polytechnic, his mates were serving and some working already. He remained steadfast and let go of every pride and focused on his studies. He is not that bright academically, but in practical, he is a machine.

He finished his OND and did a direct entry to university to continue there. I think in his final year in the university, he got a job with a multinational company in Nigeria using his OND and his salary was the same with Bsc holders in many big companies. Due to his technical knowhow, he got promoted severally with OND, and he worked his NYSC to serve near his workplace, so after NYSC, his company advertised an internal recruitment for Bsc holders, he applied with his Bsc and was successful and moved to a higher postion. As we speak, he is a manager in a bigger multinational firm and earning salary in the millions…married not long ago due to his late performances in life but with kids now. But despite his late movements, he is now far ahead of all those his mates including those that use to look down on him for not securing admission early enough. That is how time works for us, so let them continue to laugh at you….your time will come if you don’t allow your current situation to derail you.

I have a close childhood friend who after NYSC couldn’t secure a job, so he joined one of the transport companies as conductor of their buses….from there he moved to working as security…and later as IT assistant in a computer center and from there, due to his constant access to the internet he met his wife, a foreign lady who God used to elevate him, as we speak, he is an American citizen and now earning fat salary…own houses in Nigeria now….with latest cars. He is now the one taken care of his wife as he now earns far more than his wife but he doesn’t joke with that his wife at all.

These are just few examples….even my own life is a bigger testimony but I won’t bore you and others with my own personal story but I want to tell you that your tomorrow will be greater than your today.

And as for those mocking all of you reading this post, just because you are a security guard or bartender or whatever belittling job you are doing….I want to tell you guys something, they always get their reward here on earth, they might end up rich, they might be rich, but their reward may come in the form of very difficult health challenge that will humble them, so my brothers and sisters, never you mock people that are suffering or those below you economically, socially or financially…always show empathy to the plight of others, tomorrow is very pregnant!

Your story can be changed but know what you really want in life and stay focused on that, even while doing whatever job you have now. Some security guards saw their life changing opportunities while on the job. Yours could be found there too or elsewhere but you have to choose between being focused; doing your job well while it lasts and impressing women or anyone.

I did security job for 4 years and I know about all these your experiences and even more, from my experience elderly people and rich people use to respect security men a lot but most young people especially girls have little or no regards for security men.. I'll encourage you to continue the job for now and set a target for yourself, set a target that by this time next year or next 2 years you must quit no matter the odds, try and save something even though I know it's difficult to save because of the very poor salary.. I can tell you that there's hardly any happy security man out there, we were 6 guys then working together that year but none of us was happy with the job, because of things like this and the poor salary.. I know the insults I received as a security guard and the stigmatisation but I just looked back now and laugh over those moments, they are like fun to me now.. I learnt patience and endurance from the job.. Remember set a target for yourself.

I used to work part time as the admin manager in a private security company and can attest the way they are perceived.

However, that is beside the point. Security job for someone who wants a bright future is a short term endeavor and not a long term one. You'd be shocked how many successfully people once did this job.

Have a plan.

Request for a location where you will get tips, like a fast food restaurant. Live off the tips and save the salary. Do this for 2 years and you'll save about 400,000. There were many guards who never touched their salaries.

If you can get a hotel, you can save much more money. Just be very determined. In hotel at times, you can make as much as a 100,000 in a month. Saving 50k a month will leave you with over 1m in 2 years time. With the savings, you can set up a business.

See security work as a stepping stone and not simply for managing. Talk to your operations manager. If possible, tip him to get you a good location. Don't forget to settle him regularly so he won't remove you. Most importantly, behave yourself at your location as lapses are the primary cause of being called to base.

Sad one. There is really no much hope for the Nigerian graduate/youth.

You are not the problem, OP. The people who look down on you are the problem. It is okay if a man is not your choice, but it is very low to put down a man’s hustle. Especially in this generation where delayed gratification is going extinct.

