If You've Done This Job Before, Pls Tell Me Your Experience Too

This my thread is just mainly for single men and guys outside there and I would like to share my experience with you guys on what I have undergone and experienced as a Security guard.

To be a security guard is not a job I can advise my enemy to opt for let alone my friend or relation. The job is a regardless one and very disgusting.

As a security guard, you are more or less a beggar in the street, should I say beggar has a little regard more than you.

When people see you, they see nothing in you. Most especially when you're trying to speak to them in English making them to know that you're educated...(laugh..) You just did it wrong, to them it means you are having mental problem.

The image impression of 98% of people on guys who do this job to hustle for their lives rather than involving in criminal practices is that they have no future; is that they cannot make it in their lives; e.t.c.

Since I've started this job when I finished my program in the polytechnic, any lady I made to know about the job I do turns me off later, some said it's a beggars' work.

And currently, I hardly have female friends not to talk of girlfriends or marriage.

Though, I didn't mean to start this job before if not condition, but now I'm planning to quit the job and find another.

Sometimes, I cried in my room, begging God to show me another way.

One of the workers in the place of work that I'm guiding once told me that his dog is better off than me. This is even the person that cannot even compose simple correct English, he said his dog is better than me.

Your experience too is allowed... Thank you.

Don't allow people's opinion of your hardworking get to you, things may not be rosy right now, but remember the story is not yet over, besides you can always use this lemon to make lemonade.

Nigeria has a huge security challenge and you could always carry your job experience one day and maybe startup your own private security outfit and build up your own clientele.

Or you can keep building on your skill set and keep applying for other jobs and you might just get lucky....

My point is don't allow negativity get to you.

PART 1-
I think the last time I replied to someone's post on Nairaland was about 7-8years ago. But after reading yours, I felt to share with you something that might help you.

Take note: a lot of people have replied you with brilliant, practical, and insightful posts, but I will add a little more, and I will segment my reply in 2 parts for easy reading!

My Experience:
I found myself outside Nigeria many years ago, I thought I would secure a high paying job- Na, the only job I could get into was Security Guard.
I was caught in a conundrum; excited about the job but, disappointed it’s a Security Guard Job. I discovered something later on. I need to embrace this job with all my heart and be the best in it.
With that attitude, I gave my best to the Security Guard work. Also, I made sure I had a good relationship with the Living God; by having daily personnel prayer time and Bible reading. You see, I was not playing church, but Genuinely relationship with Christ.

Discovery:
With a positive attitude, hard work; I realized the Security Guard job was the right job for me. Because often the Creator God makes great men or women great, by starting them bottom of the ladder of life. And Security Guard work is amongst the lowest paying and disrespected job in the society today.

You get to learn some of life's most important lessons from the lower vantage point of life and if you can be humble, grow a thick skin for the insults and learn from the ‘ low ladder position,’ then you will be crowned with something bigger in life later.

Breakthrough:

I gave my best and shrugged off the insults, mockery, and disrespect. Mind you, I did passthrough through a lot and a lot of terrible stuff (i.e. threatened with weapons, insulted, physically assaulted, stabbed, called names, faced bullying and cronyism etc.)
But, I continued to do the job and give my best; each time I am at work alone, I began to have so many life-changing ideas, began to set goals. I then started seeing myself as CEO, who was only working as Security Guard now. I also considered my then work as a Security Guard as life training for my future high-position.

Cut a Long Story Short:
With the Ideas I got while working as Security Guard; I set up my own Security Company, wrote a Security Guard Book (first of its kind in this western county by a security Guard), Got Newspapers Interview, Made it to the National TV and got Nominated for an Award.
From all this experience as a Security Guard; I have become a consultant. I now set-up security companies for other individuals and organizations, and I also use all the security experience to start creating Policy documents, Business Plan and other security documents and selling to individuals and established security companies.

PART 2-

Woman:
Look, I can tell you endless stories of my experience, failures and success, but I will stop here. Any Woman who has rejected you because you are a security guard, that woman is not your wife- don’t hold it against them.

The woman that is made as a wife for you will stick by you no matter your occupation. Forget about a relationship, for now, work hard and package yourself first. Example. I met my wife while I was working as a Security Guard. She was working as a Manager in an Award-winning Hospitality Business; she earns many many times the amount of money I earn. I was honest with her from the beginning about what I do (I am just a security guard) my job was never an issue for her, all she saw was me and not my profession, not long after we married, then all the above ‘ breakthrough came.

