I don’t think it’s “rubbish” . People only act the way they know; atleast he brought his ignorance here to be corrected.
You took your challenge well and made the most of it doesn’t mean someone else has the same mind you have or the mental strength to surmount those challenges without asking for help.

The countries you mentioned have a different perception of such jobs because their socio-economic setting is well planned. In Nigeria mechanic sef no get level for most people eye...for yankee to sabi repair car na great job cos it’s well packaged and sold.
The problem is the self respect we don’t have and how we reflect it to others especially those we think we are better than. We don’t have a culture of appreciation for social structure. We only respect people we perceive are doing better than us. Anybody at our service is below us.

He was only trying to be pitied and at the same time discouraging others of accepting security jobs.

Its really unacceptable!

This my thread is just mainly for single men and guys outside there and I would like to share my experience with you guys on what I have undergone and experienced as a Security guard.

To be a security guard is not a job I can advise my enemy to opt for let alone my friend or relation. The job is a regardless one and very disgusting.

As a security guard, you are more or less a beggar in the street, should I say beggar has a little regard more than you.

When people see you, they see nothing in you. Most especially when you're trying to speak to them in English making them to know that you're educated...(laugh..) You just did it wrong, to them it means you are having mental problem.

The image impression of 98% of people on guys who do this job to hustle for their lives rather than involving in criminal practices is that they have no future; is that they cannot make it in their lives; e.t.c.

Since I've started this job when I finished my program in the polytechnic, any lady I made to know about the job I do turns me off later, some said it's a beggars' work.

And currently, I hardly have female friends not to talk of girlfriends or marriage.

Though, I didn't mean to start this job before if not condition, but now I'm planning to quit the job and find another.

Sometimes, I cried in my room, begging God to show me another way.

One of the workers in the place of work that I'm guiding once told me that his dog is better off than me. This is even the person that cannot even compose simple correct English, he said his dog is better than me.

Security guards are not USUALLY RESPECTED anywhere in the whole world,it is now left for you to carve a niche for yourself and display a rare sense of professionalism.
It is then that people will respect you, people take note of the Security guards behavior when they go places, unfortunately the behavior of security guards in Nigeria is not different from that of a begger.
When they are not begging they want to exert their authority over people in other to gain some form of recognition or Respect.
All you need is to do your job dedicatedly and be as professional as you can, your training manual comes in handy to guide you.
I was once a security guard and it's a career that I enjoyed so much, that informed my decision to take another certification in Criminology and Security, all through my day's (2yrs) as security Guards,I can't remember a day someone walk up to me to disrespect me verbally,my carriage won't let them.

From what I've read, you are ashamed of doing what puts food on your table. Many are looking for your type of job to no avail. Remember to keep that I'm a polytechnic graduate nonsense by the corner. What makes you think that you are better or wiser than those who didn't go to school? I'm presently running a PhD programme and that doesn't stop me from hustling in any form, shape or scope. Hustle hard o, forget about girls now and hustle, keep building your resume with interesting skills while at this job, start dropping your upgraded resume like a mad man to any company you see, who knows when your luck would shine?
Some graduates in their skill section would put Microsoft word, excel grin, typing skills, I would just laugh. What happened to I can analyse data using python data science module such as Pandas and then visualization through matplotlib and Bokeh. This wouldn't even take you up to 2-4weeks to master. Upgrade yourself daily, read, read and read.
Can you save some cash and aquire basic shoe making and Pam slippers production machines? Or even attach yourself with a mechanic to learn motor repair or generator repair (Mikano)?
Gracias!

What you are doing is generalization. You are wrong in this. I respect security guards. I hardly have issues with them. I don't think they see themselves as less than beggars. I think this has to do with your person. Maybe you are too proud or expect people too much from people

And the way you say guys not involving in crime, you say it like you are doing people a favour by not committing crime. See, if you commit crime or not, na your life
this is true, most of security guards that I have met are arrogant and rude fools. Unethical from every angle and when people are not disciplined in what they say, the security men get annihilated with insults.

Someone with big dreams will have self esteem issues just like the OP. You think its easy for a person to go thru sch in Nigeria and end up as security guard? How much does some of this security coy pays?

Some of them pay a paltry 17k which is less than a monthly allowance of a corper. How will someone with such income buy food, cloth, soap and transport not to talk of saving to acquire skills.

