DelphiOracle:
good idea. The big names in sport and those in govt should meet and discuss this. The scheme will be for those who have played for the national team consistently at least for two years.
Very necessary!

The children of those who served their fatherland(fallen heroes, retired civil servant and pensioniers) saw how their parents were neglected.so,how do you expect these children to be faithful, loyal and honest to their country.nigeria, government preaches what they never practice.

They should stop all this nonsense.

Where does this stop?

Who exactly deserves these handouts? The players? Their next of kin or any member of family who comes out of the woodwork?

It's like Emmanuel Adebayor'e relatives asking government of Togo for palliatives when Adebayor is no more.

Think about it.

NFF should do something about this ASAP
Here is one of the household name in Nigeria football.
Since the NFF started this palliative thingy, they should expect more of this in coming days.
They shouldn't be selective in their palliative.

The labour of our heroes past shall not be in vain.
Let's respect our National Anthem by making our heroes turn and smile in their graves.

God bless Nigeria.

You've said it all.
END OF THREAD.

Mudasiru Lawal, Aloysious Atuegbu (Best Nigerian mid fielder) ever, Segun Odegbami, Okoronwanta, Uwem Ekarika, Reuben Agboola (my lookalike grin). These guys inspired me back then to start playing football. From Osjack to Abuede youth academy to Railway FC and finally First Bank FC. Good 'ol days. Sad that Nigerians forget too quickly and don't take care of their players.
Brother pippimp, you know your football and have made my day.

This is the best central midfield pairing I myself have ever seen in world football (i.e Alhaji and Blockbuster).

Ndidi and Etebo, are however, running them very close.

He failed to travel with the squad because of one foolish Polytechnic Examination.

Damn!!

Who School epp?
They were the pioneers of the super eagles we see today. They played for the passion and for fun cos then football was not a big business as it it today. It is even possible a teacher was earning more than a footballer then. I guess he had plans to graduate and start looking for work in oil coy. How time changes! Currently , an oil coy worker will be praying to have a son who is an international footballer.

A lot of people wouldn't understand the gravity of this because of the changing times but an idea of how good Ekarika was can be seen by the fact that even when Leventis United started bringing in superstars, he kept his place in the team.

Very smart player as well. It is painful when you see certain players lately wearing the Nation Team shirt regularly and knowing that a player like Ekarika who was so much better than them didn't get the chance because of the caliber of players we had then in the country.

I hope that going forward, some form of insurance scheme would be incorporated in the sports world to avoid stories that touch.
It beats my imagination how our superstars die dirt poor leaving nothing for their families.
Financial education plus compulsory insurance really needs to be inculcated in our sportsmen.
I hope the sports ministry come to their aid.
in the 70s to mid 90s the money u see in football was not like what you have now. Inflation rate where not as high back then And most of those players where bread winners for their families.

The sad truth is since footballers marry late. They spend the money they made during the prime of their career helping family members who will never think or caring for their children when they are gone.

Uwem has family members in the States , UK etc, this are people he helped why can't they assist his kids.

It's a pity

Uwem is not an average NigerianThat man work so hard and served this country his kids deserve the best.

By the way Akwa United under the ownership of the Akwa ibom government are still owing him over 20 million Naria as a Coach and no body is talking about it

What killed our local league in the 90s?
