It is permitted in Islam to sit up if the person cannot sit in the usual position, especially older people.

Sitting on the floor is difficult for old people, sitting is not the problem, getting up after 30mins sitting is a war between the person and his waist, I used to assist my grandma that year, may her souls rest in peace
