NIGERIA
A multinational state, Nigeria is inhabited by more than 250 ethnic groups with over 500 distinct languages all identifying with a wide variety of cultures. The three largest ethnic groups are the Hausa–Fulani in the north, Yoruba in the west, and Igbo in the east; comprising over 60% of the total population. The official language of Nigeria is English, chosen to facilitate linguistic unity at the national level. Nigeria is divided roughly in half between Christians, who live mostly in the southern part of the country, and Muslims, who live mostly in the north. Nigeria has respectively, the fifth-largest Muslim population in the world and the sixth-largest Christian population in the world, with the constitution ensuring freedom of religion.A minority of the population practice religions indigenous to Nigeria, such as those native to the Igbo and Yoruba ethnicities.

India (Hindi: Bhārat), officially the Republic of India (Hindi: Bhārat Gaṇarājya),[20] is a country in South Asia. It is the second-most populous country, the seventh-largest country by area, and the most populous democracy in the world. Bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the southwest, and the Bay of Bengal on the southeast, it shares land borders with Pakistan to the west;[e] China, Nepal, and Bhutan to the north; and Bangladesh and Myanmar to the east. In the Indian Ocean, India is in the vicinity of Sri Lanka and the Maldives; its Andaman and Nicobar Islands share a maritime border with Thailand and Indonesia.

Here Are Problems I think Are Plaguing These Countries...

Multi Ethnicity/Heterogeneous Societies:
These 3 Countries Are very diverse along Religious, Ethnic, Language, Racial, Ideological lines...
Its very difficult to build a progressive society when you add these differences amongst people with democracy and capitalism...
The Politicians tend to pounce on these differences to get vote....
We all see the issues in India between Hindus and Muslims.. Between Northern and Southern Indians....Coupled with the caste system and Racial diversities..
Nigeria has more than 200 ethnic groups, different languages ,with most of the languages having different dialects...
Animosity between the Muslims and Christains...The three Main Regions distrust each other ....
Same Thing.with Brazil having characteristics of Nigeria and India..
..my conclusion is that it's very difficult to build an inclusive society with these multiple divisions in a country...

Corruption:
These 3 Countries are plagued with corruption.. corruption is a fabric of the Societies of these countries...
Brazil has had former presidents embroiled in Scandals...
Corruption and mismanagement is so normal in Nigeria...
Corruption has led to so much close contact between politicians and the private sector... the Politicians are key stakeholders in the capitalist private sector and would rather put profits ahead of the people...
How is it imaginable that in 2020 , Nigeria does not have stable power supply..... it's very shocking and the height of the glamorous corruption in Nigeria...

Crime...
With Corruption and weakend institutions....this leads to a private and public sector that is not accountable to the public, high unemployment, lack of govt innovation.. bureaucracy..poor business friendly environments all stiffles the growth of the economy...and when this happens , surge in crime lays in wait..

India has one of the highest rape cases in the world..
Nigeria is something else..Human life is not valued..you fear the security agents, you also fear the criminals..
Brazil is a drug el Dorado...some areas are even controlled by gangs as we saw on TV ,where gangs enforced lockdown measures in some areas...
How would Tourism flourish with high crime
How would FDI flow in bountifully with high crimes...

Weak Judiciary..
These 3 Countries have very weak Judiciaries which is mostly out of reach of the common man...this leads to citizens being exploited because the lack knowledge of the law...the Judiciaries are also influenced by the other arms of government..

Weak Public Institutions:
Public Institutions in these countries are notoriously slow and inefficient..
Police is a typical example..
The Corrupt Politicians purposely Do not check the excesses of the security forces and law enforcement because they need the backing of these institutions to stay in power and quell dissent..

Brain Drain:
Nigeria and India is grossly affected by this brain drain which is due to the unsavory environment for people who are extremely gifted..
Imagine we have a prosperous Nigerian society and the vast amount of Nigerian professionals and scholars outside are contributing heavily to national development....

There are several factors impeding these countries...feel free to add yours and mention any other country that has enormous potentials but nothing to show for it..

All those things you mentioned are not a nations potential.

If the peoples' heads are empty, the nation they live in is like a car with no engine that has no potential at all.

My glasses are faulty. They made me read "potential" into your topic. Nice thread though. It shows what our potential might be.

I do not think my parents can be blamed for my failures. If they did not plan for me, I could have learnt from other places and planned for my own future, unless you are indirectly blaming me for making my parent's labours vain, in which case, I am guilty as charged and should repent and make a plan least my children become even more useless than I seem to be.

I shed tears for Venezuela... A country with such huge oil reserves... Venezuela is a bad example of when corruption mixes with socialism and dictatorship...
I really hope Maduro is ousted and something good happens to that country... Their health care system is on the brink of collapse,..
Venezuela is a sad story

The drug industry has ruined Mexico...
There are some areas of Mexico that are not under govt control... Areas managed my cartels..
Mexico has so much potentials which will be harnessed when their leaders are truly ready to stop the drug trade

Your number one reason is very concrete and I have often thought of it myself, that is why most European countries and east Asian as well as Arabian countries seems to be progressive because they are ethnically and religiously homogeneous, infact if you list out the most advanced countries in the world they are almost entirely homogeneous or even a few heterogeneous ones like France had their borders formed naturally through wars, conquest and empire building similar to oyo, Benin and sokoto caliphate not by outsiders like they did to Africa. Even examples like Belgium and Switzerland have a perfect system of confederation among themselves and at best are a confederation of 5 ethnic groups. I personally blame the Europeans because before coming to Africa they had and understood perfectly well how a nation state should look like. I begin to wonder if they designed African states to fail and perpetually depend on them.
The few successful African states are the most homogenous or should I say least heterogeneous on the continent like Egypt and the other Arab countries of the maghreb. South Africa being another example with only 9 ethnic nationalities who are very much related to each other one way or the other just like edoid, igboid , yoruboid or idomoid state or a little bit more complex at least a very far cry from the mad house we call Nigeria

But looking at your list, Brazil is not actually heterogeneous. Infact, they are the largest Catholic country in the world, most of them speak Brazilian Portuguese as a native tongue. Forget the favelas only very few countries outside of the tripod (Western Europe, north America(Canada and USA), Japan) can stand them

Nice contribution buddy...
Its amazing what you see in Europe... And something peculiar i ve noticed is the use of parliamentary system of govt in European countries with multi ethnicity... It fits perfectly as most of the factions have a party representing them in parliament...
Yes Brazil is the least heterogeneous of the other two countries.. Where Brazil is mostly reeling is from its racial and ideological factions( right and left wing)..

Something to add why African countries with Nigeria in focus have failed is the presidential system of govt...
The executive arms are not properly checked by the legislature and the judiciary..
This 4 years tenure is a joke because the incoming government will uproot majority of the things the previous govt has done leading to lack of continuity and planning..
Look at the Europeans.. The prime Minister stays for a long time.. And even if the prime Minister losses election or steps down..one way or the other the footprints of the PM remains in the govt coz the PM would still be a member of parliament...
The executive wields too much power and influence in Nigeria... This is one of issues holding Nigeria down
