Acura TLX second generation: new engines and platform, and a pillow in the form of a baseball glove “Four-door” marked the return of the Type S series – with this prefix, the Honda sub-brand used to release its “charged” models. Mid-size sedan Acura TLX entered the US market in 2014, three years later the model experienced serious restyling. Not so long ago, it became known that Acura abandoned the successor of the RLX, as consumer demand gradually goes to crossovers. However, as we see, this did not prevent the Japanese company from developing a new TLX, despite a noticeable decline in the segment. So, last year, the car sold 26 548 units in the United States, which is 12.8% less than a year earlier. And this figure is still greater than that of competitors Infiniti Q50 (25 987 units, -25.2%) and Lexus IS (14 920 units, -34.9%). The car received a different pentagonal radiator grille (its design differs depending on the version), LED head optics, the shape of which has become narrower, the front bumper with three air intakes. The exhaust pipes located on the sides are noticeable on the rear (they are double on the left and right on the Type S version), a spoiler on the trunk lid, and again narrower tail lights. 18-inch wheels are now offered as the base wheels (the first generation has an inch less), the top version is equipped with 20-inch ones. The “second” Acura TLX was based on a new platform: instead of MacPherson struts, the front suspension received double wishbones and the “multi-link” at the rear (adaptive shock absorbers are optionally available). The length of the new generation sedan is 4943 mm, which is 74 mm longer than its predecessor. The distance between the axes also increased (by 94 mm) to 2870 mm. During the change of generations, the boot volume increased by 8 liters (up to 382 liters). A new leather-trimmed steering wheel appeared in the cabin, and the dashboard remained analogous, but a 7-inch screen was added to it (a projection screen is optionally available). The diagonal display of the multimedia system is 10.2 inches. The center console now has a wireless charger for smartphones. The decoration (depending on the version) uses leather, wood and aluminum parts. It’s more convenient for the eyes: Nissan Ariya crossover will receive a horizontal curved display The Japanese company explained why the car, which will become the electro-version of the popular Qashqai SUV, will not have a vertical tablet multimedia system. At the Tokyo Motor Show in 2017, Nissan introduced the conceptual electric SUV – IMx. In October 2019, the evolution of this show car was shown on the same platform: the new prototype was named Ariya. In 2021, the “green” crossover will be sent to mass production. Recall that the concept presented last fall in the cabin has a horizontal “wave-like” display of the infotainment system. A modern trend in the organization of the car’s interior space has been the placement of a large vertically oriented screen that resembles a tablet in the middle of the front panel. But Nissan in the process of creating a display for the Ariya concept went a different way. The manufacturer decided to balance design, manufacturability and practicality instead of falling into the trend. Therefore, the Ariya electric car was equipped with a curved display with two screens: in shape it resembles a wave. This influenced the “horizontal orientation” of the entire interior – from elements in the doors to the rear of the cabin. This arrangement reflects the brand’s new stylistic language, expressed in the formula “Timeless Japanese Futurism”. By the way, the same principle is used to design the exterior of the Ariya concept: it is embodied in a unique stub, which is located on the site of a traditional radiator grill. The company emphasized that it was decided to dwell on a horizontally oriented design not only for aesthetic reasons. New BMW 4 Series: Hofmeister retirement and nostrils of contention BMW introduced the fourth-generation coupe of the new generation (G22). The design did not come as a surprise, but the debate about it after the official presentation flared up even hotter. Does technology really interest anyone else? BMW announced the giant nostrils that adorn the front of the “four” generation G22 back in September last year on the conceptual harbinger of new items, but many fans of the brand could not believe that they would be kept on the production version of the model – too unusual and provocative. Particularly strange are such nostrils that look in combination with a front number plate that cuts them horizontally. Then it would be time to follow the example of Alfa Romeo cars, for which the number plate is installed to the right of the company signboard – also not the most elegant solution, but even with it the designers ’idea is understandable, and in the case of the“ four ”BMW the plate is out of place. However, on the American version of the model it will not be, so the Yankees will be able to fully enjoy the aesthetics of the new coupe, if, of course, they like it. The Chinese will surely be delighted, even with a sign, even without – for them, the more branded attributes, the better. In this regard, of course, the rejection of Hofmeister’s signature bend in the design of the rear side windows looks rather unexpected, and now the BMW “four” on the side resembles the Infiniti Q60, but the related “3” G20 was caught flirting with Japanese motifs and shamelessly copies some Lexus IS exterior design elements. The feed of the new “4” also sends greetings to the Infiniti Q60: the contours of the lanterns of the German and Japanese coupes are very similar. The rear bumper seems overly embossed. It’s not interesting to discuss the interior: from the driver’s point of view, it’s exactly the same as the G30 “3”, with unreadable side scales on a virtual 12.3-inch instrument panel, obliterated by central air ducts climate control screen, a typical multimedia 10.25-inch tablet with the operating system BMW 7.0 and other common places. The rear seats with integrated head restraints seem to hint that it is better for adult passengers not to sit there, and the Euro NCAP score for the geometry of such head restraints is unlikely to be satisfactory. However, even the larger and status coupe of the 8 Series has, in fact, a 2 + 2 landing formula, so it was hardly worth expecting from the “4” more comfort for second-row passengers.