Bottom Line:
Be proud of what you do; be patient, spend your free time and think what else can I do to have other multiple streams of income. Follow people, contents, blogs or news that challenge you to better yourself, think positively dream big Have a genuine Relationship with Jesus Christ ( also read Ecclesiastes 9:11)

my own experience is not a security job, but to be looking after a man's shop, he is into aluminum windows, doors n d rest. Just yesterday he told me that I am of no use in his shop, the first time I came here, he said that I don't have much things to be doing here, so within my first two weeks of staying in his shop,I had to meet the workers to teach me some of the job like putting of brush, rubber on the glass, coupling, tightening of screws n d rest so that I can be helping out when the need arises. Only for this man to tell me yesterday that I am of no use to him forgetting before the lockdown when i do help out if there is enough work to do and he told my frd that connected me to him that he s tired and needs another person. if not for this covid 19, I should be planning for my nysc now. He talks and shout at me anyhow, as if I am an ssce cert, but I graduated last year from IMT, I studied computer science. I planned to use part of the nysc money to get a fairly used laptop so that I can upgrade my IT skills cos I can't saved from the 10k he do pay me. I just need another job here in Enugu, I can be managing before this covid 19 will be over.
God will show u the way ...

Completed my HND in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, with on the job experiences in industrial automation.went further to acquire another skill in instrumentation and control.I had the dream of securing a better job after my nysc, but non was available ofter over a year search. Dammm, will i die of hunger, how will I pay my bills? Mind you,I was still living with my parents, eating mama thank you as a graduate.
I had to take up a job in a security firm as a guard, at least get something by the end of the month. The insult I have received from the job can reduce the confidence of a man ,we are seen as outcast, a no body,a failure in life. I could remember vividly a contractor that came to our office to carry out some maintenance job, i had to make him go through the modus oparandi of the organisation, but he refuses. That was the day i recieved the worst bashing of my life. I gave him a smile and move on.i didnt allow the incident wear me down.
Still looking out for better opportunities, man no go remain for the job for ever.

Op you have 2 problems and this is very common with majority of people doing security job:

1) as a result of ego you are unwilling to be proud of a security guard job which is the only legitimate job putting food on your table and paying your bills for now.

2) you have a very low self-esteem and a very negative mental outlook on life.

You need to amend your ways in these areas. Be proud of any legitimate job you do no matter how lowly it may appear to people. Work on your self-esteem and learn to see things from positive angle.

Remember the world reflects your own thoughts back to you.

People can only look down on you if you look down on yourself.

People will respect you if you respect yourself. People will like you of you like yourself. People will value you if you value yourself. Also always remember to live by golden rules - do unto others as you would like others do unto you. If you need love show love to people. If you need respect give everybody respect. In essence, what you give to the world is what the world will give back to you.

The job you do is not the problem you are the problem. Work on yourself.

The funniest thing is I don't look down on security guards, though I can't date them. I mean, you should aspire to be more in life. And instead of looking for who to date, you should be concerned about improving your situation.

I see security guards as people who hold power cef. They can either allow or prevent your entrance into a place. Probably if you guys tried to wear clean uniforms, (sew a new uniform if the one they gave you is worn out), wear a tinted sunglass, and put on a serious face, no one will look down on you.

Also, take care of your skin so it will shine through the uniform. Your carriage is another thing. Don't walk like a slave, walk like a boss. If you can gym and get muscles, all the better. My two cents.

Shout out to the security guards at former Diamond Bank, Ilupeju. They always made me feel welcome whenever I went to the bank. I wonder where they are now.

My brother, please don't be discouraged. It is our see finish mentality. And it's not just security guards, any body perceived to be below you is looked down at in our country. Everyone is looking for whom to oppress. Even if you become a millionaire tomorrow, billionaires will still look down at you. Condition your mind to be satisfied with what you have and where you are, while striving for better. You don't need to prove anything to anyone as long as you are not begging for bread, you are okay just the way you are.

There is money in security if you take it as your career path. There is nothing wrong in being a security guard. It is what you make out of the situation that distinguish you. I started working as a security guard in 2011 after losing my call center job. Yes, people regarded guards as low life, downtrodden, uneducated idiots, moronic etc but they did not know that some of us are far more educated, brilliant and intelligent than them. I don't need to prove a point to anybody while discharging my duties. One of the main reason they detest security guards is because we are there to stop them from doing what is illegal. I later enrolled at Unilag for Advanced Diploma in Security Operations and management. I also did UK HSE level 1-3, registered with ASIS (American Society for Industrial Security) the world security governing body for security professionals. I enrolled as a specialist member of International Risk Management, I did many online personal development courses ranging from Cyber Security, Forensic psychology, Forensic Investigation, Military Ethics and project management. I am an expert in security systems and preparing for my CPP this November. I live in a decent apartment, have a modest car and a beautiful family.

We leave in a society where people stigmatise people for what they do, legally to put food on their table.
It's a society where people celebrate unexplained wealth making others feel belittled of themselves

Just in case you are among those who lockdown on others cuz of what they do and because u are doing better than them
I will advise you change your attitude
Honour all men irregardless.
Just because you have a good job doesn't mean you are better than anyone
Many people can play the role u play in your work place when given the opportunity to do it (some even more better than u do)

Never abuse opportunity