OP, people who understand the concept of hardwork and time, wouldn’t act the way those girls do. Nigerians are very vile creatures on the average. They look down on people doing those jobs you do, cleaners, drivers, security men...etc. Ironically these are the people that make your work easier. They are same people that can mess you up badly.

That is why I always say, the true test of a person’s character isn’t how they treat those above them, it is how they treat those below them. Those people they feel owe them nothing. People they think can amount to nothing.

Try finding something to augment your resources. There are various skills to learn, selfpity won’t get you anywhere.

You mean "people they feel they owe nothing"?

I have worked in an establishment that the security guys grew from been security personnel to becoming sales agents in same organisation. This guys were focused and did their work differently.

Please work on your mindset and grow. The security post should not be your final destination but it is part of your success story.
I also know of someone as a security officer in a University that run SSCE, then B.sc , Then M.sc , then PhD and used his contacts in the school to get Job as a Lecturer....

The security was his Beginning of success story!

with 10years of dedication and Commitment, All these academic qualifications are achievable and you will change your story and that of your generations to come.

my own experience is not a security job, but to be looking after a man's shop, he is into aluminum windows, doors n d rest. Just yesterday he told me that I am of no use in his shop, the first time I came here, he said that I don't have much things to be doing here, so within my first two weeks of staying in his shop,I had to meet the workers to teach me some of the job like putting of brush, rubber on the glass, coupling, tightening of screws n d rest so that I can be helping out when the need arises. Only for this man to tell me yesterday that I am of no use to him forgetting before the lockdown when i do help out if there is enough work to do and he told my frd that connected me to him that he s tired and needs another person. if not for this covid 19, I should be planning for my nysc now. He talks and shout at me anyhow, as if I am an ssce cert, but I graduated last year from IMT, I studied computer science. I planned to use part of the nysc money to get a fairly used laptop so that I can upgrade my IT skills cos I can't saved from the 10k he do pay me. I just need another job here in Enugu, I can be managing before this covid 19 will be over.

Bro..... pride is your problem. You should know why you took the job..... is it not temporary? So why bother about what people say? Find time to talk to some executives.... you'll be shocked to learn of the jobs they did. Depends on your post..... use it to make connections .... you are likely in a position to speak to soooo many people who can connect you to jobs. Carry yourself well.... people be watching you.... speak not nor act not like an illiterate... you will stand out and be in a better position to be pulled up the ladder. For someone to know that you are a graduate and can humble yourself to accept such a job tells a whole lot more than you think. Meanwhile... think about what you can do on your own to maintain yourself.

Thank you.

The people I respect the most are those people n hustling jobs like yours. Except for people that drive okada/marwa/micra in Ibadan.

I also know of someone as a security officer in a University and run SSCE, then B.sc , Then M.sc , then PhD and used his contacts in the school to get Job as a Lecturer....

The security was his Beginning of success story!

with 10years of dedication and Commitment, All these academic qualifications are achievable and you will change your story and that of your generations to come.

Same here. There is dignity in labour. I know a security guy in the east, he arranged with his colleagues was put on permanent night. He used the day to go to poly. He was so cheerful that you cannot help but like him. Customers, staff ,lots of ppl liked him and gave him tips. Infact, some staff gave him money to support his education and encourage others to further themselves. He graduated informed the staff and was told during recruitment opening. You can imagine when the 6ppl interviewing you already know how hardworking you are and know your story. He was hired. I have also seen lots of cleaners hired as tellers in banking sector. You just have to know what you want and work towards it, but in all, be cheerful, hard working and have a positive attitude.

my own experience is not a security job, but to be looking after a man's shop, he is into aluminum windows, doors n d rest.
I uses my final yr school fees to buy a laptop and I learnt phone flashing as at that time.guy if I tell u how much I make from that flashing stuff.u go cry.my elder bro way I go him house for abuja.call me one day tell me ify if u de rob people for abuja abeg stop am.i go the give u 20k every month.cos he was working in ecowas.i just smile for my mind.
