Nigerian Army Secretly Trying Soldier Who Criticised Service Chiefs..

The Nigerian Army is secretly trying a soldier, Mohammed Abdullahi, for making ‘unguarded comments’ on social media about the tenures of the current service chiefs, a military source has revealed.

The staff sergeant, according to the source, was accused of critising the extension of the tenures of the service chiefs, saying it is “slowing morale in the rank and file of the forces.”

The source said Mr Abdullahi, with service number 97NA/44/315, is facing disciplinary action following the comments.

The service chiefs include the Chief of Defence Staff, Gabriel Olonisakin; Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai; Chief of Naval Staff, Ibok Ibas, and the Chief of Air Staff, Sadiq Abubakar.

The Army Intelligence Corp (NAIC) has investigated the soldier’s comments and its findings will form the basis of the trial, the official briefed on the case told PREMIUM TIMES.

The source informed PREMIUM TIMES that the investigation of the soldier was authorised by Mr Buratai in February this year.

The soldier is being accused of flouting the Nigerian military’s 2018 policy on the use of social media, which prohibits certain conducts by military personnel on social media, the source added.

Many soldiers have reportedly been punished under that policy in the past.

PREMIUM TIMES learnt that Mr Abdullahi’s social media comment irked the senior military officers, who moved to sanction him.

When contacted about the matter, spokesperson of the Nigeria Army, Sagir Musa, said he was not aware of the matter and could not comment on it until he saw the document PREMIUM TIMES referenced.

“I’m not aware of this! But if you have any document or evidence indicating there is such development kindly forward it to me to facilitate or assist in finding out so that I can brief you accordingly,” he said.

PREMIUM TIMES has seen part of a document that referenced Mr Abdullahi’s social media comment on tenures of service chief and the NAIC investigation that was authorised by the COAS.

The referenced document sighted by PREMIUM TIMES is not being made public, because doing so could reveal the identity of the source.

Soldier’s grouse

The soldier’s post reportedly criticised the continued stay in office of the service chiefs.

The current service chiefs are the longest-serving set since the return of democracy in Nigeria in 1999. This has angered many who believe such top officers should not spend more than two years, or at most four in office.

President Muhammadu Buhari appointed them on July 13, 2015, with the general expectations that their tenures would end in two years or thereabouts.

It was expected by many that by then, most of them who were then nearing the end of their military careers would have retired. But that turned out not to be the case.

The Armed Forces of Nigeria’s Harmonised Terms and Conditions of Service (HTACOS) is clear about the tenures of the service chiefs and the prerogatives of the President and Commander in Chief in extending their tenures.

Section 09:08 of the HTACOS, also known as ‘official service order in the military’ states that, “An officer appointed to the substantive appointment of the Chief of Defence Staff, Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Naval Staff and the Chief of Air Staff will hold the appointment for a continuous period of two years. The appointment could be extended for another two years from the date of expiration of the initial two-year period.”

In 2017 when the current service chiefs’ two-years tenures expired, President Buhari exercised his powers as enshrined in the HTACOS, to extend their stay in office for another two years which was expected to finally expire by 2019.

Also, at the time President Buhari extended their tenures in 2017, some of the service chiefs had clocked their compulsory retirement age of 35 years in service.

Their continued stay has no doubt created ripples within the armed forces and the public as the military continues to battle an unending insurgency in the North-east and calls intensify that the officials be replaced.

Mr Abdullahi’s post reportedly highlighted how military personnel were being shortchanged as per progression in ranks.

‘Long tenures’

Chief of Defence Staff, Abayomi Olonisakin
The current Chief of Defence Staff, Mr Olonisakin, an army general, enrolled into the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) as a member of the 25th Regular Course, and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1981. This means he was supposed to have clocked 35 years of service in 2016.

The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Mr Ete-Ibas, got inducted into NDA as a member of the 26th Regular Course in June 1979 and got commissioned as a sub-lieutenant on January 1, 1983. He was to have retired from service in January 2018.

Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar,
Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Mr Abubakar, an air marshall, enlisted into the Nigerian Air Force as a member of the Cadet Military Training Course (CMTC 5) in November 1979. He was supposed to have retired since 2014.

Disenchanted personnel?

The source said many military personnel have continued to lament the continued stay in office of these top soldiers, claiming it affects the career growth of younger officers.

The source, who requested for non-attribution for fear of being sanctioned, said the NAIC had concluded the investigation on Mr Abdullahi “who may be undergoing a military trial and subsequent disciplinary measures as recommended in the NAIC report.”

The source said the NAIC also recommended that stiffer measures be put in place to curb such actions of ‘misconduct’ from other officers in the future.

The source said all commanding officers across various army formations and divisions had, in early May, received a directive from the COAS as recommended by NAIC. PREMIUM TIMES is yet to authenticate this claim.

The directive reportedly reminded personnel “of the need to imbibe the Nigeria Army core values as contained in traditions, customs and ethics of the Nigeria Army.”

EID-EL-FITR: CAS CELEBRATES SALAH WITH FRONTLINE TROOPS, CHARGES THEM NOT TO GIVE BANDITS BREATHING SPACE

In keeping with the tradition of celebrating festive period with frontline troops to boost their morale and foster comradeship, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar today, 24 May 2020, visited 213 Forward Operation Base (213 FOB), Katsina to celebrate Eid-el-Fitr with the frontline troops of Operation HADARIN DAJI. The CAS who was represented by the Air Officer Commanding, Special Operations Command (AOC SOC), Air Vice Marshal Charles Ohwo, charged the troops not to give bandits any breathing space. He said they must continue to work in synergy with sister Services and other security agencies to ensure that the capacity of the bandits to carry out attacks on innocent citizens is drastically reduced. According to him, “It has become imperative that we do not give these miscreants any breathing space and as well reduce their capacity to carry out attacks on innocent citizens. It is in furtherance of this that we have deployed more platforms and 60 Special Forces (SF) personnel to support the Operation in the Northwest”.

Air Marshal Abubakar remarked that wining and dinning with troops in mission areas was particularly dear to him. “This has become a tradition since my assumption of Office as it serves as an avenue to foster comradeship as well as ease the tension the operational environment creates, whilst reassuring you of our commitment to continuously cater for your welfare and provide the much-needed support to prosecute your missions”, he said. He noted that, in the last four and half years, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), had taken giant strides by inducting new platforms and reactivating grounded ones. He stated further that the the Service has also trained many pilots, engineers, technicians as well as Regiment and SF personnel. The training, he said, is in line with his vision to build the capacity of the Service to enable it effectively and efficiently tackle current and emerging security challenges. The CAS noted that a lot was at stake in the war against banditry and kidnapping. “We must not allow ourselves to be taken unawares. I therefore enjoin all NAF personnel to remain displined and not to relent in their efforts towards the safety and security of our citizens”, he added.

While thanking the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Muhammadu Buhari, for his continued support to the NAF, the CAS enjoined the troops to take responsibility in the fight against COVID-19. He said the NAF has provided them with face masks that must be worn at all times. He charged them to maintain physical/social distancing in public gatherings and strictly adhere to the guidelines and protocols as issued by the Federal Government and Headquarters NAF, including regular washing of hands with soap and use of hand sanitizers, whilst endeavouring to educate their families on the dangers of the virus.

The CAS had earlier feted NAF troops deployed to Gusau in Zamfara State, Agatu in Benue State, Lafia in Nasarawa State and Gembu in Taraba State, where he appreciated the gallant efforts of the personnel towards ensuring that communities where they are deployed, and Nigerians at large, are secured and able to go about their lawful businesses without fear or intimidation. He commended the Air Component Commander Operation HADARIN DAJI, the Commanders of 207 Quick Response Group Gusau and 213 FOB Katsina as well as as the Commanding Officers of the Quick Response Wings (QRWs) in Agatu, Lafia and Gembu, along with their officers and airmen/airwomen for their conduct and high level of professionalism in ongoing operations. He also thanked the Government and people of the host States and Communities for their hospitality and cooperation with the NAF.