Very depressing I must say considering other factors like insults, risk and frustrations that comes with the job.

except you know what you doing, private security job will
1. frustrate your life
2. slowly waste your life.
3.kill your self esteem.
4. forget self development.
5. you will be permanently stagnant in life.
with the above disadvantages clearly pointed out, lf you must do the job, have a target in mind, your whole heart should be on achieving your target (this helps you get through the day by day insults and demeaning nature of the job)
if possible be on permanent night duty and use the day time to develop yourself.
For graduates doing this job, let your style speak for you. when I was in service (guard job) lolz, I make sure I don't speak bad/pidgin English to strangers, I look at people straight in the eye and speak firmly, I bought and sew my uniform myself including my boots, starched, ironed and permanently clean ( get 2 or 3 pairs) someone saw me stand out, and referred me to someone else who got me my present job, am not "there" yet but I understand what private security guards go through.

Sorry for feeling that way.

It's in ur hands to make ur life better. Also work on your self esteem. The uniform you wear as a guard doesn't define you or your future.

We are all just different. I personally make friends with every kind of worker and even ask their names.

No human being is lesser than the other, some privileges only place some people at better places.

When I tell people I got to where I was from 10k monthly, they think am one of those motivational speakers. Life has its ups and downs and when you decide to swim out of these issues then you start making progress. I worked in a hotel years back as a waiter and had problem with a customer who poured his whole drink on me. To make issues worst, his stupid gf was even calling me names. When I met the stupid lady at an event after 8 years( I hardly forget the face of these type of people), she did not recognise me, I guess the cars and money changes someone greatly.

1stly there is smtn called stint or temporary job.. Many top celebrities especially abroad and in civil climes have all done it, from farming and carrying animal poo(Manure) to, serving in bars as bartenders, security guards, models etc they are stunt jobs and it doesn’t mean u won’t be better.

2. Why are u looking and bother about what people think about u. The main issues here is ur focus, ur plans, ur steps and actions and Sm good luck.

If u make up ur mind to do anything have a plan and follow it through to the best of ur ability. Anything anybody else thinks or says about u is non off ur business Asfar as I’m concerned.

Why do u care so much about what they think when u know it’s temporal and u have a good plan. Why did u take the job in the 1st place exactly? To get money and save or to get people hype u or congratulate u Then do exactly wat u got the job for and for how long is necessary to get want u consider reasonable then move on with ur journey. These are temporary jobs and that shud be in ur mindset. It’s just a part of ur story why shud u care what people think or say?

Now u want to quit ur job because nobody hype u. Ok.. u probably don’t know why u took this job and maybe ur at ur post forming big boy and trying to famze rather than focus and doing ur work so Ure feeling slighted people are not looking at ur fAce and ur grammar? I don’t think u are a focused person at all. Uve forgotten the purpose and reason u came to work.

To be sincere you are not normal if you are a graduate and you accept 7000 monthly salary... You are a shame to your parents. Even your employee will doubt your degree. My guy if I'm your father I will disown you because I have wasted my money on you. Register as an agbero and make 5k daily. 5k x30 = 150k. Learn driving and earn 50-60k monthly. I'm paying my volunteers 40k monthly and they only go out 3times in a week.
I started making money in secondary school just by repairing calculators for students and teachers,
When I got to high institution, I repair and sell computers, write projects etc.
I have never gone for any job interview and I will never. I look down on my lecturers then because I only measure success by how much cash in a man's bank account.
Op quit that job now except if you are gaining some kind of knowledge with you employee.

My guy it's not about the job it's about the pay. I have seen a civil servant advancing towards a business woman and she refused dating the man, the woman gave in for a bus driver...that time Abuja was doing well with Araba buses., some of the drivers makes nothing less than 15k daily. Do you know how much they pay a professional cleaner abroad? In those countries labour is accorded it's rightful position.

Sad one. There is really no much hope for the Nigerian graduate/youth.

You are not the problem, OP. The people who look down on you are the problem. It is okay if a man is not your choice, but it is very low to put down a man’s hustle. Especially in this generation where delayed gratification is going extinct.

OP, people who understand the concept of hardwork and time, wouldn’t act the way those girls do. Nigerians are very vile creatures on the average. They look down on people doing those jobs you do, cleaners, drivers, security men...etc. Ironically these are the people that make your work easier. They are same people that can mess you up badly.

That is why I always say, the true test of a person’s character isn’t how they treat those above them, it is how they treat those below them. Those people they feel they owe nothing. People they think can amount to nothing.

Try finding something to augment your resources. There are various skills to learn, selfpity won’t get you anywhere.
I guess you are still single why not accept a relationship with him ,then help him rise.should op be talking relationship in this his situation,or working and saving had to rise.we are our own enemy. undecided
