This my thread is just mainly for single men and guys outside there and I would like to share my experience with you guys on what I have undergone and experienced as a Security guard.

To be a security guard is not a job I can advise my enemy to opt for let alone my friend or relation. The job is a regardless one and very disgusting.

As a security guard, you are more or less a beggar in the street, should I say beggar has a little regard more than you.

When people see you, they see nothing in you. Most especially when you're trying to speak to them in English making them to know that you're educated...(laugh..) You just did it wrong, to them it means you are having mental problem.

The image impression of 98% of people on guys who do this job to hustle for their lives rather than involving in criminal practices is that they have no future; is that they cannot make it in their lives; e.t.c.

Since I've started this job when I finished my program in the polytechnic, any lady I made to know about the job I do turns me off later, some said it's a beggars' work.

And currently, I hardly have female friends not to talk of girlfriends or marriage.

Though, I didn't mean to start this job before if not condition, but now I'm planning to quit the job and find another.

Sometimes, I cried in my room, begging God to show me another way.

One of the workers in the place of work that I'm guiding once told me that his dog is better off than me. This is even the person that cannot even compose simple correct English, he said his dog is better than me.

No condition is permanent. Tag along. Set a target for yourself while on the job, a timeline on quitting is a motivational force on its own. Do u plan to do 6 months ,1 year or 2. Set a time and allow it to tick. A decades time when u look back at ur stint as a security man, I bet u ; u will laugh and smile and use that opportunity to guide the upcoming ones that all that glitters is not Gold as u have once passed thru similar circumstances.

It depends on the organization you work with.

We see everybody as one big family in my organization and our security guys earn fat salaries.

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all thy might. You never know who God could use to bless you at your duty post. Some years back, a young Lady was employed as a maid in a house. You and I know how people treat maids, but this lady will do all her job and much more cheerfully. One day, her master had a visitor who spent about two weeks with the family. All through the visitors stay, the maid was at her beck and call. Do this for me, get me that etc was a regular thing. Never for once did she complain or fail in her duty. A day before the guest was due to depart was when the maid knew the guest was from the USA. She got to know when her madam called to ask if she will like to travel to the US to work as baby sitter for her guest. Long story short, that was how she relocated to the US where she eventually furthered her studies and became very successful. Today, she is the shining light of her family. Why did the guest ask to take her to the US? She saw how hardworking and obedient she was. Don't be depressed bout how people treat you but shake off such treatments and use such as stepping stone to greater things.

If we truly implement minimum pay and make it and offence to underpay security guards and domestic staff such as cooks and maids Nigerians will be forced to give them more regards!

You can get respect doing ANY job in the world.
First you have to respect yourself.
Make sure your dressing is always neat and sharp and you eat a lot of vegetables OR drink a lot of water to keep your skin fresh.
Like the person above said; use good perfumes.
If you can perfume oil that lasts 24+ hours on the skin it’ll be even better.
MOST IMPORTANTLY Find time to work out a lot too so you can gain an intimidating bulk.
People will recognize you more and know that you are better than where you are right now. Some might approach you with better opportunities.
Nobody likes seeing a big man in small trousers.

Resist the urge to overly relate with people around that can’t think above this current level. Don’t engage them in rubbish talks because they will slowly influence you to remain at this level.
Always have a vision of what you want your life to be. Don’t allow anything distract that mental picture.
Always maintain an elite mindset and brush off whatever people have to say... infact laugh when they say it and internalize the pain to think of better opportunities you can take advantage of.

Forget women for now bro. Like who like you, anybody wey look down on you cos you be gateman, disregard them. Most women especially the educated ones won’t want anything to do with you....because we have a 3rd world View of security guards. (Which is why the first point is most important).

If you have a lot of time off work you can find a martial arts class to enroll in, or hey there is YouTube you can practice on your own.... it will help you sharpen your focus and always maintain a razor sharp mind...it’ll also help elevate your mind from your small immediate environment.

From what I've read, you are ashamed of doing what puts food on your table. Many are looking for your type of job to no avail. Remember to keep that I'm a polytechnic graduate nonsense by the corner. What makes you think that you are better or wiser than those who didn't go to school? I'm presently running a PhD programme and that doesn't stop me from hustling in any form, shape or scope. Hustle hard o, forget about girls now and hustle, keep building your resume with interesting skills while at this job, start dropping your upgraded resume like a mad man to any company you see, who knows when your luck would shine?
Some graduates in their skill section would put Microsoft word, excel , typing skills, I would just laugh. What happened to I can analyse data using python data science module such as Pandas and then visualization through matplotlib and Bokeh. This wouldn't even take you up to 2-4weeks to master. Upgrade yourself daily, read, read and read.
Can you save some cash and aquire basic shoe making and Pam slippers production machines? Or even attach yourself with a mechanic to learn motor repair or generator repair (Mikano)?

Am not being proud, but there are some jobs I won't do in my life; security and driver jobs. Even if they collect millions as payment, the stigma and underrating are always there.

I was once like you bro. It is bad and hard experience, one of things I will never forget in life.

Back then, I was posted to work with the head of civil service in my state, I was happy in the first place. To be posted or attached to head of civil service in my state.

I hope to get or secure good job through him, one day, he called me, asked my qualifications. I was glad to answered him that I had B. Tech from one of Federal University in the country with good grade sir.

He latter asked for my CV, I gladly present it the following morning. He was happy, to see it.

You know what surprised me, he asked me to become his permanent security man. That was last day I had joy working with him.

To cut the story short, the following morning, I went to the company head office to drop their uniform. That was the last day, I worked as a security guide.

Sometimes decisions taken listening to what people say or would say are mostly wrong but when that decision is from your innerman, be proud of what u r doing but give room for development, fix urself in that field u r trained for in school, run short courses with joy, talk less and work on urself, doll out more smiles without expectation of gifts, do ur job and be happy. u will appreciate it later. The same guys who treats like shits don't have same beginning, never compare urself. Turn insults to jokes while quietly developing urself. one thing about the job is that most steer into space for hours doing nothing, life is timing, the more time spent steering into space, the less irrelevant u feel. Make use of free hours seriously for self development, keep ur target at heart.

Well well well spoken op...i can relate...just resumed somewhere here in kwara state last week as a security guard and i must tell you,it's not easy....as am typing nw am on 24 hours shift,which will end tomorrow morning.....people do look down on us but me?i dont give a Bleep bout them....and sometimes it has do with the way we present ourselves...one of my colleagues here was disgracead on monday because he demanded for money from one of the contractors handling a project at my place of work here...well that is what i can't and won't do and any time am off duty,am off to do bricklaying.............so dear op,forget whatever anybody is saying and focus....the tide will soon turn in our favor.... You are not the only one experiencing this....just man up and be dilligent....at least the hustle is legit...success is ours

Immediately after my Nysc was looking for what to do, it was actually a crude experienced and was unable to find a job. later got employed by one company as a sales rep and a year later left the job due to its pay and difficulty in nature. From there got another job as a teacher. I was made to teach all the subjects in both primary 5and 6 due to a lack of teachers or the school unable to retain its teachers because of the salary. Staying there thought me so many things but with patience and focus exhibited by me with the help of God. I worked with the Federal Government with a good salary not married anyway.