I would prefer we bought frigates than corvettes as our engineers are slowly building towards corvette size.Local corvette sized ships will reduce yearly navy maintenance budgets and free up foreign exchange to shop and maintain frigate sized ships while enlarging the navy with the local corvettes.

SDB 2/3 sized ships can be missile armed with about 2 missiles for coastal defence in future designs. What we need is more blue sea competence.

the Drones not participating in Airstrike doesn't mean they aren't operational.
Are you still saying the Super Pumas aren't operational.

I'm sure it's only ISR they'll carryout for now because of the cost of Missiles.

Most of them are still kids who haven't seen life at all. Coupled with too much video games, that's where the obsession with artillery and firearms comes from. Coz it beats my imagination how someone will spend his whole day posting pictures of tanks and guns when he's supposed to be doing something more productive.

The question should be why u joined the army in the first place..

To many of this generation, being a soldier is what they see in Hollywood movies(and trust me, no army is as good as Hollywood army not even the US), many is for the power, prestige, influence, source of livelihood and some for the real sacrifices. Meanwhile, many along the line later get to understand what it means to be a soldier.

Saying fighting for our nation isnt worth it is a slap on the faces of heroes like Col. Abu Ali and so many of our heroes who have died and still fighting defending our ground..

Though we all know that they are alot of lapses in the military but if you are waiting for the time when everything would be Okay before you think it's worth it or sing their praises then I think you're going to wait forever.

Supporting our soldiers is the least we can do and that's what we do on this thread..An ordinary individual cannot just wake up on a peaceful morning and say he wants to put his life on the line for the people he may not know and for those he will never even know, it can only take people who have given themselves to something bigger to sign up for this.

I'll suggest the thread gets killed same with the sister thread. The mods need to lock it up because 95% of what is posted here is just propaganda. You're only showing the public what you want them to know and what not they're supposed to know. That's the reason many of them will never support anything from Sahara , any investigative journalism about the military or even viral videos of soldiers lamenting about poor treatment and welfare. They will never show you the part where Nigerian soldiers are poorly equiped or poorly fed, they'll never show you the part where injured soldiers are abandoned to their fate and allowed to suffer, they'll never show you the part where the top officers are embezzling money and building houses in Dubai and Monaco with the money that was meant to be used for procurement of weapons. All these and many more are happening yet they want the soldiers to remain silent, stop lamenting and be courageous in the battle field. To me, the purpose of this thread is meaningless. It needs to be locked up and deleted.

Nigerian army dont need this kind of coward , social media starlet soldiers . I hope they will make an example of him . this kind of video is more effective than all boko haram videos propaganda .

I see that there are too many photos of Nigerian soldiers on social networks with their faces uncovered and sometimes in operation . in algerian army for soldiers taking pictures is forbidden specially during operation, it's direct the prison for you . only official military media can release pics and videos . or only during exposition for public and even when some photo leaks, they blur their faces so as not to have problems

information warfare is very important against guerrillas, terrorists and even in classic wars

I hate to say it but all these vids are a direct reflection of a military subculture lacking control and discipline. The brass have specifically called for an end to these videos several times and they're still uploaded to yt without any disguise. Its a no brainer-ofc the lower ranks may be frustrated by lack of action via normal channels.

Cowards die many times before their death.

It is the same everyday Nigerian that walks in the street, soldiering on and making the most of his opportunities. The market woman who goes to the market by 6am, and leaves the market by 8pm.

Not cowards like you that run away when the going gets tough.

Yeah you're right. Many of them buy their food to eat because most times, they're being served 3 pcs of cabin biscuit and a sachet of cowbell chocolate for the whole day.

On a good day, they get tuwo that a stray dog will even reject.
