South Africa now has 29,240 coronavirus cases after a spike of 1 837 in a single day. This is the highest daily record ever recorded in the country.

The Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has also announced there are 34 new deaths bringing the total to 611.

The huge spike comes just days before the country further eases the strict nationwide lockdown on Monday.

For the first time, the minister also revealed that a “large number” of those infected and who have died from Covid-19 in SA were black.

He said that there had been requests for racial data for infections and deaths, but that this information was not readily available because this is not how it was collected.

However, he said that the data available showed that the black population was the most affected.

“And therefore we do understand that a large number of the people who are patients and who have succumbed from the infection [Covid-19] are largely from the black population of our country,” he said.

There are conspiracy theories that black people are immune to the virus - and that's why the continent is the least affected. But in this case, it was political pressure because Julius Malema's Party, the EFF, is strong-arming the government to put more resources in black areas. The government has been dodging this question.

Stupid mindset, I know. But u should go through some of the earlier threads when covid was just starting out in Nigeria. You'll be shocked at the denialism and conspiracies.

SA infections have been proven to come from essential workers and the retail sector - especially after the lockdown was implemented.

This ignorance is something very common among blacks not only in sa, Nigeria but even among African Americans.

Blacks generally need to be pro active in any situation, we are mostly the cause of our misfortune.

We need to change this. But with that said most black people have complied - we should applaud that. It's the bad apples that give us a bad name.

Ignorance? Guess not. For me it is sheer stupidity. Ignorance would suggest that the blacks do not know Covid-19 is dangerous and the need to adhere to safety measures put in place. I don't think the blacks are ignorant of the fact that there is a ravaging pandemic.

What is at play is a situation where though they are aware but chose to live in self denial and thus live recklessly. That is STUPIDITY. Can it happen in Nigeria? The increasing voices screaming that the pandemic is a scam, it is audio are so loud here that they offend the sensibility of those who use their head. The game is not over yet, the world after all tallied the highest number of new cases in any 24hr yesterday!

we blacks cant obey simple instructions oo.. cover ur nose we wont, stay inside house we wont, observe social distancing we wont...the funniest part of it is that many of us protect mouth with the mask leaving the nose unprotected. i pity some people. if dem won know what's up make dem ask president Trump about wetin the thing don do for US. Well said bro. It's not just here.On twitter I happened to check up on some countries covid updates and I was shocked at the comments, not different from what's happening here and other countries of the world. I guess we're just tired of covid overall
